New welding method pioneered in the UMBC MicroMaterials Lab

<Tagline>Nimer grabs the cover of Advanced Engineering Materials</Tagline>

UMBC Mechanical Engineering researchers Sal Nimer and Prof. Marc Zupan, in collaboration with Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division scientist Dr. Jennifer Wolk, are studying the effects of friction stir welding on the local mechanical properties of a Ti alloy. The research is characterizing and developing the next generation structural materials for Naval vehicle systems. Their recent work was has been featured on the cover of the journal Advanced Engineering Materials.

Micro-tensile samples were utilized as shown in the figure extracted from a friction stir welded (FSW) plate of Ti-5111 and mechanically tested to failure in order to measure local material properties. The experimentally determined mechanical properties are linked down to the micro-structural regions that develop during the FSW process as described by Marc Zupan and co-workers

The abstract from the manuscript is below:

Location and Orientation Specific Material Property

Evaluation of Friction Stir Welded Ti-5111:

A Microsample Approach**

By Salahudin Nimer, Jennifer Wolk* and Marc Zupan*

This work presents microsample measured mechanical properties of a friction stir welded (FSW) plate of Ti-5111. Property measurements and fractographic deformation observations were made as a function of discrete locations within the weld [stir zone (SZ), boundaries, base metal (BM)]. Properties in the longitudinal direction are compared to transverse measurements made at the same locations. Compared to the BM the longitudinal direction shows strength and ductility increases throughout the weld. The outer SZ showed mechanical properties in the longitudinal direction to be similar to the SZ properties in the transverse direction. These observations and measured properties serve to link the local material properties to the complex flow, heat, and deformation imparted to the material during the FSW process.

Google Summer of Code AND FOSS Outreach Program for Women

<Tagline>Deadline is March 21 for Googe and March 19 for FOSS.</Tagline>

Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) is software that gives the user the
freedom to use, copy, study, change, and improve it. FOSS contributors
believe that this is the best way to develop software because it
benefits society, creates a fun collaborative community around a
project, and allows anyone to make innovative changes that reach many
    people.

Google Summer of Code is a global program that offers students stipends
to write code for FOSS projects. Participants work remotely from home,
while getting guidance from an assigned mentor and collaborating within
their project's community. The application deadline for Google Summer of
Code is March 21 and the program dates are May 19 to August 18. The stipend for the program is $5,500 (USD).

http://code.google.com/soc

In an effort to improve the gender diversity in FOSS, a number of
organizations are offering Outreach Program for Women internships
through a program organized by the GNOME Foundation. These internships
are open to women (cis and trans) and genderqueer. The internships have
the same structure, the same stipend and similar program dates. The
application deadline for the Outreach Program for Women is March 19 and the program dates are May 19 to August 18.
Unlike in Google Summer of Code, participants do not need to be
students and non-coding projects are available. In addition to coding,
projects include such tasks as graphic design, user experience design,
documentation, bug triage and community engagement.

http://gnome.org/opw

To apply for either program, you need to connect with a participating
organization early, select a project you want to work on, create a
project plan, and make a few relevant contributions.

The mentorship opportunities are also available throughout the year for
anyone interested in getting started contributing to FOSS outside of the
formal internship program. In addition to the organizations
participating in the Outreach Program for Women, more organizations that
offer informal mentorship to all newcomers are listed here:

http://code.google.com/p/google-summer-of-code/wiki/Mentors

Please consider applying for Google Summer of Code or FOSS Outreach
Program for Women, encourage someone else to apply, or help spread the
word by forwarding this message to any interested university and
    community groups.

CWIT Spring Into Leadership Planning Committee

<Tagline>Help plan this event, celebrating women in IT & engineering!</Tagline>

The annual CWIT Spring Into Leadership event is just over a
month away and we could use the help of a few Affiliates in the rest of
the planning. We will have a planning committee meeting from 12-12:50pm on Wednesday, March 12 (one week from today) in ITE 456.

We will also have a planning committee on Wednesday, March 26, from 12-12:50pm in ITE 456. If we need one more meeting after that, we will schedule it later.

In
these meetings, we will decide on how the networking piece of the event
should work, whether you think we should have a theme to the event this
year, what kinds of topics you think our keynote speaker should address
in her talk, ideas for an interactive piece we could work with the
speaker to incorporate in her talk, etc.

Even if you can only make one of the two scheduled dates, we
encourage you to attend the one you can make; everyone's input will be
valuable in making these decisions for the event.

Spring Into Leadership will be held on Tuesday, April 8, from 6:30-8 p.m. in the UC Ballroom. You may RSVP at the website attached to this post to attend this event. For the planning committee meetings, no RSVP is necessary.

UMBC EMINENT SCHOLAR PROGRAM: Dr. Karen Butler-Purry

<Tagline>Thursday March 13, 11 AM-12 Noon, ITE 325B</Tagline>

SMART DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS

Speaker: Dr. Karen Butler-Purry, Texas A&M University

Smart Grid refers to the computerizing of the grid via the addition of monitoring, analysis, control, and communication capabilities to improve its reliability, efficiency, and security. Smart meter devices, that include sensors to gather data and two-way digital communication between the smart meters in the field and the utility’s grid operations center, are associated with the grid. The smart grid can take advantage of new technologies, such as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, various forms of renewable and conventional distributed generation, lighting management systems, automation technology that lets the utility adjust and control each individual device or millions of devices from a central location, and many more. This presentation will discuss some of the current research projects being investigated by Butler-Purry’s group on smart distributions systems, in grid or island operation. One project investigates the impact of cyber attacks on the operation of smart distribution systems. The second project developed two new approaches to enhance the protection of smart distribution systems. One approach uses smart meters during distribution planning to improve selectivity of protection, and the other approach uses smart meters during operation to improve the sensitivity of protection.

If you have a question regarding this seminar, please contact Dr. Slaughter, gslaught@umbc.edu.

Sponsored by the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering
