The Office of Student Life’s Mosaic Center for Culture and Diversity is currently seeking 5 student interns for the 2011-2012 academic school year!  These new intern positions are a reflection of the next evolution in the Mosaic Center's work with and for UMBC students. These positions are called "Diversity Educator Interns" and will replace the Cultural Peer student staff.

What is the Diversity Educator Intern (DEI) Program?

The Diversity Educator Intern Program is a year-long leadership development program that trains UMBC students about multiculturalism, diversity, social justice and intercultural communication, and prepares them to be diversity educators and facilitators.  Through the DEI Program, interns provide high quality diversity education dialogue and interactive learning opportunities for UMBC students.  DEIs play an essential role in creating an inclusive and accepting campus community.  The DEIs are supervised and coached by a staff member in the Office of Student Life (the Assistant Dir. of Student Life, Cultural and Spiritual Diversity).

What Do The DEIs Do?

DEIs design and facilitate interactive, diversity education workshops for campus groups, facilitate UMBC Talks diversity dialogues and other intercultural and/or cross-cultural discussions, and advise student leaders.  Workshops may be requested by organizations, classes, and offices. Sometimes the goal is just to help the group to understand and learn with one another better. Other times, groups are experiencing intra/intercultural communication problems and want DEIs to help them figure out ways they can overcome those difficulties. The DEI role is not to solve problems, but to help groups solve their own problems and to help develop diversity and multicultural awareness, knowledge and skills through engaging, safe and interactive activities.

The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing is a series of conferences designed to bring the research and career interests of women in computing to the forefront. Presenters are leaders in their respective fields, representing industrial, academic and government communities. Leading researchers present their current work, while special sessions focus on the role of women in today’s technology fields, including computer science, information technology, research and engineering.

Past Grace Hopper Celebrations have resulted in collaborative proposals, networking, mentoring, and increased visibility for the contributions of women in computing.

There were 97 students registered for the first annual WIT: Spring into Leadership Event. The evening included an inspiring keynote address by Ms. Myra Norton, CEO of Community Analytics. Attendees participated in a networking activity where they listed two goals that they are working on this year. All attendees used post-it notes with their contact information  and indicate that they could help another attendee with a particular goal.  Pictures will be posted soon!
