Still Don't Know Where to Find an Internship? Don't Worry! Summer research opportunities are still available!

While many summer research programs have deadlines in January and February, there are still opportunities with deadlines in March and even into May! Some programs will even continue to accept applications until all positions are filled, so don't get distressed over a missed deadline and read the website information carefully (there may even be other opportunities available that are listed).

How to Find Summer Research
Besides asking a faculty member within your department or talking to your advisor, there are other places to find undergraduate research opportunities.

The Research Opportunities Page [https://ur.umbc.edu/summer-research/] lists a variety of searchable databases, opportunities for STEM students, those in the humanities, and even graduating seniors.

The MyMajors Page [https://ur.umbc.edu/home/mymajor/] features research presented by students in each major and lists some opportunities for that major.

The Summer Research Opportunities Spreadsheet [https://tinyurl.com/yd2o4y83]  lists 450+ research opportunities for almost every major and provides information such as when an internship was last updated on the sheet, what majors might be suited for it, and possible important information. Participants develop theoretical propositions that are tested empirically. Participants collect and analyze empirical data and report their findings in a public forum. Activities include workshops on theory development, computer simulations, research methodology, and the graduate school application process. At the conclusion of the program, students present their research at UNT and at a national political science conference. 

Benefits Include:
  • A $4000 stipend, 
  • Opportunities to present participant research results at local and national conferences,
  • Free room and board during the program, and 
  • Paid travel expenses
Potential research topics students might pursue include (but are not limited to):
  • External Intervention and Conflict Management
  • Foreign Aid and Political Stability in Post-Conflict Societies

Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) features research, scholarship, and creative work carried out by UMBC undergraduates. Student work is shared through oral presentations, posters, artistic exhibits, performances, and film. Over 300 presenters participate annually. Researchers work with faculty mentors on independent research, or research that is part of the mentor’s on-going projects.  They are from all disciplines, and can be working on a thesis, capstone project, part of a scholars or honors program, or they can be unaffiliated.This campus-wide celebration of achievement affirms UMBC’s commitment to the twin goals of research and a distinctive undergraduate experience.

All current undergraduates who have conducted research, scholarship or creative work in the last year may apply to present their results at URCAD. Mentors, fellow students, friends, family members, high school teachers and students, graduate school recruiters, and the general public are invited to attend.

The Bronze Age Körös Off-Tell Archaeology (BAKOTA) project is studying a Bronze Age cemetery population in Eastern Hungary, and aims to understand how this region intensified farming, craft production, and trade without corresponding increases in social inequality.

During this six week program, selected undergraduate students will: 1) work with an international research team while they analyze archaeological material, 2) participate in seminars and workshops taught by experts on archaeological method and theory and the cultural history of Eastern Europe, 3) visit museums and archaeological sites, 4) plan and complete an independent research project with a faculty mentor, and 5) live in a small town and learn about life in Hungary from the villagers, Hungarian students, and visiting project participants. Professional development mentoring will take place before the program starts, throughout the research season, and post-project. Participants will also receive training in ethical and equitable fieldwork codes of conduct, including Responsible Conduct in Research (RCR) and sexual harassment awareness training.

Applicants are asked to choose one independent research project from the list below (full descriptions on website):

Chemical Analysis of Burials from Early and Middle Bronze Age Cemeteries: For this project a student will learn how to prepare previously excavated archaeological samples from cemeteries throughout the Carpathian Basin for FTIR, trace element and isotopic analysis. 
Recommended interests/skills: Chemistry, human osteology

Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of Burned Human Bone: Aims to better understand Bronze Age cremation practices using quantitative and qualitative techniques. 
Recommended interests/skills: Human osteology, math & statistics

Ceramic Provenance: Aims to understand patterns of trade through the movement of fine ceramics in prehistory. 
Recommended interests/skills: Chemistry, math & statistics, ceramic analysis.

Ceramic Stylistic Analysis: Aims to develop an understanding of patterning of stylistic elements on mortuary ceramics. 
Recommended interests/skills: ceramic analysis, math & statistics, archaeological comparison, Hungarian and German language skills.

Her father was a well-known neurologist and Kudrow intended on becoming one herself before getting her break on "Friends".
