Award presented on March 28, 2013 Dr. Manil Suri has been named a UMBC Presidential Teaching Professor for the period of 2013-16.

Suri joined the UMBC faculty in 1983.  His interest in teaching often expands outside of our campus, and his work, both inside and outside the field of mathematics, repeatedly engages audiences with UMBC. He has attracted tens of thousands of viewers on YouTube via his videos in mathematics, has spoken on mathematical topics on NPR and the BBC and has explained mathematics to artists and writers at artist colonies.

Her grades kept her on the President’s List throughout her time at UMBC; she was named Outstanding Senior in Mathematics, admitted to Phi Beta Kappa and awarded both a UMBC Premier Scholarship and an ITT Scholarship. She was a member of the Honors College and a Meyerhoff Scholars Affiliate, and she became active helping other students succeed, working as a teaching assistant in honors calculus. She volunteered extensively in the community as a member of the Shriver Living Learning Center, helping out in an inner city elementary school as a math volunteer one year and, more recently, teaching aerobics at a senior center. She has been awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship to study applied mathematics at Brown University.

The Weber award was established in 2006 in memory of Dr. Carl S. Weber, Assistant Professor Emeritus in the UMBC Department of Biological Sciences, as a tribute to his passion for classroom teaching.  The annual award honors a faculty member at UMBC with exceptional dedication to teaching as demonstrated by his or her enthusiasm, up-to-date teaching materials, effective mentoring, community service in the teaching area, approachability, rigorous learning requirements, coherent teaching philosophy and inspirational teaching style.

Each year the UMBC Alumni Association presents annual awards to honor alumni for their professional and personal achievements and service to the University. Dr. McCloskey is a senior cryptologic mathematician for the National Security Agency, where he has worked since 1968.

Seidman The conference, Advances in Control of Partial Differential Equations, is being held on October 28-29, 2006, in honor of the 70th birthday of UMBC Professor Thomas I. Seidman.

Dr. Seidman received his Ph.D. from New York University with K. O. Friedrichs in 1959. In his early career, he spent time both at national laboratories and in industry, before joining the faculty at Wayne State University and Carnegie Mellon University. In 1972, he moved to UMBC and is now serving UMBC in the 35th year.

With this conference, we will honor Dr. Seidman's outstanding research productivity, which includes over 150 papers with more than 60 collaborators, and his continuing research productivity publishing over 4 papers per year. His long and distinguished career over 50 years has particularly impacted the area of control of partial differential equations.
