Extracting Blood Flow Information - Hector Flores' Research

ME S-STEM Scholar Hector Flores worked in the summer in the Bioheat Transfer Laboratory at UMBC to gain research experience. His research project was to determine baseline blood perfusion rate in tumors from measured infrared temperature distribution. This was the first time Mr. Flores worked in a research lab at UMBC. He has learned how an infrared camera interprets irradiation received into temperature mapping of a surface. Mr. Flores studied how a commercial software COMSOL works to simulate temperature fields in an image-scan generated mouse body and an embedded tumor. The extracted local blood perfusion rate is useful to improve accuracy of theoretical simulations in tissue to design safe and effective heating protocols for damaging tumors.

Internship at Raytheon -- ME S-STEM Scholar Allison Dietz

This past summer, ME S-STEM scholar Ms. Allison Deitz had the amazing opportunity to intern at an international aerospace and defense company Raytheon. Her main responsibility was to alter and update engineering drawings and create the required documentation for those changes. This required her to learn a 3D modeling program called Creo from the ground up. One of her favorite assignments was creating a drawing from scratch and releasing it into our product data management system to be used for an entirely new program. Over the course of this internship, she learned a multitude of things. She was able to be apart of a corporate workplace where she used her communication and interpersonal skills every time she interacted with her coworkers. She will continue to intern at Raytheon over the school year in a part-time capacity so that she can assist the mechanical engineers and learn more about the industry and engineering as a whole.

ME S-STEM scholars Micah Nissy and Juan Fernandez are members of the UMBC Fly team. They recently went to Tuscon, Arizona to compete in the 23rd Annual AIAA Design, Build, Fly Competition. More than 140 teams from universities in the US and oversea submitted their designs. The team from UMBC is one of the teams that made through the last stage of the competition. Their final ranking of 50th is a significant improvement from their last year's performance in the competition. They built a better airplane, scored higher in their technical report, and learned more about airplane design. They also beat fly teams from universities which have better resources, including Cornell, Johns Hopkins, Purdue, and Stanford. Congratulations!

Workshop on Graduate School Application and Procedures

ME S-STEM Scholarship Program hosted a workshop on graduate school application. Dr. Chuck Eggleton gave a presentation and led the discussion. This workshop aims at ME undergraduate students in their early stages at UMBC to consider graduate school in their career. Dr. Eggleton assure students that most of the graduate school expenses are covered by the employer, lab researcher grants, department teaching assistant opportunity, or graduate student fellowship from federal government. Dr. Eggleton and Dr. Topoleski answered many questions students asked. One of the UMBC alumni, Mr. Yared Amanuel, shared his experience of working at Naval Sea Systems Command -- Carderock Division, while pursuing his PhD at umbc. We thank Ms. Diane Ghorayeb, for coordinating the event and the ME department for providing the lunch. Although the event ended before 1 pm, several scholars and ME faculty stayed to continue to discuss topics related to their academic experience and career in the future.

Research Seminar by Dr. Sassin in the US Naval Research Lab

On the first day of March 2019, Dr. Megan Sassin gave a research seminar on enhancing energy storage on the macroscale via architectural design on the nanoscale. Dr. Sassin is a scientist working in the Advanced Electrochemical Materials section of the US Naval Research Lab in Washington DC. In her talk, Dr. Sassin described development process of a new electrode material consisting of nanoscale metal oxides and conducting polymers, and its resulting larger faradaic charge-storage capacities than conventional composite electrodes. It was an interesting research topic to mechanical engineering undergraduate students. Dr. Sassin provided a snapshot of how research is conduced in a federal government research facility.

Dr Q. Wu gave a research seminar on lubrication theory

On Feb. 8, Dr. Qianhong Wu at Villanova University, came to UMBC and gave the ME faculty and students a research seminar. Dr. Wu focused the first part of presentation on his research of using lubrication theory and transport in porous media to explain how friction can be dramatically reduced in various applications from microscale level when red blood cells travelling in narrow capillaries to macroscale level of snowboarding. The second portion of his presentation was on how the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) transport in porous media acts as a damping component to resist external physical impacts in humans. We all enjoyed the presentation very much.

Program outcome dissemination via conference presentation

Dr. Liang Zhu attended the AACU's 2018 Transforming STEM Higher Education conference held in Atlanta GA in November 2018. This conference aims at charting a path toward the reform of STEM higher education by strategically integrating disciplinary introspection, social consciousness, and self-reflection into the conference experience. Dr. Zhu presented a paper entitled "Improvement of students' retention and graduation via integration of research into education", which shows the positive outcomes of one of the important S-STEM program features at UMBC. The conference also provide a platform for interaction among participants via workshops, small group discussions, and keynote speeches. It was a wonderful experience to get to know other researchers in engineering education and publicize research outcomes of our S-STEM scholarship program.
