ME Research Lab Visit on Oct. 19, 2018 The ME S-STEM Scholarship Program hosted a lab visit this past Friday, Oct. 19, 2018, to all the undergraduate in the ME department.  The enthusiasm from ME students was evident.  Before the lab visit starting at 12 noon, there was a long line of undergraduate students outside of Dr. Deepa Madan's laboratory, waiting to sign up for the lab tour.  Almost 60 ME undergraduate students attended the lab tour.

Dr. Madan, an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and co-Director of the ME S-STEM Scholarship Program, has prepared the in-depth lab tour aiming at maximizing information students can get as well as balancing depth with broadness of the topics.  Dr. Madan and her graduate students first showed individual research projects, then Dr. Madan gave a powerpoint presentation on how thermal-electric devices work in generating energy (electricity) taking advantage of hot and cold sources. Most importantly, she described medical applications in which those devices can be used.  The lab tour concluded with individual discussions between students and Dr. Madan in small groups, allowing students to ask questions not only to individual projects, but also on how to pursue research as an undergraduate students in the department.  

Based on the students' feedback, more than 95% of the students are satisfied with the lab tours, and they are more interested in having research experience than that before the tour.  Almost all of them want to participate lab tours in the future if it is available.  Students also provided suggestions to improve the lab tours, including having a larger room, decreasing noise level, and limiting the total number of attendees.

students at HCC As an ongoing effort to improve transfer process of community college students to UMBC, Dr. Ronghui Ma, a co-Director of the ME S-STEM Scholarship Program and the Director of Undergraduate Program in the ME department, gave a seminar to new students in engineering at the Howard Community College this month.  Dr. Ma's talk consists of three parts: ME program at UMBC in general, ME S-STEM Program, and ongoing research project in her research lab at UMBC.  The room was packed, showing the enthusiasm from the students at HCC to have an opportunity to interact with a faculty from the ME department at UMBC.  Students asked many questions related to the transfer process to UMBC's 4 year ME program and they were excited to hear scholarship opportunity they can apply Mr. Mamadou Diallo, an ME S-STEM scholar, spent the past summer working as an engineering design and applications intern in Regal’s Power Transmission Division. As an intern in the coupling selections team, he was tasked with reviewing customer requests and selecting couplings that best met these applications. This required ensuring that selections are neither overemphasized or undersized, and that they meet regulations. His duty also included making engineering modifications of standard couplings as needed in order to meet specifications.

The experience has provided Mr. Diallo with opportunities to witness the value that power transmission provides in industries and to get familiar with regulations. Mr. Diallo feels that this was a very memorable, educational, and worthwhile internship to say the least. The great connections and friendships that were built with other interns and professional engineers throughout have made and will continue to make a positive lasting impact on his future career.

High School Dr. Deepa Madan, Co-Director of the ME S-STEM Scholarship Program, was invited to give a seminar to students in the Woodlawn High School (WHS) on March 19th, 2018.  This is a part of our recruitment effort to introduce the ME-STEM scholarship program to local high school students scholarship opportunity such as the ME S-STEM Scholarship available to high school seniors who are admitted to UMBC.  Dr. Madan described various the scholarship opportunities at UMBC including special features of the ME S-STEM Scholarship Program, as well as ongoing research projects in her laboratory at UMBC.  Many WHS students attended the seminar and they asked many questions related to the our ME undergraduate program and Dr. Madan's research.  Dr. Madan also offered WHS’s student to between CC and UMBC ME program In the past weeks, Dr. Liang Zhu from the ME S-STEM Scholarship Program visited two CCBC campuses (one in Catonsville, and the other in Essex) and one Montgomery Community College.  The goal of the visit is to enhance collaboration between CCBC/MC and UMBC Mechanical Engineering program.  Dr. Zhu gave a talk to students and faculty in those Community Colleges.  Her talk consists of three parts: ME program at UMBC in general, Mechanical Engineering S-STEM Scholarship Program at UMBC, and ongoing research projects in her lab.  Students asked many questions on the transfer process from Community Colleges to UMBC ME program, and on how to apply for the ME S-STEM scholarship.  We hope that this kind of visits between UMBC and Community College will provide important information to Community College students, offer scholarship opportunity they can apply, and improve their transfer experience to the 4 year ME program at UMBC. ]]> In the past give a seminar to students in the Howard Community College on March 15th, 2018.  This is part of our recruitment effort to introduce the ME program to community college students and describe scholarship opportunity such as the ME S-STEM Scholarship to them.  Dr. Ma described the scholarship opportunity at UMBC, special features of the ME S-STEM Scholarship Program, as well as ongoing
