<Title>Ph.D. student Manpreet Singh facilitates oncology treatments</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>Manpreet Singh, ME Ph.D. candidate from Dr. Liang Zhu's <a href="https://bioheat.umbc.edu/news/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Bioheat Transfer Laboratory</a>  is working with Dr. Dario Rodrigues, a Radiation Oncologist at Maryland Proton Treatment Center and Dr. Zeljko Vujaskovic, a Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology, University of Maryland School of Medicine in the summer of 2019. </span></p><p><span>He will primarily perform computational modelling to assist thermal therapy practitioners including Radiation Oncologists, Medical Oncologists, Dosimetrists, Radiation Therapists, Surgical Oncologists and Medical Physicists. He will design thermotherapy applicators and perform 3D simulations of temperature fields in deep, interstitial, and superficial tissue regions to optimize thermal therapy treatments. </span></p><p><span>This research is important, as it will provide 3D images of temperature profiles during thermotherapy treatment which facilitate Hyperthermia Treatment Planning and training of thermotherapy professionals. This research will highly contribute towards thermal oncology practices across the United States.</span></p><p><span><img src="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/me/posts/85567/attachments/32064" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></span></p><p><img src="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/me/posts/85567/attachments/32065" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></p></span></div>

<Title>ME PhD students submit five conference papers at SB3C</Title>

Powering wireless sensor nodes is the most attractive application of energy harvesting technology for various monitoring purposes for large-scale structures and machines such as bridges, railroad, wind turbines, and naval platforms, as well as biosystems, such as the human body and/or animals. An energy harvester needs to be designed to meet the power requirement of the sensor, and integrated with the sensor and a power management circuit for maximum power conversion and seamless</div><div>sensor operation.</div><div><br></div><div>Original contributions including the state-of-the-art, point out the benefits of emerging technologies, experimental studies, or investigate the novel schemes and applications are welcome to submit. <Title>Dr. Zupan, advisor to a winning team!</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><h3>Dr. Marc Zupan, Associate Professor, Mechanical Engineering, was an advisor to the team that won 1st prize at the 2019 bmeidea competition for "ASTEK".</h3><p>"Astek" focuses on rapid detection of bacterial presence in blood, in combination with antibiotic susceptibility, is essential in treatment of bloodstream bacterial infections. ASTEK is a device that identifies both bacterial presence and sensitivity to antibiotics in less than one hour. The approach relies on the isolation of bacteria from whole blood using a mosquito inspired microfluidic device, with subsequent visualization of the viable bacteria using fluorescent indicator.
