Asst Prof Deepa Madan develops bendable zinc-based batteries

<Tagline>Revolutionizing how consumers power devices used every day!</Tagline>

Madan’s work has received a phase 1 award from the Maryland Innovation
Initiative (MII). The MII is a partnership between the State of Maryland
and five academic research institutions in Maryland, including UMBC,
which promotes the commercialization of research conducted at the
universities involved. It helps to get innovative products to consumers
    more quickly.

The goal of this work is to develop a flexible, rechargeable zinc
battery (RZB) prototype that can be used in wearable devices such as
watches, wireless headphones, and health devices. “By demonstrating the
unique advantages of safety and design flexibility—which enables larger
battery footprint and, hence, better performance—we expect to enable RZB
commercialization and gain market share for wearable health monitoring
    devices,” Madan explains.

Enhanced durability is an additional benefit of the RZB technology.
These batteries can continue to safely generate power even if they are
    punctured, bent, or cut.

During testing, Madan and her students poked six holes in the plastic
that contained the battery. They found that the holes reduced the power
generated from 100 percent to about 88 percent. The remaining power was
still enough to power a small light.

Read more here.

We are relying on masking and distancing protocols to reduce on campus transmission while we await your test results. Given the shortage of testing in Maryland, we felt this was the fairest way to require an entry test.

How long will it take to receive my results?

UMBC cannot check on the status of individual tests. In general, it can take up to three business days to receive your results. Testing results from on-campus tests will be posted to your COVID Compliance Card in your myUMBC profile.

Is testing on campus safe?

We do believe testing on campus is safe, as long as community members follow instructions, pick up their kits, and swab in a location that is distanced from others. For the first week of classes, we are making additional testing and technical assistance available in the RAC (Monday - Wednesday 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.), in order to reduce any potential crowding at testing sites. In addition, it will be helpful to have most employees complete testing next week, before students return.

What if I recently tested positive? Should I test?

You are not required to test as you may continue to test positive for up to 90 days. You will need to report your result in order to be exempted from entry testing. Information on how to do this and when you can return to campus is available here.

Please email covid19@umbc.edu if you have any questions.

UMBC Racing News

Last weekend, UMBC Racing drove up to northern New York to
compete in a volunteer-run Baja competition, Oktobajafest. The competition
consisted of hill climb, acceleration, design, and Baja cross events, followed
by a 4.5-hour endurance race. UMBC Racing earned 9th in design and earned
5th in Baja cross, an event that tests your vehicle’s ground clearance and
suspension and your driver’s skill. This competition provided some much-needed
practice to a team that was only able to go to 1 competition in the last 2
years due to the pandemic. Our drivers got valuable seat time, design practice,
and we learned about more component failures to resolve in our 2022 vehicle
design. Oktobajafest was a blast and has put UMBC Racing on a course for
success in the 2022 Baja SAE season where we will be going to all three
competitions, New York, Tennessee, and Arizona.

An Introduction to Inertial Navigation From the Perspective of State Estimation

[Focus on Education]

Abstract

Inertial navigation determines the position and attitude of a vehicle using only accelerometers and rate gyros by integrating kinematic relations. Although modern navigation systems combine inertial navigation and the Global Positioning System (GPS) in the state estimation framework to improve the accuracy of position and attitude, inertial navigation remains essential for applications where either GPS is not accessible, such as under water and under ground, as well as where GPS can be jammed or spoofed. This article focuses on strapdown inertial navigation, where the sensors are hard-mounted to the vehicle, and thus rotate as the vehicle rotates. Within this context and under simplifying assumptions, this article investigates the relevance of state estimation techniques to inertial navigation in order to highlight the special challenges of this technology. The goal of this article is to provide a foundation for the basic concepts of inertial navigation in a form that is suitable for students and instructors in systems and control.

Read the article here.

Dr. Goel's website is here.

Dr. Madan receives TEDCO-MII grant!

Dr. Deepa Madan has received a TEDCO-MII (Maryland Innovation Initiative award) grant.

The objective of the funded project is to demonstrate a flexible rechargeable Zn battery (RZB) prototype and formulate a comprehensive plan for its commercialization for wearable device applications. Commercially available rechargeable batteries contain toxic, costly, and flammable materials (e.g., Li-based compounds and liquid electrolytes). These materials impose strict packaging requirements (to ensure safety) that result in rigid and bulky batteries of fixed shapes and sizes (e.g., coin cell, cylindrical, and prismatic). The funded project builds on the RZB technology (pioneered in Dr. Madan's lab at UMBC) that exploits abundantly available, non-toxic, and non-flammable materials (Zn for anode, MnO2 for cathode, and chitosan as gel electrolyte) to demonstrate a safe, scalable, and flexible RZB. By demonstrating the unique advantages of safety and design flexibility, which enables larger battery footprint and hence better performance, Dr. Madan expects to enable RZB commercialization for wearable device applications.
