Sondheim Public Affairs Scholars Program Affiliates


In honoring UMBC’s commitment to inclusive excellence, the Sondheim Public Affairs Scholars Program has created an Affiliates Program to support more undergraduate students in pursuing their public service goals. The Affiliates Program creates an opportunity for UMBC students who did not apply for or were not selected for the Sondheim Program as prospective freshmen, but whose qualities and goals align with the Sondheim Program. 


Eligibility

  • For the 2025-2026 academic year, applicants may be:

    • Freshmen

    • Sophomores

    • Juniors

    • Transfer students with at least two years remaining at UMBC


  • Seniors, graduate students, and current Sondheim Scholars are not eligible to apply


  • Applicants must have a 3.0+ GPA. 


Application and Selection Process


Deadline: July 15 at 11:59 p.m. ET


The application process will include completing an online application form, and submitting a resume and unofficial transcript by email to sondheimscholars@umbc.edu.


We plan to have a cohort of up to 10 Sondheim Affiliates for the upcoming academic year. Affiliates will have access to many of our Sondheim events, resources, and activities. After 1 year of active participation in the program, Affiliates will be eligible to apply for an Experiential Learning Award (up to $5,500) and an Academic Enrichment & Professional Development (up to $550) Award. 

The Affiliates Program is open to students who will be incoming freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and transfer students (with at least 2 years of time remaining at UMBC).

Information is now available on the website for Maryland General Assembly’s 2026 Legislative Intern Program for college students (MGA Legislative Intern Program). These are paid internships with legislative offices during session (dates of internship are January 13 – April 17). The application process opens September 9th and closes October 15, 2025. I (Dr. A) highly recommend this program to MSL students!

The Political Science department offers academic credit during the spring semesters for students participating in approved internships. Dr. Mileah Kromer (mkromer@umbc.edu) currently coordinates the internship program and teaches the associated class, and is the professor you should contact with a request for sponsorship if you want to gain academic credit through that class, POLI 448. The class is open to students of any major.

Over April  29 and 30, we went to Annapolis and met with delegations from around the state to participate in the 33rd Annual Session of Maryland Student Legislature. Attendance included over 60 students from UMBC, Mount St. Mary's University, Hood College, McDaniel College, University of Maryland, Howard Community College, St. Mary's College of Maryland, University of Maryland Global Campus, Coppin State University, Frostburg State University, College of Southern Maryland, and Morgan State University.

This year, for the first time since the February 2020 Winter Session, we had committees at our session. This session featured three committees: Appropriations and Ways and Means Committee, Environment and Transportation and Economic Matters Committee, and Judiciary and Health and Government Operations Committee. Evan Royston served as the Vice Chair for the Environment and Transportation and Economic Matters Committee.

Out of 46 bills on the docket, 37 were given a favorable report in committee, 24 were considered on the floor, and 20 passed the assembly. All of the bills that were passed will be forwarded to the Maryland General Assembly for their consideration.

Many of our members were recognized for their skills this session. Seven bills submitted by our delegation were passed. Congratulations to Nehal Naqvi, Zoe Smith, Aurora Quezada, Evan Royston, Noelani Herrera, and Diana Torres. During this session, Zoe Smith was appointed to serve as parliamentarian as the current Attorney General was unable to attend Annual Session.

Incoming Treasurer Nehal Naqvi was elected to serve as the Attorney General on the 2023-24 Council of State. Additionally, current Treasurer and incoming Delegation Chairperson Dominick Satterwhite was elected to serve as the Lt. Governor.

We are greatly looking forward to continuing with MSL next year. The Fall Leadership Training Institute will be held on October 7, 2023 and will take place at the College of Southern Maryland. The Fall Session will be held on November 11 and 12 and will take place at Hood College. Stay tuned to find out about more upcoming events next year.

Over November 12 and 13, we went to McDaniel College and met with delegations from around the state to participate in the 2022 Fall Session of Maryland Student Legislature. Attendance included over 30 students from UMBC, Mount St. Mary's University, Hood College, McDaniel College, University of Maryland, Howard Community College, and College of Southern Maryland. Out of 37 bills on the docket, 18 were considered and 14 passed the assembly. All of the bills that were passed will be forwarded to the Maryland General Assembly for their consideration. All of the bills that were not considered during this session will be put on the docket for Annual Session in the spring.

Many of our members had great success this session. Four bills from our delegation were passed. Congrats to Poushali Banerjee, Aurora Quezada, Zoe Smith, Diana Torres, and Aashna Gupta. Another member of our delegation, Dominick Satterwhite, was elected as leader of the Tory Caucus. Dominick Satterwhite and other members of our delegation also worked with the MSL Board to launch a Discord server for students from across the state to connect.

We are greatly looking forward to all of the events that MSL has scheduled for the spring semester. The Spring Leadership Training Institute will be held on February 18, 2023 at University of Maryland. Annual Session will take place in Annapolis on April 29 and 30, 2023.
