<Title>NSF has awarded a 5-year S-STEM grant to UMBC</Title>

    <div class="html-content">We are very pleased to announce that UMBC's ME S-STEM Scholarship Program has received a 5-year grant to continue the scholarship program, with a total amount of $991,618. Receiving this grant the third time (previously in 2010 and 2014) is an indication of the high quality of our program on improving the retention and graduation rates of our scholars.  Many thanks to all the faculty and staff members in the past for their hard work for achieving the positive outcomes of our program. <Title>Using Quantum Dots in Biological and Clinical Applications</Title>

    <div class="html-content">Dr. Andrew Smith at UIUC visited UMBC last Friday to give the ME S-STEM scholars a research seminar.  Dr. Smith's talk was focused on using quantum dots (a type of nanoparticles) for imaging biological processes and for diagnosing disease.  Several videos were shared during the talk to understand motions of intracellular and plasma membrane proteins in living cells, via light-emitting quantum dots attached to those specific proteins.  Students also learned how the real-time images recorded were analyzed using engineering mathematical tools to identify disease associated molecules, especially for screening cancer cells leading to metastasis, as well as testing newly developed therapeutic drugs for treating cancer, Alzheimer, or obesity.  Dr. Smith answers many questions asked by the students.  Dr. Smith also shared information on many research opportunity at UIUC and encouraged our scholars to apply.</div>

<Title>Our Scholar Participates in the Lakeland Math Coach Program</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span>ME S-STEM scholar Jasmine Bonilla is currently working with the Lakeland Math Coach Program that aims at helping students from Lakeland Elementary/Middle School to excel in their math skills in preparation for their future. Jasmine visits the school twice a week to attend what the school calls "intervention blocks" where students are split into groups to work on strengthening specific math skills. The Lakeland Math Coach Program inspires students to work hard to see the idea of going to college in their future and pushes them to do exceptionally well in their math classes. An important role Jasmine plays is working with multiple Hispanic students to translate and get the math concepts across in an understandable manner for these kids. <Title>Lucas McCullum -- ME S-STEM Scholar's Research</Title>

    <div class="html-content">ME S-STEM scholar, Mr. Lucas McCullum has been working on a research project related to using a PZT transducer for tumor screening in the past year.  He works in Dr. Soobum Lee's research lab in the Mechanical Engineering Department to learn how PZT transducers when attached to an object are capable of evaluating mechanical properties of the object.  PZT can convert electrical pulses to mechanical vibrations, which are affected by the mechanical properties such as stiffness of the object it attaches to.  Lucas' research is to evaluate whether a stiff tumor, when buried underneath a tissue, can be detected via analyzing the electrical and vibration signals produced by a PZT transducer attached to the tissue surface.  Lucas performed experiments in tissue-equivalent phantom gels with or without a hard object embedded to assess feasibility of this approach.  Lucas' research is currently supported by the Undergraduate Research Award he received from the Office of Undergraduate Research at UMBC.</div>

<Title>Jordan Bendler -- Development of a microfluidic device</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>Mr. Jordan Bendler worked this past summer in Dr. Ronghui Ma’s
    laboratory at UMBC.  He and a graduate student, Mr. Myo Min Zaw, designed and prototyped polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microfluidic
    devices for studying the dispersal of nanoparticles through a porous
    membrane.  The devices will allow for
    future research in the biomedical fields, particularly in targeted cancer drug delivery.  Mr. Bendler said that the
    experience gained was invaluable, and the acquired skills are not traditionally
    taught in regular ME courses.</p>
    
    <p>Starting from rudimentary information, they researched and tested
    different methods of mixing, curing, and bonding the PDMS material, ending with
    a suitable process for prototyping our devices. 
    Using Solidworks, a new casting mold for the devices was generated.  It was then sent to a local engineering
    company for subtractive manufacturing.  After
    completing a device, they used a syringe pump to continuously pump red dye water through the microchannels.   From analyzing
    the performance of the device, they could identify technical issues and improve upon future manufacturing process. </p></div>

<Title>Mechanical Engineering Lab Tour - Bioheat Transfer Lab</Title>

    <div class="html-content">We were glad to see more than 30 students coming to the lab tour to get to know ongoing research projects in the Mechanical Engineering Department. 90% of the ME faculty members have active research projects and have provided research experience to the undergraduate students in the departments. The lab tour was planned to connect undergraduate students to faculty mentors and engage them in research opportunity.</div>

<Title>ME S-STEM Scholar's Research -- Keith Purvis</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>ME S-STEM scholar, Keith Purvis has been working in the
    Micro Materials Characterization Lab directed by Dr. Marc Zupan in the Mechanical Engineering Department. The lab is focused on characterizing and
    developing emerging materials. Specifically, the lab has unique capabilities in
    microsample testing, in which small samples of about 3 mm long and have a
    testing section that is by 0.25 mm by 0.25 mm square are used. Mr. Purvis conducts material properties testing (usually tensile testing) on these samples, which
    enables them to characterize the properties of difficult to manufacture materials
    or the local properties of a material that has undergone a processing change
    (such as the differences in local properties that result after welding). He also compares the differences between a macro-scale (standard) tensile
    test and a micro-scale one to identify differences, or lack thereof,
    across different length scales. Non-destructive microCT scans have been used to visualize micro-voids and micro-cracks within the samples that may contribute to changes in mechanical properties of the samples.</span></p>

<Title>ME S-STEM Scholar's Research -- Angela Bartolomeo</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span>Ms. Angela Bartolomeo, an ME S-STEM scholar, has had several internships in the past years. In her previous internship with Sigma Space she assembled and aligned optical equipment for lidar units. She is currently employed in an internship with the Naval Research Lab (NRL) in the Space Science Division. Her job includes writing a UI for communications with a spectrometer, using CAD software to design test/assembly equipment, and overseeing environmental tests for the spectrometer. Eventually, the spectrometer will be sent into space on a satellite to measure ions. She has been able to work on a variety of projects thus far, in not only mechanical engineering but also optical and computer engineering. She hopes to continue her employment there after her graduation from UMBC.</span></div>
