Volunteers Needed!
Do you want to help middle school students learn about the Engineering & IT field?
Here's your chance to make a difference! CWIT Student Council is co-hosting a service event with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Information Systems Council of Majors (ISCOM), and Society of Women Engineers (SWE). About 55 students in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program from Severn River Middle School will be coming to UMBC on Friday, March 9th from 10am-1:30pm. We need volunteers to help out with the Engineering & IT activities and to help escort the children from one location to the next.

Volunteer to Help with CWIT's Bits & Bytes Program
Sunday, Feb 19th or Monday, Feb 20th
Each February, over President’s Day weekend, the Center for Women in Technology (CWIT) presents the Bits & Bytes Program
for high school junior girls. Each year, about 20-30 academically
talented young women are invited to an overnight visit at UMBC and are
hosted by the CWIT Scholars and Affiliates in CWIT’s Living Learning
Community. The program supports CWIT’s mission to encourage and support
women leaders in Information Technology and Engineering fields.
The purpose of this free event is to engage local high school girls
in the college atmosphere and expose them to the possibilities open to
them in engineering or IT majors in college. Along with in-depth
exposure to life as a college student and UMBC as an institution, the
students participate in an engineering or IT design competition
(for prizes) and interact with current UMBC students, including staying overnight in a residence hall
on campus and attending a college class with one of the CWIT students. More information & pictures can be found here: www.cwit.umbc.edu/hs/bits+bytes

Regional Grace Hopper Conference - Present a poster!
April 13-14 in Northern Virigina. Deadline to submit is 2/17
On April 13-14, 2012 a Regional Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in
Computing will take place in Northern Virginia (http://capwic.org/index.php). There will be a poster session taking place as part of the event. All faculty, staff and students (undergraduate & graduate) are invited to submit an abstract for a poster presentation on your research. Attached are the instructions for submission and additional information on the poster session.
Deadline to submit abstracts online is February 17, 2012. If you don't have research to present at the poster session, consider registering for the conference as an attendee.
