UMBC International Education Services (IES) and the English Language Institute (ELI) have begun planning International Education Week 2020! IEW is a joint initiative between the US Department of State and the Department of Education hosted by universities annually in mid-November. It’s an opportunity to highlight international initiatives on campus, celebrate the international student population, and expose domestic students to international experiences they would not otherwise know.

Planning Committee Search:

IES and the ELI are looking to form a planning committee for International Education Week, and we would like a member(s) of your department to be a part of it. This committee will organize and promote UMBC’s International Education Week. They will ensure the week creates a fun, engaging, and educational week of programming for all members of the UMBC community. Currently, the committee meets biweekly and is in the early stages of the planning process

Event Proposal Submissions:

If no member of your department is able to join the planning committee, we are still strongly encouraging all departments across campus to get involved by hosting a virtual event, for students (current and prospective), staff, faculty and/or the wider UMBC community during IEW. A separate email will be sent at that time, with additional information on all things planning IEW Proposals and Events

Interested in a career in aerospace? The Brooke Owens Fellowship provides paid internships and executive mentorship to undergraduate women and gender minorities in the aerospace industry, including in engineering, science, policy, and business. The applicationis currently live until October 4th! 

Why apply? Fellows have interned at over 30 host companiessuch as SpaceX, Blue Origin and Boeing. Each cohort convenes for a 3-day summit in July (virtually during COVID-19) to build connections with their class and network with top aerospace professionals. In addition to a paid internship and summit experience, fellows are also matched with executive mentors— thinkCEOs and astronauts!

Earlier this summer, in response to national events, CWIT issued a Response to Racial Violence, which called on all of us to take action, educate ourselves, and take care of one another as we participate in the struggle for greater racial equity in our country. We also held our first CWIT Student Discussions of Race, which started with a Mosaic Center [Free]dom Friday event on July 31, and a follow-up CWIT-only debrief on August 6.

We are continuing that discussion by inviting you to participate in the Mosaic Center’s next [Free]dom Friday on September 18, 2:30-4pm, and another CWIT-only debrief on September 24, 2:30-4pm. We strongly encourage you to attend both parts. 

The goal of this series of discussions is to provide all of you with an opportunity to:

• Develop skills in talking about race and racial justice

• Share what you are doing and learning about racial justice

• Support each other in your understanding and action around racial justice

• Support each other as fellow CWIT community members, and strengthen the CWIT community as a whole

Please mark your calendars (this is already on the CWIT shared Google calendars) and RSVP to the Mosaic Center here. We want all CWIT community members to attend!

• UMBC’s Sherman STEM Teacher Scholars Program, in collaboration with The Shriver Center, is seeking applicants for the Reach Together Program. This new program engages UMBC students in mentoring and tutoring Baltimore City youth. Applicants should be in their second year at UMBC or beyond. Mentor-tutors will each provide targeted math tutoring for five students through an eight-week program (September 28 – November 20) with a week of training starting on September 21. Upon full completion of the program, mentor-tutors will receive a $1200 stipend.  
• Submit your application as soon as possible through this Google form and schedule a 15-minute interview between now and September 18.

The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center located in the Washington, DC area. As a member of our research staff, individuals will have an opportunity to support and improve government decision-making, policies, or processes.  We are actively recruiting for Summer Interns and Data Science Fellows. At the end of the month, we will start recruiting for Science, Technology and Policy Fellows.
