A Guide to Winning the URCAD Selfie Contest at Home

At first, you might think - "Don (or, your name if you're doing the thinking)- how in the world could I possibly win a selfie contest when I'm stuck at home in filthy pajamas?" Thankfully, it is indeed possible and I will quickly show you how.
First- you may wish to show yourself in front of your computational device looking at your own presentation (see my example). Or, (and this may very well blow your mind), show yourself looking at a friend in front of their computational device and have them look at your presentation too. YOU ARE BOTH LOOKING AT YOUR OWN PRESENTATION!!! What an incredible time to be alive!
Second- try taking a selfie in front of something that you use in your research. Might be a microscope, a paint brush, or a heap of old suitcases in your basement. Remember- research can be anything.
Once you have mastered these techniques (and I am confident you will), upload your selfie to FaceBook, Instagram and/or Twitter using #umbcURCAD for a chance to win one of four gift cards to the UMBC Bookstore!

It is with great pleasure that I declare the opening of UMBC’s 24th Annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD)! Throughout the week, from April 22-29th, you will be able to view and comment on student presentations from across all disciplines.
Converting URCAD from an on-campus, day-long symposium to an online event is supported by a technology called VoiceThread (VT), an asynchronous (“not in real time”) platform for viewing and interacting with the presenters. This means visitors will be able to view students’ research posters and slides, as well as art, performances, films, and video games, and be able to leave video, voice, or text feedback for the presenters. Students will respond to questions and receive feedback over the course of the week-long event.
Our resilient students have worked arduously on their research and creative work, and enthusiastically embraced the new presentation format, and I hope you take some time to view their projects. Please also enjoy some of the other URCAD events, such as the video by keynote speaker, Dr. Keisha John, who is introduced by her former mentor, Dr. Rachel Brewster, the welcome message from UAA Dean Katharine Cole, and don’t forget to take a selfie/screenshot to share at #umbcURCAD to be eligible to win a prize in the URCAD Selfie Contest. We hope to preserve the spirit of URCAD and make this a meaningful, learning, sharing, and celebratory event for our campus community.

"I have a very steady hand, very good camera control," averred Hanebrink, who was interviewed while standing on industrial carpeting featuring a rather vague design. "I'm able to get my camera out of my pocket quite speedily so that I never miss a good shot. Yep, the selfie is right in my wheelhouse."
