Announcing Families in Perilous Times: A Council on Contemporary Families (CCF) Policy and Public Scholarship Workshop, a FREE symposium and public scholarship training workshop, to be held on Friday, October 18th, 2024, at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
Morning panels will focus on four topics that are the subject of contemporary debates, and have profound effects on families: The fall of Roe vs. Wade, Anti-LGBTQ+ laws, Student Debt, and Immigration law. See our exciting line-up of speakers here!
Afternoon speakers will provide training on podcasting, creating short research videos, and writing academic blog posts, brief reports, and op-eds about family research. Workshop participants will then break into small groups, give 3-minute roundtable presentations (and will be listed on the program) and will write short family-related public scholarship pieces in small group workshops led by senior CCF scholars.
Fill out this simple application by August 31st to participate in the hands-on afternoon workshop. Your public scholarship piece should be tied to an in-progress or recently published research project that is related to families. Graduate students are welcome!
Whether or not you will attend the afternoon workshop, if you plan to attend the morning or afternoon event, please register here by August 31st.

If you are interested in learning what this certification entails and how to begin to working towards it, please attend this virtual information session on Wednesday, August 21, at 11:30 AM.
In addition receive information about an opportunity to get teaching experience with our
SEA CIRTL fellows program. This is a
COMPETITIVE opportunity, last year we got more than 130 applicants for nine spots.
As a SEA CIRTL Fellow, you’ll work with experienced faculty to design and implement a one-week course on a topic of your choice. Those who get selected get professional development to get the teaching certification, plus mentorship to create and teach their course during summer (Summer 2025) for middle schoolers or highschoolers and a stipend of $1,000 after they teach their class and get their certification.
Applications for the program open on August 30 and close on September 18, 2024.

Postdocs have two options for sharing their work at the Postdoc Research Symposium: in a poster session or a five-minute flash talk.
On this form, please indicate which format (either the poster presentation or flash talk) you would like to sign up for. Regardless of the format you choose, please submit an abstract summarizing the research you will be presenting at the Postdoc Research Symposium. Your abstract should be brief, clear, and concise. It should not exceed 300 words. If you have any questions, please reach out to Anne-Charlotte Mecklenburg at

The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs in the Graduate School at the University of Maryland is excited to host the 8th Annual Postdoctoral Research Symposium on Friday, September 27, as the culmination of our activities during National Postdoctoral Appreciation Month.
This year, for the first time, the symposium is a system-wide initiative, representing the collective efforts and collaborative spirit of the entire University System of Maryland (USM). This milestone event is made possible by the invaluable support of LaKeisha Harris, Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and Jennifer Aumiller, Director of the Office of Postdoctoral Scholars and Director of the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Career and Professional Development at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. We are also delighted to recognize the
RISE UPP Alliance, an NSF’s Eddie Bernice Johnson INCLUDES Initiative, for its outstanding efforts to diversify STEM faculty through postdoctoral pathways.
The symposium will feature a traditional poster presentation session and an exciting new addition: a Flash Talk session, providing a dynamic platform for postdocs to present their work and network with peers, faculty, and staff!

- To recognize and showcase the cutting-edge research conducted by postdocs at the University of Maryland.
- To provide opportunities for postdocs to develop their presentation skills through Flash Talk.

the websiteThe Dresher Center is pleased to announce our new director, Professor Amy Froide.
Amy M. Froide is Professor of History and the former Chair of the History Department at UMBC. Her areas of expertise include the history of early modern Britain, European women’s history, and financial history. She is the author of Silent Partners: Women as Public Investors during Britain’s Financial Revolution, 1690-1750 (Oxford University Press, 2016). Her other books include Never Married: Singlewomen in Early Modern England (Oxford University Press, 2005) and Singlewomen in the European Past, 1250-1800 (University of Pennsylvania Press, 1999), co-edited with Judith M. Bennett. She is currently working on a book about a financial scandal in eighteenth-century London as well as a project on wives who separated from their husbands in early modern Britain. She continues to study female entrepreneurs, including speculators in European mining projects. Her research has been funded by fellowships from the Folger Shakespeare Library, the Henry H. Huntington Library, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the British Academy.
Professor Froide has a long standing interest in interdisciplinary teaching and research. She is the founding Director of UMBC’s
Entrepreneurship & Innovation Minor and she holds affiliate appointments in UMBC’s Gender, Women’s + Sexuality Studies and Language, Literacy, and Culture Ph.D. programs. She regularly mentors Master’s degree students in both early modern British and European women’s history. Former students have gone on to Ph.D. programs in the U.S. and the U.K. and three are currently professors. In addition to her research and administrative work, Prof. Froide was the recipient of the 2018 Maryland Board of Regents’ Award for Teaching Excellence and is currently UMBC’s Presidential Teaching Professor for 2024-27. She regularly shares her Humanities research with a general audience through articles in The Conversation, podcasts, lectures with
Profs & Pints, and pre-show theatre talks.
Prof. Froide looks forward to continuing the excellent work of outgoing Director Jessica Berman who has made the Dresher Center a hub of scholarly exchange and intellectual community. In addition to supporting faculty and graduate student research in the Humanities, Prof. Froide plans to promote work in new interdisciplinary fields such as Environmental and Public Health humanities, more broadly share out the innovative Humanities research being done by UMBC’s faculty, and advocate for the significance of Humanities disciplines at Public Research Universities.

The UMBC Department of Education Research Seminar series kicks off the 2024-2025 academic year with a presentation by Professor Shannon Sauro. Her talk reports on the findings of a scoping review of research on fans of Korean popular media (e.g. K-pop, K-dramas) to explore what fan practices they engage in to learn Korean language and culture in the digital wilds.

CS3 Fall Faculty Writing Group

The writing group is an opportunity for faculty to be grouped with a few people from across disciplines UMBC to network and hold ourselves accountable to writing during the academic year. Groups will work together to identify a time to meet and set their own expectations.
The recommendation is to meet 1-2 hours per week, or every other week depending on the group's interest. Most groups do a check in and talk about their projects/week for about 15 minutes then spend the bulk of the time writing independently, then about 5 minutes to report out at the end.

Students Needed for LLMs Case Study
Goal: The purpose of this study is to evaluate how Large Language Models or LLMs (e.g. ChatGPT, Gemini) can impact through its answers asked by users, particularly how question framing can result into opinion shaping and polarized perception. For this research, we want to conduct a study in two stages; in stage one we want to generate queries for LLMs. The other stage will be to propose intervention to mitigate it. Since studies have found that polarization caused by human-AI interaction can have a negative impact on both an individual and societal level, it is very important to identify and resolve it specifically for AI based tools which are being used on daily basis. We want to propose intervention while interacting with LLMs to know if it helps mitigating the bias caused by LLM models while framing queries.
All eligible participants will receive $10 upon completion of the task. Please fill out the link to the form provided in you are interested in participating in the study. We will reach out to you personally with details for further action within 48 hours.
Task: Participant needs to form queries for a few controversial topics can be used as prompts for search engines or LLM-based chatbotsLocation: Remote
Time: Around 40 minutes
