The BEYA STEM Conference sponsored by Career Communications Group (CCG) will be held February 13-15, 2020 as part of this large annual conference, representatives from several major corporations and universities will be on hand to meet with students pursuing careers in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields as well as Business, Finance, and Marketing.  Why should you attend?

The Career Fair portion of the conference on Friday and Saturday, is free of charge for UMBC students and alumni with an active UMBC email address. All students are welcome to attend. Dress to impress and bring plenty of updated resumes!

Free Shuttle Bus

There will be a free shuttle bus to transport students to and from the career fair on Friday or on Saturday. If you will need transportation, be sure to complete the shuttle bus registration form at the bottom of the registration page: https://careers2.umbc.edu/calendar/fairs/beyabus2020.php. Please note that the free shuttle bus is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.  In order to serve the most students, you may select only one day to ride the shuttle. The free shuttle will run only on Friday and Saturday between 8:15 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Transportation to and from other conference events (such as the BEYA Gala held Saturday evening) is on your own.

Using a combination of geothermal, wind and hydro energy sources, the nation of Costa Rica was able to produce 98% of its electric power last year without using oil. The city of San Jose will be the backdrop for learning the fundamentals of thermodynamics and converting heat and energy to mechanical work. The course will include a field trip to a sustainable energy power plant and to local cultural points of interest. Home stay accommodations provided by local family and language courses at Veritas University provide the perfect opportunity to develop your Spanish language skills whatever your current level. 

You will be introduced to the properties, characteristics and fundamental equations of state of materials, and the processes of work and heat transfer. First and second laws of thermodynamics, thermodynamic power and refrigeration cycles, gas/vapor mixtures and psychrometrics will also be discussed. The course will emphasize in class activities that are motivated by sustainable energy production and environmentally friendly practices.

On Friday, December 6, a poster session will be held in the ENGR Atrium from 10am – 1pm for the projects completed this year in the Mechanical Engineering capstone design class.  You are cordially invited to attend.  Projects this semester include:


·      Talk Box – an assistive device for non-verbal children and adults

·      Power Assisted Leg – energy harvesting device to power a prosthetic leg

·      Mutoscope – collaboration between Mechanical Engineering and Visual Arts to recreate an early moving picture device

·      Downspout Power – energy harvesting device to use rainwater to generate and store electricity for emergency lighting

·      Lacrosse Face-off – face-off training device for the UMBC Lacrosse team

·      Spartan Pivot – checking training device for the UMBC Lacrosse team

·      Virtual Reality Facility Cable Management System – system to minimize the effects of cables to VR facility users

·      Miracle’s Bicycle – adaptive bicycle for a girl with multiple leg/back disabilities

·      Regal Beloit Coupling Monitor – diagnostic monitoring device to detect imminent coupling failures

On November 2nd, some of our Mechie students exhibited tested projects they created from their sophomore design class. They are now Juniors, but wanted to bring their products to the resource fair. 

They all did an amazing job at St. Elizabeths disability resource fair. The impact was tangible: parents were crying in joy over the projects because of the lack in toys on the market to help keep their children engaged.

Dear Students,

We wanted to let you know about some free services available to you at UMBC.

Retriever Essentials - is a program to help students who are in need of food and clothing.  We have 6 locations across campus where one can pick up a bag of nutritionally balanced, non-perishable food and toiletries.  Locations are listed at https://retrieveressentials.umbc.edu/campus-food-zones/distribution-centers/ You are welcome to pick up extra food to tide you over during school breaks.  Please have your campus id with you when you visit one of our locations.  Last year we gave away 279 bags of food.

We have a Coat Closet on campus that provides free, gently used coats, hats, gloves and scarves to students who are unable to purchase these items or for whom it would be a hardship to purchase.  Last year we gave away 200 free coats!  To pick up something, please contact Julie Rosenthal at julier@umbc.edu

UMBC’s Idea Competition

Overview
Have an idea on how to improve or change the world? Burning up with ideas to help the environment, society, business, your friends, social media or anything else you can dream up? UMBC wants to give you $750 for telling us your idea! How can you win cash for your innovative solution? Read on!

The UMBC Idea competition is designed to challenge you to think about problems and opportunities facing society. If UMBC is one of the most innovative schools in the nation, then UMBC students are just the kind of innovators that can really change the world. Now’s your chance to make it happen.

Submit your idea online via the entry form. And you can also grab your camera or smartphone and post a YouTube video in which you pitch your idea. The top entries will be judged, live, by a panel of professionals and alumni along with a crowd of students at the final competition held November 14, 2019, at the Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery from 7-9pm. The top 3 winners, determined by the results of student and panel voting, will receive cash prizes up to $750.

How to Enter
To enter the competition, complete the UMBC Idea Competition Entry Form, which asks you to (i) describe a problem or opportunity, and (ii) describe your idea for addressing it. Submission forms will be limited to one page, so you will need to articulate the problem you have identified and your idea succinctly. You will also be allowed to post a video to YouTube in which you can personally pitch your idea to the campus. The videos are not required, but they are encouraged as an effective way to communicate ideas to the review committee. YouTube videos are limited to 60 seconds and creativity is encouraged. Videos longer than 60 seconds will not be considered by the judges.

Dr. Deepa Madan presented a paper during the Electrochemical Society conference (ECS) on Sunday, October 13th, in Atlanta Georgia.
Title: Studies on natural and environmental friendly flexible gel electrolyte in safe rechargeable batteries.


During the conference, Dr. Madan had the great privilege and honor to meet distinguished Professor M. Stanley Whittingham, who was just announced as the 2019 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry for his work on lithium-ion batteries. 

                                            Dr. Wittingham does not need a name tag!



As per the New York Times: "John B. Goodenough, M. Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino were recognized for research that has “laid the foundation of a wireless, fossil fuel-free society.” The batteries developed through his work with John B. Goodenough and Akira Yoshino are used in “everything from mobile phones to laptops and electric vehicles,” the Nobel committee said.
