We have a great opportunity for students to participate in a departmental outreach event with visiting students from the Ingenuity Project at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. This is a meaningful way to engage with the community, and participation can be documented as service on your CV or resume. We encourage our Mu Sigma Rho members and STAT students to join if available.

As part of our Departmental outreach programs, we will be hosting 25+ Ingenuity Project (Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) students on campus today. If you are available in the 9am-1pm region, we have opportunities for you to be involved. This is service, and can be documented on your CV or Resume. 

9-10am is the walking tour

10-12 is classroom visits and people hanging out in MP412 (the computer classroom)

12-1pm is lunch at True Grits

You are invited to any or all of the above. For the tour, be in the Lounge by about 8:55. Drop by 412 any time in the 10-12 window. Be in the Department lounge at 11:55 for lunch.

Please consider volunteering your time to support the 2026 Mathematics Olympiad. This event will be hosted on April 18th at UMBC by the Maryland Science Olympiad. Additional event information will be linked below!

• This opportunity is open to undergraduate students, graduate students, post-doctoral candidates, and faculty members!
• We still need volunteers especially for events such as Bungee Drop, Eng CAD, MAchines and Materials Science.
• We also need help behind the scenes, especially UMBC students to serve as concierges at registration tables and events since folks from the Maryland Science Olympiad not familiar with campus will need to be pointed in the right direction.

The Norman Beery Memorial Scholarship for First Generation College Students was established by Susan Mayo to honor her father, Norman Beery, who was a veteran and railroad worker, and to help first-generation college students like her. A first-generation college student is someone whose parent(s) and grandparents did not complete a four-year college or university degree.
The $3,000 scholarship will be given annually to a student enrolled in or planning to enroll in a statistics, biostatistics, or science (e.g., natural, social, computer) program incorporating statistics. It can be used to pay for any costs related to the recipient's education such as books, tuition, and housing.

The 2026 Mu Sigma Rho Statistics Haiku Contest is officially open!
North Carolina State's Chapter of Mu Sigma Rho is inviting everyone (students, faculty, and stats lovers of all backgrounds) to write statistics or probability inspired haiku!

Contest Instructions:

• Accepted Haiku Formats: 5-7-5 or 3-5-3 syllables

• Max 3 submissions per person

• No AI-generated haiku (your brain > machine learning)

• Deadline: March 14, 2026 (Pi Day!)

• Winners announced: April 17, 2026 (National Haiku Day)

Are you strong in Math or Statistics and interested in Biological applications? Or focused on Biology research but have some background in Math or Statistics and an interest in mathematical modeling?
