MLL 300: Colombian Caribbean Culture in an Intercultural Perspective (3 credits)
Course Overview
SPAN 201/202/301/302: Students will earn 4 credits in Spanish 201, 202, 301, or 302 depending upon their placement in the program. Students must have completed SPAN 102 or 103 (or equivalent credits) prior to the program’s start.

The Country
Located along the Magdalena River and known as the “Golden Gate to Colombia,” Barranquilla is a vibrant port city in Northern Colombia. The region is full of sandy beaches, historical sites such as Cartagena and Santa Marta. This city is the epicenter of cultural, musical, and artistic development in Colombia. As the country’s first port, Barranquilla’s population of approximately 2 million has welcomed people from around the world including Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, providing the city with a unique international flair.

Program Cost: $3,500 paid to UMBC Study Abroad Office
Cost includes: • One Spanish course at UniNorte (4 credits, tuition and fees) • One UMBC course (MLL300) taught by Ms. Hernandez (3 credits tuition and fees) • Housing with local families in Barranquilla, including meals daily, laundry, cable, and internet • Daily transportation from/to housing to the university • Meal plan at UniNorte-cafeterias • Airport pick-up and drop-off in Barranquilla • Excursions (including ground transportation, hotel, fees to museums and lunch) to Cartagena, Santa Marta, Aracataca, Usiacuri • Cultural activities (including dancing classes, fees to museums, and events) in Barranquilla • Pre-paid phone for local calls • International health insurance
Cost does not include: • International airfare • Passport • Personal spending money (individual activities, toiletries, snacks, souvenirs, etc)
