In Depth Lab Visit at UMBC

The ME S-STEM Scholarship Program sponsored a lab visit on Nov. 2, 2022. Dr. Deepa Madan, a co-director of the ME S-STEM Scholarship Program, offered an in-depth tour to her lab in the brand new ILSB building on campus. This event is responding to students' request to having a longer visiting time so that students would have opportunity to interact with faculty and graduate students to understand details of ongoing research projects in the ME department at UMBC. The lab visit was well received by our S-STEM scholars, and many students even stayed after 1 pm to continue their discussion with Dr. Madan and her graduate students.

T. Rozario -Understand Optimization Techniques in ME Labs

Over the past school year and summer at UMBC, ME S-STEM Scholar Turibius Rozario (he/him) conducted research on gradient descent and gradient-free optimization techniques for neural networks under the mentorship of Dr. Ankit Goel. He implemented standard gradient descent using both pre-existing packages such as TensorFlow as well as his own scripts through MATLAB. Additionally, for simple problems, he demonstrated that solving a system of non-linear equations is a technique capable of exceeding gradient descent in optimization rate and quality. He identified random search method, though primitive, to be able to successfully optimize multi-layered problems with no slope computations.

A Successful Internship at Northrop Grumman

This summer Mr. Peter Serp, an ME S-STEM scholar, interned at Northrop Grumman in Annapolis, MD. While there he did research using 3D printers by testing different material capabilities and how they react in different environments (temp/pressure) or when exposed to different chemicals. He also participated in events and seminars lead by different subject experts at the company dealing with materials, additive manufacturing, and underwater systems. Mr. Serp has already been asked to return for summer 2023, congratulation!

Summer Internship in RMF Engineering

ME S-STEM scholar Joe Schlee worked with the Baltimore buildings group in RMF engineering as a mechanical engineer, with a specific focus on lab development. RMF Engineering is a full-service firm that offers a large variety of engineering solutions to clients interested in renovations or large-scale infrastructure and building projects. Through his internship, he learned many new skills such as duct routing, pipe routing (mechanical and plumbing), 2D and 3D drafting, document preparation, and the design process that goes into building development. Some of his job duties included preparing and updating cad models of projects with HVAC and plumbing solutions. he was also involved in the planning and load analysis of a few smaller projects. Later in the internship, he visited on-site for some of our projects to analyze their current HVAC system, and create drawings to help plan future renovations of the project. Overall, Mr. Schlee would say this has been a great experience for him, and he will be continuing this internship throughout the school year.

REU experience at University of Florida

Over the summer of 2022, ME S-STEM scholar, Ms. Chizaram Ugboh participated in a summer REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) at the University of Florida (UF). She had the pleasure of working under Dr. Spearot to investigate dynamic fracture within a hydrogel at the atomistic level. She spent the first few weeks reading various scientific literature on basic hydrogels and PEGDA hydrogels, molecular dynamics, and multiscale modeling and simulation. For weeks three and onwards, she practice atomistic simulation with a peptide molecule and a vacancy defect to improve my programming skills on a Large-scale Atomic/Molecular Massively Parallel Simulator (LAMMPS). Soon after she had sharpened her skills with LAMMPS, she began to produce hydrogels of different water concentrations and record their stress and strain data at different timesteps. Having five different water concentrations of hydrogels made it possible for her to see how the hydrogels became more elastic as they absorbed more water. Lastly, she I implemented the break bonds command in the code to cause a fracture. The breaking of bonds for a hydrogel with 50% water weight was compared to a hydrogel with 90% water weight to see how many bonds broke. In my final days at UF, she created a presentation of my work over the ten weeks and presented it to my cohort, various UF graduate students, and faculty.

We were excited to have an in person meeting this year after being locked down in the past two years due to COVID. On Sept. 9, 2022, the ME S-STEM Scholarship Program at UMBC had its annual retreat to welcome new scholars into our program. The Program Director, Dr. Liang Zhu, gave a short presentation on program activities and expectations. Dr. Ronghui Ma, a former undergraduate program director in the department, shared her experience on typical difficulties faced by undergraduate students. The ME department provided lunches. The scholars and faculty mentors in the program had a productive discussion after the presentations. It is wonderful to see everyone in person.

In Person Visits to Community Colleges Resumed

After more than two years of COVID-related shut down, we are pleased to see in person visits to local community colleges. In Spring 2022, Drs. Ronghui Ma and Deepa Madan visited Howard Community College and Carrol County Community College. Both gave a seminars to the community college students and faculty, provided information of the Mechanical Engineering Program, and scholarship information of the ME S-STEM scholarship Program at UMBC. We hope that our efforts would lead to more community students transferring to the 4-year ME program at UMBC.

It is wonderful to breath a tiny bit of normalcy.

Design DRC Boots for Cooling Horse Legs

ME S-STEM Scholar, Mr. Dai Nguyen, with his group members Chris Haley and Rehman Qureshi, have worked on designing a DRC Boot for cooling horse legs. This was part of their CAPSTONE design project. They proposed to use a phase-change material at 28C as the coolant inside a designed galloping boot wrapped on a horse leg. COMSOL simulation results demonstrated decreases of leg skin temperature from 35C without the boot to 31C with the boot, and the cooling penetrates more than 15 mm to the deep tissue region. They later tested the designed boot on horses and they were glad to see temperature reductions in the horse leg during and after horse galloping. Students in the group learned the design process, and numerical simulation of the temperature contours in the leg using a commercially available software based on the Pennes Bioheat Equation. The research was directed by Drs. M. Zupan, J. Gurganus, and L. Zhu.
