DC Poet Jordann Allen to Join Filmmaker Ezra Pailer at URCAD

Come see Ezra Pailer's animated documentary about the poetry of Jordann Allen at URCAD on Wednesday, April 25th at 3:15pm in UC 310. Allen will join Palier for the Q&A after the screening. Popcorn will be served!
In collaboration with D.C.poet Jordann Allen, this animated documentary presents a selection of her writings and reveals how an artist’s intimate realms of imagery can be expressed across both visual and spoken mediums. The film provides a vivid glimpse into the worlds of Allen’s personal symbolism by combining hand-drawn animation with live-action film.
This work was funded, in part, through an Undergraduate Research Award from the UMBC Division of Undergraduate Academic Affairs.

Come to URCAD on Wednesday, April 25, Chemistry and Biochemistry major Siya Bhagat will present her research "Dendritic Delivery System for Chemotherapy Drug Cisplatin".
Ideal drug treatment for cancer requires that cancer cells be targeted with high efficiency, accuracy, and potency. Current treatment for cancer metastasis consists largely of chemotherapy drugs. However, due to its nonspecificity, many healthy cells are detrimentally affected, limiting its overall use. Drug delivery systems, specifically gold nanoparticles, have the potential to selectively target cancer cells and deliver a controlled yet potent dosage of chemotherapy drugs.

22nd Annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day… April 25, 2018
Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) features research, scholarship, and creative work carried out by UMBC undergraduates. Student work is shared through oral presentations, posters, artistic exhibits and performances, and film.
Over 350 presenters participate annually. Researchers work with faculty mentors on independent research, or research that is part of the mentor’s on-going projects. They are from all disciplines, and can be working on a thesis, capstone project, part of a scholars or honors program, or they can be unaffiliated with other programs.
Students who have received Undergraduate Research Awards (URA) for the previous year will be presenting their findings. The UMBC Review, UMBC’s annual peer-reviewed research journal, which features academic papers written by UMBC undergraduates, makes its debut at this event- stop by and get your copy! Come hear the alumni keynote speaker talk about their experiences after UMBC, and how being an undergraduate researcher benefited them.
UMBC is unique in providing this opportunity for undergraduate students to conduct and present their research in a professional and supportive setting. Students get valuable feedback from their peers, faculty, and staff, and practice their public speaking and presentations skills. This campus-wide celebration of achievement affirms UMBC’s commitment to the twin goals of research and a distinctive undergraduate experience.

URCAD IS ONE WEEK FROM TODAY! APRIL 25, 2018
Over 350 Student Presenters, Food and Fun
Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) features research, scholarship, and creative work carried out by UMBC undergraduates. Student work is shared through oral presentations, posters, artistic exhibits and performances, and film.
Over 350 presenters participate annually. Researchers work with faculty mentors on independent research, or research that is part of the mentor’s on-going projects. They are from all disciplines, and can be working on a thesis, capstone project, part of a scholars or honors program, or they can be unaffiliated with other programs.Students who have received Undergraduate Research Awards (URA) for the previous year will be presenting their findings. The UMBC Review, UMBC’s annual peer-reviewed research journal, which features academic papers written by UMBC undergraduates, makes its debut at this event- stop by and get your copy! Come hear the alumni keynote speaker talk about their experiences after UMBC, and how being an undergraduate researcher benefited them.
UMBC is unique in providing this opportunity for undergraduate students to conduct and present their research in a professional and supportive setting. Students get valuable feedback from their peers, faculty, and staff, and practice their public speaking and presentations skills. This campus-wide celebration of achievement affirms UMBC’s commitment to the twin goals of research and a distinctive undergraduate experience.

The contest starts on the evening of April 24 and will continue until the 27th at 6:00 p.m. To be eligible to win the contest, you must follow the steps outlined below including uploading your original photo to FaceBook, Instagram or Twitter using #umbcURCAD.
All entries will be judged on or about Friday, April 27, 2018 (the “Judging Date”) by a panel of judges comprised of URCAD representatives.
Walk the red carpet/photo booth at URCAD, located in the UC Ballroom Lobby. Props will be provided. A great place to take a selfie and make URCAD memories!
Steps to officially enter and share your photos to the Selfies Photo Contest:
- You must be in the photo to be considered a selfie
- You must give permission as well as get permission of co/participants in your selfie itself
- All selfies must be taken during URCAD
- Take a photo and upload it to twitter using #umbcURCAD. You must upload it here to be able to participate
- We also recommend adding a title and caption to your photo explaining what is going on in the photo. You may enter as many times as you wish, but each entry must be unique
Deadline to enter this contest is April 27, 2018 at 6:00 p.m.

Baltimore and D.C. are home to remarkable communities of writers and artists who use poetry as a powerful tool to explore personal inner narratives. I’ve collaborated with D.C. area poet Jordann Allen to create an animated documentary that presents a selection of her writings and reveals how an artist’s intimate realms of imagery can be expressed across both visual and spoken mediums.
