For the Ninth year, UMBC hosted the Maryland State FIRST LEGO League Championship on March 1^st, 2014 in the RAC. This year, nearly 350 teams competed in 17 qualifiers around the Maryland area to earn one of the 72 championship slots. Teams performing well in all three judged areas (Project, Robot Design and Core Values) and scored in the top 40% of the Robot rounds at their qualifier, were invited to compete. Maryland FLL is currently run out of the College of Engineering and IT, Mechanical Engineering Department. Several Departments and scholar programs (Meyerhoff, CWIT, Sherman) continue to support the program through volunteering at many of the qualifiers and the state championship.

FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL®) introduces young people, ages 9 to 16* (grades 4-8), to the fun and excitement of science and technology while building self-confidence, knowledge, and valuable career and life skills. FLL challenges kids to think  like scientists and engineers. Alongside adult Mentors, FLL teams research and design their own solutions to a current scientific question or problem using  engineering concepts, presentation techniques, and build autonomous LEGO robots.  In this year’s challenge, NATURE’S FURY’S, students explored the awe-inspiring storms, quakes, waves, and more that we call natural disasters. Teams discovered what can be done  when intense natural events meet the  places people live, work, and play.

Cybersecurity Research Experience for Undergraduates in Science and Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park

We are looking for Cybersecurity Scholars for the 2014 summer research experience for undergraduates (REU) program at the University of Maryland, College Park.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: February 14, 2014

The Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland is seeking applications for Scholars to become integral members of team-based research projects in cybersecurity coordinated by faculty in the Maryland Cybersecurity Center (MC2). Students majoring in engineering, computer science, math, and physical science are strongly encouraged to apply. Teams conduct research from June 2 through August 1, 2014. The program offers multiple tiers of mentorship and training in team skills and project organization, as well as addressing issues of concern to women and minorities in science and engineering. Each Scholar receives a $4,500 stipend, $300 food allowance, and housing. Funding is available for transportation.

TODAY:  November 27^TH from 12-1:15pm in ITE 104, will be a Seminar on “How to Improve your interactions with your Engineering Professors.”

This is an opportunity to create a greater awareness on how to initiate interactions with your engineering professors which can increase your learning.

In addition, there will be 4 graduate student representatives from each of the COEIT departments who will talk about their experiences and how they were successful in their undergraduate experiences. These students will also be serving as Faculty Student Mentors for undergraduates who may be interested and have questions regarding their major.
