    <div class="html-content"><h2><span>Here are the deadlines for the Senate Elections.</span></h2><div><div><p><span>Nominations Open: March 4th, 8 am</span></p><p><span>Nominations Close: March 25th, 8 pm</span></p><p><span>Voting Opens: April 5th, 8 am</span></p><p><span>Voting Closes: April 20th, 8 pm</span></p><p><span> </span></p><h3><strong>Interested in running for Senate but not sure what the position includes? </strong></h3><p><span> </span></p><p><span>Yearly, interested graduate students will </span><a href="https://forms.gle/oLQX37tqKpsGvJqh8" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">submit nominations</a><span> to the Graduate Senate to express an interest in being a graduate senator for either the applicants's college and or for the Student Affairs group. Senators are elected members who represent some portion of the graduate student body and compose the entirety of the Graduate Senate.</span></p><p> </p><h3><u><span><a href="https://forms.gle/oLQX37tqKpsGvJqh8" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Click here to submit a nomination for a Senator Position</a></span></u></h3><p><span> </span></p><p><span>The Graduate Senate is composed of 4 senators from each of the following 4 groups: </span></p><p><span>1. Student Affairs (Cultural, Religious, Social, Professional Interest Groups)</span></p><p><span> </span></p><p><span>Meet the current </span><a href="https://gsa.umbc.edu/graduate-senators/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Senators</a><span>! </span></p><p> </p><h3><strong>Who is eligible?<br></strong><strong> <br></strong><strong>ALL GRADUATE STUDENTS, that includes Masters and Ph.Ds.!</strong></h3><p><span>You must be in GOOD academic standing. GPA of 3.0 or higher.</span></p><h3><span> <br></span><p><strong>All Graduate Students who are graduating Spring 2025 or any Spring Graduation date thereafter.</strong><span> <span>(Terms are 1 year and begin July 1 and ending June 30 of the following year)</span></span></p></h3><p><span> </span></p><p><strong>Duties:</strong></p><p><span>Senators must represent the concerns and opinions of their constituency,</span></p><p><span>Senators must report on the proceedings of Senate Meetings to their constituency,</span></p><p><span>Senators must attend all Senate Meetings</span></p><p><span>Senators must host at least three (3) Town Hall meetings per Academic Year.</span></p><p><span>Senators must join and remain active on at least one university committee.</span></p><p><span> </span><span>Senators must report back the affiliated university committee meeting updates.</span></p><p><strong>Length of Term:</strong></p><p><span>Please keep in mind, the length of term for Senators shall be for <strong>one year</strong>, beginning on July 1 and ending June 30 of the following year.     <div class="html-content"><div>The Language, Literacy, and Culture Program is pleased to announce that <strong>Michael Hunt </strong>of LLC Cohort 21 successfully and skillfully presented his dissertation research proposal to his committee on March 12, 2024.</div><div><br></div><div>Michael's project is titled, <em>The Voices of Mentees: Exploration of Holistic Critical Mentoring with the UMBC McNair Scholars Program.</em><br></div><div><br></div><div>After his presentation, Michael had a substantive discussion with the committee about the next stages of his work.     <div class="html-content"><div><strong>What is Meet and Confer (M&amp;C)?</strong></div><div>Meet and Confer (M&amp;C) is a policy within the University System of Maryland (USM) that allows Graduate Assistants to participate in formal discussions with the administration regarding employment-related matters, including compensation and benefits. To learn more about M&amp;C, please visit the <a href="https://gsa.umbc.edu/meet-confer/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC website.</a></div><div><br></div><div><strong>M&amp;C Meetings- Spring '24</strong></div><div>This year, we have adopted a new approach by organizing separate M&amp;C meetings for each college at UMBC. This strategy is designed to address specific issues facing Graduate Assistants within individual colleges and departments in a more focused manner. Additionally, we have extended invitations to department chairs to ensure that department-level administration actively participates in resolving GA-related concerns, in collaboration with graduate school administration.</div><div><br></div><div>The <strong>CAHSS M&amp;C Meeting is scheduled for April 15th</strong>, and we strongly encourage all <strong>GAs from CAHSS Departments</strong> to complete <strong>the <a href="https://forms.gle/W5V74R9XvHG3LpyA6" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">survey</a></strong>. <Title>Do you want to see changes to the UMBC academic calendar?</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><span>The faculty have been considering changes to future academic calendars, and there is both need and widespread desire for some change, such as the addition of a fall break. At the same time, for certain course schedules, we are currently out of compliance with the minimum 750 minutes per credit hour students need to be in class for our accreditation.</span></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>But what changes would work best for the most stakeholders?</span><br><br><span>There will be no changes this fall, but if you would like to see particular changes in future, <strong>please reach out to your Graduate Program Director (GPD) to share your perspective.</strong> The Faculty Senate President will reach out to the GPDs to find out what we want and need so that the faculty may take that into account when making future decisions.</span><br><br><span>Of course, we cannot simply take away 1-3 days of class during the semester without adding some way(s) to make up for the lost time. Two proposals that the faculty did not choose to institute this fall are discussed in the attached document, to give you an idea of the kinds of possibilities that have been suggested so far. When you reach out to your GPD, be sure to include your answers to the questions below:</span><br><br><span>Would you like to see any changes to the academic calendar (such as the addition of a fall break, the addition of a day off the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and/or other changes)? Which specific changes are most important to you and why?
