URCAD Sneak Peek: Devon Fick

Developed after WWII for the purpose of stabilizing local currency and preventing exchange-rate corruption involving the desirable American dollar, the MPC initiative was relatively successful throughout the 1950's and into the early years of American involvement in Vietnam. However, as the war dragged on, and systemic leadership and organizational problems at all levels became commonplace, the MPC became the very thing it was designed to deter; a hopelessly corrupt and abused form of currency. This presentation will show how MPC’s were viewed by American servicemen and Vietnamese merchants and citizens and the frequently-evolving laws governing their use. The highly contentious “C-Days” (Conversion Days) when American servicemen were required to remain on base so that a new series of MPC could be issued, will be described as well as the aftermath of these days which often led to increased graft and even violence. The colorful banknotes will also make for a highly-visual presentation and also include interviews with three Vietnam veterans who will describe their personal experiences with this military currency.

Nursing homes, or skilled nursing facilities, provide 24/7 medical care for those who need short term rehabilitation and those for whom the nursing home is their permanent home due to their level of health needs (National Institute on Aging, 2017). With many residents residing for a decade or more in the same community, relationships form between staff and residents (Ådland et al., 2021). Consequently, feelings of extreme grief and distress may be expressed by staff when residents pass away and the repetition of loss can take a major toll on mental wellbeing, due to a lack of opportunity to step back and grieve (Ådland et al.,2021). A review of the literature exploring the impact of grief and loss, following the passing of nursing home residents, on the staff who care for them will be provided. Recommendations for practice will be made and a strategy presented that can be implemented within the long term healthcare field to support formal caregivers when coping with the loss of residents with whom they may have formed deep connections.

The Black church has been one of these politically transformed spaces that have been impactful in promoting movements around political ideologies. The Black body is political, and so are all cultural and religious practices from that experience. This research uses ethnographic and choreographic practices to explore themes of embodied Blackness, relational power, and institutionally-bound socio-political obligations. This research considers the question: how do congregants within Black Religious Institutions identify with their role in the political landscape that has led to change in diplomacy, legislation, awareness and transparency, civic engagement, and rights expansion -- even on a microscale. Through collecting and interpreting oral histories within Black Religious Institutions, these stories and interactions informed a new contemporary choreographic work and an inquiry into choreographic methodologies foregrounding Africanist movement expression and values.

Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) features research, scholarship, and creative work carried out by UMBC undergraduates. Student work is shared through oral presentations, posters, artistic exhibits, performances, and film. Over 300 presenters participate annually. Researchers work with faculty mentors on independent research, or research that is part of the mentor’s on-going projects. They are from all disciplines, and can be working on a thesis, capstone project, part of a scholars or honors program, or they can be unaffiliated. This campus-wide celebration of achievement affirms UMBC’s commitment to the twin goals of research and a distinctive undergraduate experience.

My friend was told to shift his focus, and thereby that of his team, from producing to progressing. My brain went from “wait, what?” to “Oh WOW!” Jewel dropped…

“We must always set the bar high, otherwise we do not progress.” Kylian Mbappé

“The way that you grow is by making constant progress towards your goals. First, you make a plan; Then you execute. Part of the plan won't work and part of it will work. The way that you grow is by scaling what works and ignoring the noise of what everyone else is doing better.” ― Geoffrey Ocaya

“There’s always something to suggest that you’ll never be who you wanted to be. What if we really focused on progress. I get the potential resistance to the notion. After all, progress isn’t graded, performance is. There are performance metrics now and there will be in everything that you do. You can think about all of this differently by intentionally centering making progress. I am asking you to focus on progress and progress, the noun and the verb, and to focus on what progress inherently requires, a goal to move toward and actively measuring your movement towards it. That goal can be anything from finishing an assignment to preparing for a test to working on multi-year research project. You can even set abstract goals like deeply understanding fundamental concepts. Measuring progress will remind you that you are in fact moving forward and alert you if you are not. Every day when you get up, be committed to doing something, anything to get you closer to one or more of your goals.

“You don't make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas.” – Shirley Chisholm

“Progress comes at a price. You have to be willing to make tough calls and take the hits.” – Aja Brown

Let’s be clear though, I am not saying that you can barely show up or not show up at all and say “but I made progress...” You still need to put forth maximum effort. Along with that effort, do self-checks on the progress you are making on whatever the goal is and adjust accordingly. Progress can also act as an insulator from the noise from outside and the voice from inside that questions your understanding or your effort or your ability. Use it to lend focus to your efforts. There is a difference between starting a study session saying I am going to work on this assignment for an hour and saying I am going to work on this assignment until I am X% done. X can be any nonzero number up to 100, but if it’s really small, you might want to raise the bar a bit… JS. Be realistic with your goals too, don’t plan to do two weeks’ worth of work in one two-hour session. Pie in the sky may be delicious, but it’s hard to say for sure because, well, who can reach it? Bottom line, you’ve got everything you need within you to become your best self. Keep making progress towards that (even if it’s towards figuring out who your best self is) and before you know it, you’ll be past that and on to the next. And you don’t have to do it all by yourself, teamwork makes the dream work.

“Dreams are lovely. But they are just dreams. Fleeting, ephemeral, pretty. But dreams do not come true just because you dream them. It's hard work that makes things happen. It's hard work that creates change.” – Shonda Rhimes

“Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.”— Booker T.
