Jessica Burstrem Successfully Presents
her dissertation research proposal
The Language, Literacy, and Culture Program is pleased to announce that Jessica Burstrem of LLC Cohort 23 successfully and skillfully presented her dissertation research proposal on June 17, 2024.
Jessica's project is titled, “Interested: How Shareholder Advocacy and 50 Years of Indigenous Activism Changed the Game and the Name of the Washington Football Team."
After her presentation, Jessica had a substantive discussion with her committee about the next stages of her work. The committee agreed that the project is worthy of doctoral research and helped Jessica consider some key issues as she moves forward into the research and writing.

Three Awardees of LLC's Publicly Engaged Research
and Storywork Fellowship
The Language, Literacy, and Culture Program is pleased to announce that three of its doctoral students have received a Publicly Engaged Research and Storywork Fellowship this spring. The funds for this fellowship program were earmarked by Professor Beverly Bickel, LLC Clinical Research Professor Emerita, before her retirement in 2022.
Jessica Burstrem (cohort 23) for "Interested: How Shareholder Advocacy and 50 Years of Indigenous Activism Changed the Game and the Name of the Washington Football Team." Jessica plans to use her funding to perform community-based participatory research with members of American Indian Tribal Nations in Wisconsin who were active in the shareholder advocacy phase of this movement.
Dane Galloway (cohort 26) for "Unpacking the Home." Dane plans to use their funds to produce a short ethnographic documentary on family rituals of remembering, turning the camera homeward to capture the details and dilemmas of their own family's relocation ritual of transposing the visual family history from one set of walls to another.
Gina Lewis (cohort 25) for "Seneca Community Church Story Quilt Project." Gina plans to use her funds to support the activities and creation of a story quilt with the church community that is geographically situated within an African American descendant community in Germantown, MD, and whose cemetery is located on the grounds of the National Park Service's Seneca Stone Cutting Mill and Quarry historic site.

Meet Candidates (virtual) for Title IX Coordinator position
The Office of Equity and Civil Rights (ECR) will be hosting three (3) ECR Director and Title IX Coordinator candidates for campus visits. Students are invited to attend a virtual session to meet with and ask questions of each candidate.
These Q&A sessions are open to all students and will be held as follows:
- Tuesday, June 18th - 11:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.
- Monday, June 24th - 12:50 p.m. - 1:35 p.m.
- Tuesday, June 25th - 12:55 p.m. - 1:40 p.m.
Students must RSVP by clicking this
link to attend. At the conclusion of each session, students who attend will receive a survey via email to provide feedback on each candidate.
We hope that you can join at least one of these sessions, as UMBC recognizes that student feedback is essential in helping to identify an ideal candidate for this position.

At the Language, Literacy, and Culture Program's 25th Anniversary Celebration this spring, Dr. Jodi Crandall, founding director of the LLC Program and Professor Emerita, announced two awardees of her Jodi Crandall Dissertation Completion Grant.
Michael Hunt and Adam Holden expect to defend their dissertations in the coming academic year and this funding will give them some flexibility to step back from their day-to-day responsibilities and focus on their research and writing.

The Climate Futures policy event brought together distinguished speakers from academia, government, and nonprofit organizations.
Serena Coleman McIlwain is the Secretary of the Environment for the state of Maryland, having assumed the role under the administration of Governor Wes Moore in March of 2023.
Dr. Meghan Avolio is Associate Professor of Earth & Planetary Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University.
Sarah T. Koser serves as Restoration Program Manager at the Chesapeake Bay Trust.
Julieta Rodrigo is Urban and Community Resilience Manager at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
Brady Walker is Head of US Government Affairs and Market Strategy at Ørsted, a major Danish energy firm specializing in green energy delivery, and is also a UMBC Sondheim Scholars Program alumnus.

John Lawton Successfully Presents
his dissertation research proposal
The Language, Literacy, and Culture Program is pleased to announce that John Lawton of LLC Cohort 21 successfully and skillfully presented his dissertation research proposal on May 17, 2024.
John's project is titled, “Virtue 3.0." Virtue 3.0 explores the complex web of relations between modern communications technologies and shifting conceptualizations of virtue. This project examines the intersections of culture, psychology, economy, technology, and morality and suggests that virtue is currently undergoing a profound intergenerational transfiguration, which will be accompanied by unprecedented opportunities and challenges.
After his presentation, John had a substantive discussion with his committee about the next stages of his work. The committee agreed that the project is worthy of doctoral research and helped John consider some key issues as he moves forward into the research and writing.
