Congratulation to the management team of the ME S-STEM Scholarship Program. A research article entitled "Evaluation of STEM engagement activities on the attitudes and perceptions of mechanical engineering s-stem scholars" co-authored by Drs. Zhu, Sun, Eggleton, Topoleski, Ma, and Madan has been peer-reviewed and published by ASME Journal of Biomechanical Engineering. Our scholarship program has presented and reported our program outcomes in many research conferences including ASEE, SB3C, BMES, etc. In 2020, we published our 1st journal paper, and this year we continued our practice to get the 2nd journal paper accepted and published. A great accomplishment by everyone!
PDF files of the two journal papers can be found in the Program Director's lab website at

https://bioheat.umbc.edu/publications

Have a good experience of working in industry -- Troy Baker

Over the past summer, one of the ME S-STEM scholars, Mr. Troy Baker, worked with Early Charm Ventures, a venture company out of Baltimore. They recently formed a new venture with the Main Line Health hospital system and Lankenau Institute for Medical Research called Lankenau Ventures. Mr. Baker worked as a Development Engineer for Lankenau Ventures and worked alongside medical professionals to develop two small medical devices. They were presented with problems by medical professionals, to develop products to fix those problems, and then conduct a series of interviews with additional medical professionals to see if they experienced the same problems as well as to collect design feedback. Although Mr. Baker had to return to school for the start of the semester before any of those devices could be evaluated, he had a valuable experience preparing him to work in a company after he graduates from our program.

ME S-STEM scholar, Mr. Lani McGuire, worked at North Carolina State University with the FREEDM Systems Center in the Laboratory for Packaging Research in Electronic Energy Systems (PRESS) this summer. He developed a system to automate the dispensing of certain materials on substrates in the lab from CAD files. This experience taught him how to conduct in a research environment by starting from background research and literature reviews. Mr. McGuire said that his mentor was great. His mentor explained things to expect in graduate school. It was an overall great REU experience for Mr. McGuire.

After a long 18 months staying at home working, faculty and students at UMBC returned to campus for the Fall 2021 semester. The ME S-STEM scholarship program held an annual retreat on September 3rd, 2021, in the virtual setting during the transition. All ME S-STEM scholars and their mentors attended this event. Dr. Zhu first welcomed all scholars and gave a presentation on the ME S-STEM Scholarship Program history, activities, and expectations. All faculty mentors in the program described their research and teaching at UMBC. Finally Dr. Eggleton gave a workshop on importance of pursuing graduate degree, typical graduate school application process, and general milestones of graduate student life.
We welcome everyone back on campus. We are looking forward to seeing you in person in class rooms and offices. Let's wish the best that everything will be back to normal soon.

Ms. Bella Gudino's Research Project

ME S-STEM Scholar, Bella Gudino, has been working in Dr. Jeff Leips' laboratory in the Biological Sciences department at UMBC since 2017. Ms Gudino's research project uses drosophila melanogaster as a model organism, to investigate how differences in DNA and gene expression factors affect age related declines. One of the age-related topics in question is the decline in immune function throughout aging, specifically, the diminished ability to clear bacterial infections. Through microinjections of bacterial solutions into older flies and applying plating techniques, one can count colonies that grow from each fly after they have had 24 hours to clear the infection. Using these colony counts and comparing the numbers to the genome for each fly, Ms. Gudino and Dr. Leips hope to identify target genes that can be further researched in order to find the connection between the candidate genes and the ability to fight infection through old ages.

Talen Energy Internship -- Mr. Michael Parkent

ME S-STEM scholar, Mr. Michael Parkent spent the summer of 2020 with Talen Energy at the H. A. Wagner generating station in Baltimore. Mr. Parkent was assigned to create an inspection/maintenance plan for aging infrastructure, namely the Fuel Oil Transfer System. He constructed a model of the pipelines for the whole plant in AutoCAD, identified damage mechanisms and areas of failure, proposed solutions to these areas, and designed a plan to accurately determine the remaining life of the rest of the pipeline. Mr. Parkent feels that it was a fun summer and he is looking forward to having power generation as an interesting career path. Job well done! Congratulation to your graduation from our BS program this coming fall!

Internship at SLAC-NAL -- Mr. A-R Adeleke

In the summer of 2020, one of our ME S-STEM scholars, Mr. Abdul-Raheem Adeleke had an unusual internship (online) with the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory formally known as the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. It is one of the U.S Department of Energy’s 17 national laboratories, its research focuses on advanced scientific studies using extremely high-powered X-rays. During this internship Mr. Adeleke worked remotely to create a computer script that automated the lens alignment of a robotic microspectrophotometer system used to study organic protein crystals. He studied the systems manual lens alignment process, then created a script using the Tcl programming language to automatically move the motorized lenses to their optimally aligned positions. Additionally, the script helped identify and automatically solve critical alignment errors within the system which overall saved time and labor for the staff that operated it. Congratulation!
