<Title>UPDATE: Spring 2021 Academic Reviews</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>The Merit Scholarship Unit has conducted our annual academic review for all current UMBC merit scholars to ensure they are maintaining their scholarship requirements. Scholar recipients are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (which may vary depending upon their awarded scholarship) as well as maintain full-time enrollment (part-time for transfer scholars) each fall and spring semester.  <strong>All scholars have now received notification(s) of their scholarship status.</strong></div><div><br></div><div><u>Scholarship Discontinuation:</u></div><div><br></div><div>Once a scholar has been discontinued from their merit scholarship, their award will not be reinstated regardless if the student is  able to meet the terms of their scholarship in a future semester.  Students, however, will have approximately 2-3 weeks following official notification to appeal the status of their discontinuation.  If approved, scholars will be placed on Scholarship Probation and remain under review for one (1) academic semester.</div><div><br></div><div><u>Scholarship Probation:</u></div><div><br></div><div>Scholars who were placed on probation for Fall 2021 will remain under review for one (1) academic semester. Students on probation do not need to submit a Discontinuation Appeal. </div><div><br></div><div><u>Incomplete or Incorrect Grades:</u></div><div><br></div><div>If you had incomplete or incorrect grades that have since been updated on your Academic Transcript, please report this concern using our online <a href="https://scholarships.umbc.edu/contact-us/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Scholarship Contact Form</a> so our committee may re-review.  Please do not submit a Discontinuation Appeal Request.</div><div><br></div><div>The application for Spring 2021 discontinuation appeals can be found on our website <a href="https://scholarships.umbc.edu/currentscholars/discontinuationappeals/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">here</a>. <strong>The deadline for all Scholarship Discontinuation Appeals is 4:00 PM on Monday, June 28, 2021</strong> (for Spring 2021 discontinuations only).  There will be no extensions to appeal after the deadline. <Title>Academic Reviews: Fall 2020</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span><strong>Friendly Reminder:</strong></span><span>Final Fall 2020 grades will be updated on Academic Official Transcripts for all UMBC students on Monday, January 11, 2021.</span></p><p> </p><p><span>The Merit Scholarship Unit will conduct their mid year academic review for all current UMBC merit scholars to ensure they are maintaining their scholarship requirements. Scholar recipients are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (which may vary depending upon their awarded scholarship) as well as maintain full-time enrollment (part-time for transfer scholars) each fall and spring semester.</span></p><p> </p><p><span>Recipients failing to meet these requirements will lose their scholarship and be notified via e-mail and myUMBC Alert of their award discontinuation.</span></p><p> </p><p><span><strong>First Semester Freshmen:</strong></span></p><p><span>Freshmen scholars beginning Fall 2020 who fail to meet the 3.25 cumulative GPA and/or full-time enrollment requirement, will automatically be placed on Scholarship Warning.  No Scholarship Discontinuation Appeal is required.     <div class="html-content"><div>Happy First Day of Classes Scholars!</div><div><br></div><div>Although this is an unusual way to begin the semester, UMBC has a lot of great resources in place to support you as you navigate your courses this Fall.     <div class="html-content"><p><span>Due to the impact of COVID-19, the Office of Financial and Scholarships has elected to forego taking action on academic reviews for the Spring 2020 semester for all UMBC Merit Scholars.  Therefore, any general merit scholar student below the minimum requirements of their scholarship agreement, will be automatically placed on scholarship probation but will retain their full award amount for the upcoming Fall 2020 semester.</span></p><br><p><span>In an effort to ensure academic progress for the subsequent semesters, the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships will provide scholars experiencing academic challenges information on campus resources to include support from our </span><a href="https://academicsuccess.umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Academic Success Center</span></a><span>.  Scholars will also be encouraged to develop </span><span>Academic Improvement Plans</span><span>, where necessary. </span></p><br><p><span>Any merit scholar student currently on Spring 2020 probation will be removed from probationary status if they have successfully reached the required grade point average (GPA) and/or enrollment completion this semester. </span></p><br><p><span>The normal academic review process will resume at the conclusion of the Fall 2020 semester.</span></p><br><p><span>If you have any questions, we welcome you to contact a UMBC Scholarships Staff Member at: </span><a href="mailto:scholarships@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>scholarships@umbc.edu</span></a><span> <br></span></p></div>

