The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) is a 10-week

 paid summer internship with opportunities in the US

 Department of Energy, Office of Fossil Energy, for women

 and minority students who are currently enrolled in Science,

 Technology (IT), Engineering, and Math majors at an

 accredited college or university.

  

 MLEF MISSION

 Provide opportunities for educational advancement and

 career development through an award winning internship

 program for women and minority students in Science,

 Technology (IT), Engineering and Math.

 

ELIGIBILITY

·         Applicants must be a US citizen

·         Undergraduate students completing their sophomore

·         year in Spring 2012 through PhD candidates

·         Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above

  

  APPLICATION

  Application deadline is December 31, 2011. The start

  date for the summer internship program is June 4, 2012.

The Team for Research in Ubiquitous Secure Technology (TRUST) will
sponsor 20 undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds and
cultures, to participate in the Summer Undergraduate Research
Experience located at TRUST partner campuses: UC Berkeley, Cornell
University, Stanford University, Vanderbilt University.  These
students will work with graduate student and faculty mentors
throughout the summer performing research and supporting activities in
the area of information technology and TRUST related topics.

The program will run from June 3 to July 27, 2012 and provide room and
board, a travel allowance and a $4,000 stipend.  Apply by February 17.

Teach a class at Splash! 2012, an annual one-day event in which high school students are brought on to campus to learn from college students.

At the Junior + Senior family meeting, I spoke about Splash! and what we do, I wanted to give all of the CWIT community a chance to be a part of our program!
No experience is necessary to be a teacher, you just have to love something and have a lesson plan!

Last year, I taught a Rugby 101 class with my team, and we had a great time!
This year, Splash! 2012 will be held on March 10th. Teacher registration can be found here & will close on study day (December 14th, 2011).

Bits & Bytes is an annual outreach program sponsored by CWIT and Northrop Grumman which invites ~30 high school junior girls to UMBC for an overnight stay and design competition. The next event will be held over President's Day weekend on February 19 & 20, 2012. Visit www.cwit.umbc.edu/hs/bitsbytes or see attached flyer for more information.

ALL STUDENTS are invited to apply! Serving on a planning committee for an event of this scale is a great professional development opportunity and will help you gain unique skills to add to your resume. Also...it will be fun!

In previous years we have received anywhere from 60-90 applications form high school girls wanting to participate, and we have been able to have major impacts on the lives of young women through the program. Data collected from pre- and post-event evaluations of the 2011 Bits and Bytes program participants show the program’s impact:

Here is a quote from one of the B&B 2011 participants: "The competition...made me more confident about aspects of the Engineering field and my future potential. This program also made me able to visualize myself as an actual college student, still the UMBC students were approachable and ‘real’ with us.”

Most of the bi-weekly committee meetings will be on-campus in January during winter break, but there will be 1-2 planned for the end of the Fall semester and 1-2 planned for the beginning of the Spring semester before the event in February. Specific meeting dates will be scheduled at times convenient for everyone once the committee has been formed.

You should also be available after about 3pm on Sunday, February 19th, as well as between your classes until about 6pm on Monday, February 20th to assist with program implementation.

Remember, if you are a CS, CMPE, ChemE, or MechE major and haven't passed your gateways yet, you need to sign up for an appointment with a COEIT advisor ASAP to get your Spring classes approved so you can register online. Sign up for an appointment on one of the advisor's sheets posted in the advising hallway on the 2nd floor of ITE (near the main lobby/waiting area).

Maryland Cyber Challenge and Conference, Oct. 21 & 22
Thanks to everyone who volunteered at MDC3 last Friday and/or Saturday! The UMBC Cyber Defense Team was in the finals, and from what I heard did a great job! Unfortunately, Towson and UMCP pulled ahead and got first & second place. Each member of the first place team received $5000 scholarships from the NSA, and each member of the second place team received $2000 scholarships from NSA. Woah!

Out of all the teams in the college and high school championships (I am estimating about 15 6-person teams), I only saw two women. That is only 2 out of about 90 students! I know there was some interest within CWIT in forming a team for this year's competition, but the teams were never fully formed. Lets start planning ahead to get some talented women some teams for next year! Joining the UMBC Cyber Defense Team (http://umbccd.umbc.edu/) would be a great start!
