Gatorade was first developed in 1965 by a team of researchers led by Dr. Robert Cade at the University of Florida to replenish the carbohydrates that the school's student-athletes burned and the combination of water and electrolytes that they lost in sweat during rigorous sport activities, like football practice. The name refers to the school's mascot, the Florida gator. Gatorade was bought by PepsiCo in 2000, and is sold in over 80 countries world-wide. The brand is worth $4.8 billion.

Networked Cyber Physical Systems (NetCPS) Internship
Conduct cutting-edge research on networked CPS
What are Networked Cyber Physical Systems? Cyber-physical systems (CPS) are engineered systems that are built from, and depend upon, the seamless integration of computational algorithms and physical components.
Wichita State University's (WSU) Research Experiences for Undergraduates in NetCPS program is an opportunity for undergraduate students to spend a summer working with faculty researchers renowned in areas such as computer networks, mobile computing, wireless communications, and information security and privacy. A number of projects are available in diverse areas. Accepted students will work closely with WSU faculty and researchers on research problems with the potential for publications and significant impact on the future practice of various networked CPS.
Students will:
- Conduct cutting-edge research on networked CPS.
- Spend 9 weeks in the Department of EECS at WSU, home to one of the very few M.S. programs in Computer Networking in the country.
- Receive mentoring from renowned faculty in their fields.
- Learn research skills through seminars and presentations throughout the summer and work with graduate students from around the world.
Benefits include:
- A stipend of $500 a week (total $4500 for 9 weeks).
- Furnished on-campus housing.
- A meal allowance (worth $1080).
- A travel allowance to come to and return from the site.
- Social and professional development events throughout the site duration.

Since 2008, Dr. John McWhorter has taught linguistics, American Studies, and in the Core Curriculum program at Columbia University.
McWhorter has published a number of books on linguistics and on race relations, of which the better known are Power of Babel: A Natural History of Language, Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue: The Untold History of English, Doing Our Own Thing: The Degradation of Language and Music and Why You Should, Like, Care, and Losing the Race: Self-Sabotage in Black America. He makes regular public radio and television appearances on related subjects.

- recruiting and consenting participants,
- scheduling evaluations,
- administering surveys and taking anthropometric measures in elementary and middle schools,
- data entry, and other administrative duties.
We are looking for dedicated and enthusiastic individuals to join our team. Full and part time positions are available.
Required Qualifications:
- An interest in Nutrition, Exercise Science, Public Health, Community Health, Epidemiology or a related field
- Experience working with children and/or adolescents
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Great organizational skills and detail-oriented
- Ability to work afternoons and evenings
- Ability to transport equipment and travel to school sites
- Experience following strict research protocols preferred
- Ability to work 10 hours/week or more is required

The Curry School of Education at UVA would like to invite current junior students to take part in the SURP program. The 2018 SURP Application is now available, so please forward to interested students!
The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) is a 10-week internship that provides undergraduates from underrepresented groups with valuable research and professional development experience.
SURP interns will:
- Present research at Leadership Alliance National Symposium (LANS) as well as a UVA research symposium.
- Work hands-on in research with UVA faculty mentor(s) and graduate student mentor(s).
- Participate in workshops on research methods and the grad school application process, and enroll in an intensive GRE preparation course.
Benefits:
- A $3000 stipend and some travel and meal expenses.
- Housing in a university residence hall.
Eligible interns must:
- Be a member of a group that is underrepresented in educational research.
- Be a current junior, with 2 semesters or less to complete after the internship.

David Duchovny, who later went on to fame in The X-Files and Californication was an award-winning researcher and poet at Princeton University? He graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1982 with an A.B. in English literature and won an honorable mention from the Academy of American Poets! The title of his senior thesis was The Schizophrenic Critique of Pure Reason in Beckett's Early Novels.

Five of the six cast members of the famed British comedy troupe "Monty Python's Flying Circus" developed their interest in performing while students at a university. Michael Palin and Terry Jones were both students at Oxford; John Cleese, Graham Chapman and Eric Idle at Cambridge.
All five performed onstage in university comedy sketch shows before moving on to television and film.

Technology research at universities has led to some developments that we all recognize. The first graphical computer game, called OXO, was developed by A.S. Douglas at Cambridge University in 1952 for the Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator (EDSAC) computer, which simulates the game, noughts and crosses. It was one of the first games developed in the early history of video games. The player entered their input using a rotary telephone controller, selecting which of the nine squares on the board they wished to move next. Douglas programmed the game as part of a thesis on human-computer interaction at Cambridge.
