Bioinspired Robotics Research Experiences for Undergraduates

<Tagline>Interdisciplinary systems research internship</Tagline>

The Maryland Robotics Center, with support from the National Science Foundation, is offering exciting research opportunities for undergraduate students in the area of bioinspired robotics. Bioinspired robots—defined as robots that are inspired by natural systems such as insects, birds, mammals, and reptiles—have the potential to significantly enable or enhance capabilities in manufacturing, health care, reconnaissance, exploration, food safety, and search and rescue. Because of their unique design, bioinspired robotics offer a truly interdisciplinary systems research challenge that encompasses biology, materials, mechanical design, control, sensors and actuators, power, electronics, and computer science among other topics.

Program Goals

The Bioinspired Robotics REU Site aims to:

Teach students about bioinspired robotics and the applicable technologies and applications

Engage talented and diverse students in interdisciplinary research programs

Prepare students for graduate school or research jobs in industry and labs

Introduce undergraduates to team-based interdisciplinary research

Build a strong community between undergraduates, graduate student mentors, and faculty

During the 10-week summer program, students will develop research projects, attend technical tutorial seminars, visit local government labs involved in bioinspired robotics research, attend professional and academic development seminars, and tour Maryland’s top-notch facilities supporting robotics research including the UMd FabLab and Neutral Bouyancy Research Facility. Lunch discussions will provide an informal setting for students and mentors to discuss technical and non-technical topics. The program culminates in student presentations on their summer research.

The program will run from June 5 through August 11, 2017

The deadline to apply is FEBRUARY 17, 2017

Benefits include:

a $5,000 stipend for their summer work and funding is available for on-campus housing and travel support.

Suggested majors include (but are not limited to):

Mechanical Engineering,

Computer Science and Electrical Engineering,

Bioengineering,

Materials Science,

Bioinformatics and

Computational Biology

Biological Sciences

Click on the link below to read more about this opportunity and see if you are eligible to apply. The site takes advantage of a vigorous multidisciplinary effort that involves near surface geophysics, urban geochemistry and urban ecology in northern New Jersey and especially, the New Jersey Meadowlands. Each scholar will choose one area of specialization but the research and support activities will be integrated to show students:

how their research experience relates to the whole urban research project,

how their research affects real-life issues that affect them and their families and

how they can pursue research careers stemming from this experience.

Research Areas (see the website for full project descriptions):

Near Surface Geophysics

The Near Surface Geophysics Group (NSGG) at Rutgers is engaged in research to develop emerging geophysical technologies for minimally invasive characterization and monitoring of urban environments.

Urban Geochemistry/Biogeochemistry

REU students will pursue research projects in the field of urban geochemistry/biogeochemistry in the polluted urban environment.
Researcher of the Week: Gabrielle Salib

<Tagline>Undergraduate researchers explore their interests!</Tagline>

Meet Gabrielle,

She is an Interdisciplinary Studies major and an Meyerhoff Scholar. Her future goal is to persue her Ph.D. and to continue her career in research. She would like to improve upon our understanding of the interaction that children have with technology and how to design their technology to accordingly better that interaction. On her off time she is also involved with the Computer Science Education club and the Orthodox Christian group.

Gabrielle's research explores the possibilities of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology and it's possible uses in the educational settings within the traditional curriculum. As part of a longitudinal study, her research team will be conducting weekly 3D modeling and printing workshops at a selected Baltimore school. By observing and recording the students’ reactions, collaborations, and frustrations while learning 3D modeling and printing in this setting, we will be able to observe benefits and repercussions of 3D modeling and printing in an educational setting.

Read more about her research here…
