Investigations Of The Acidity And Liquid Water Content Of Chesapeake Bay Aerosols During The OWLETS-2 Campaign

This study characterized aerosol acidity and liquid water content over the Chesapeake Bay during the OWLETS-2 (Ozone Water Land Environmental-Transition Study) campaign. Aerosols are minute solid particles or liquid droplets that are suspended in the atmosphere. Those aerosols that are 2.5 μm or smaller in diameter (i.e. PM2.5) are of particular importance to human health because of their potential to penetrate deeply into the lungs and cause an array of adverse health outcomes. Measurements of inorganic PM2.5 composition and gas-phase ammonia were undertaken at the Hart-Miller Island supersite, which lies east of Baltimore on the Chesapeake Bay. The location of the measurement site was important for multiple reasons, including its proximity to cattle and poultry farms and the influence of the bay as a source/sink of gases. The median aerosol pH for this study was 2.31, which was higher (less acidic) than the median aerosol pH predicted for a site in downtown Baltimore during the summer (1.27). Additionally, pH and aerosol liquid water did not exhibit strong diurnal variations, in contrast to other sites in the eastern U.S. during the summer. These results suggest a strong influence of the Chesapeake Bay and the surrounding area on aerosol chemistry.

"There are three different awards this year," noted Brian, who was interviewed while blow drying his luxurious hair. "You've got the usual award, open to all majors and worth up to $1,500 and then you've got the Social Science award and the entrepreneurship award. Pretty amazing opportunity. And the deadline isn't until May 1st, so we've got plenty of time!"
"Really does help us with our research," added Larry, who was interviewed while combing his mustache. "And you can even apply as a group!"
URA’s provide up to $1,500 to undergraduate students to support their research or creative work with a UMBC faculty mentor on an original project. UMBC students of all years and disciplines are invited to apply, as long as they will remain enrolled at UMBC long enough to complete the proposed work.

Dr. Grollman will speak from 12-1pm on Wednesday, April 24th, in UC 312.
Dr. Eric Anthony Grollman(they/them/theirs) is a Black queer non-binary intellectual activist and Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Richmond. Their research spans three areas: the negative impact of discrimination on victims’ health; sexual orientation differences in social and political attitudes; and, the limits of dominant group members’ tolerance of marginalized groups. They recently co-edited an anthology entitled Counternarratives from Women of Color Academics: Bravery, Vulnerability, and Resistance with Dr. Manya C. Whitaker. In promoting social justice in and through sociology, they founded the blog ConditionallyAccepted.com(a weekly career advice column for marginalized academics on Inside Higher Ed), co-founded Sociologists for Trans Justice, and pursued various initiatives to address sexual violence in academia.
Dr. Grollman(’07) began at UMBC as a MeyerhoffScholar majoring in math before leaving the program to double major in sociology and psychology, and pursue a certificate in gender and women’s studies. They served as secretary of the Freedom Alliance, and secretary and then president of the Student Events Board. As a scholar-activist, they pushed for the creation of a campus resource center for LGBTQ students (“the Rainbow Center”), using their honors thesis research to document the prevalence of anti-lesbian and -gay attitudes on UMBC’s campus as evidence that such a center was needed. They presented the findings of their honors thesis at URCAD in 2007, published their thesis in the UMBC Review in 2008, and later co-authored a paper in International Journal of Sexual Health with their advisor, Dr. IlsaLottes, using their honors thesis data.