<Title>Spring 2019 Discontinuation Appeal Process</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>The Scholarships Unit has conducted its annual Academic Review for all merit scholar recipients.  Notifications to any student receiving a discontinuation notice, will be sent via e-mail as well as USPS mail.<br></p><p>Scholars with extenuating circumstances may appeal their scholarship discontinuation by submitting a <span><strong>Scholarship Discontinuation Appeal</strong></span>.</p><p>All scholars appealing their discontinuation must submit an appeal form by the published deadline. Appeals must include documentation to explain any extenuating circumstances that lead to the unsatisfactory academic results. The scholar must also have a detailed plan and timetable on how they will restore themselves academically with the <strong>Academic Plan Worksheet</strong>. The <em>Scholarship Review Committee</em> reserves the right to make individual decisions based on extenuating circumstance(s).</p><p><em>Please note:</em> If the appeal is denied or no appeal is submitted by the published deadline, the scholarship will be permanently discontinued and cannot be reinstated.</p><p>The following information is required in order to complete the appeal request. Feel free to review the documents prior to accessing the on-line form.</p><ol><li><strong>Scholarships Appeal Statement</strong> – a personal statement explaining the reason(s) you failed to meet scholarship standards for the semester(s) as reflected on your transcript.</li><li><strong>Scholarships Academic Plan Worksheet</strong></li><li><strong>Supporting Documentation</strong> – Documentation supporting the extenuating circumstance(s) listed in your appeal statement (i.e. hospital visits/bill, death certificate, etc).     <div class="html-content"><strong>Friendly Reminder: </strong>Final Spring 2019 grades will be updated on Academic Official Transcripts for all UMBC students on June 7, 2019.<br><br>In early June, the Merit Scholarship Unit will conduct their annual academic review for all current UMBC merit scholars to ensure they are maintaining their scholarship requirements. Scholar recipients are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (which may vary depending upon their awarded scholarship) as well as maintain full-time enrollment (part-time for transfer scholars) each fall and spring semester.<br><br>Recipients failing to meet these requirements will lose their scholarship and be notified via e-mail, myUMBC Alert &amp;  by USPS mail of their award discontinuation. <br><br>Once a scholar has been discontinued from their merit scholarship, their award will not be reinstated regardless if the student is  able to meet the terms of their scholarship in a future semester.  Students, however, will have approximately 2-3 weeks following official notification to appeal the status of their discontinuation.  If approved, scholars will be placed on Scholarship Probation and remain under review for one (1) academic semester.<br><br><strong>The application for Spring 2019 Discontinuations goes live June 6, 2019<br><br></strong><div><strong>The deadline for all Scholarship Discontinuation Appeals is 4:00PM on Thursday, June 28, 2019 (<em>for Spring 2019 discontinuations only</em>).  </strong><strong><u>There will be no extensions to appeal after the deadline</u>. <br></strong></div><div><strong><br></strong></div><div><strong>Previous semester discontinuation appeals will not be accepted.</strong></div><br><em><br><u>Note</u>: You are receiving this notification because you are enrolled in the UMBC Student Group: UMBC Merit Scholars.</em><br></div>

    reminder, all merit scholarship recipients are required to <u>maintain</u><strong> a minimum
    grade point average (GPA) </strong>and <strong>successfully complete at least 12+ credits (6+
    credits for transfer students) each semester</strong>. Since mid-terms are quickly
    approaching, we have provided you the following list of accessible resources on
    campus to ensure you successfully meet the terms of your scholarship
    agreement<span>  </span></span></p>
    
    
    
    <p><span><span>●</span></span><span>Arrange a meeting with an academic
    advisor at the </span><a href="http://www.umbc.edu/advising" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Advising Services
    Department</span></a><span> to discuss
    success strategies.</span></p>
    
    <p><span><span>●</span></span><span>Utilize </span><a href="http://sss.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Student Support and Tutoring Services</span></a><span> for peer and tutoring resources.</span></p>

    for learning assistance services. </span></p>
