UMBC Writing Center is HIRING PhD students

<Tagline>Graduate Peer Writing Consultants - September 4 deadline</Tagline>

Please see below a message from The UMBC Writing Center regarding recruitment of doctoral students to join the Graduate Peer Writing Consultants:

"The UMBC Writing Center continues to support writers on campus through a research-based, peer-to-peer model. Peer tutors, themselves students at UMBC, support the writing students do for courses and for fulfillment of their degree programs. We recognize that our center predominantly serves undergraduate writers, and we understand the many ways that these writers and their contexts differ substantially from those of graduate-level writers.

While some graduate writing support exists across programs at UMBC, more can be done to create an enduring network of mentorship through writing center programs. The writing centers at UMBC and the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) have designed a pilot program to share resources for supporting the professional development and writing expertise of UMBC graduate writers. We need your help getting the word out to the students

who might want to work with us.

We are hiring UMBC graduate students, specifically doctoral students, to serve as Graduate Peer Writing Consultants (GPWCs). These GPWCs will tutor graduate writers at both UMBC and UMB, including those planning, writing, and revising theses and dissertations. GWCPs will undertake ongoing, rigorous training virtually and in-person at the UMB Writing Center in downtown Baltimore to develop their expertise in the practice and tutoring of advanced disciplinary writing. We have designed the position to accomplish three main

professional aims:

Support the work writers do for courses and for fulfillment of degree requirements

Provide peer-to-peer mentorship that enhances UMBC graduate students’ understanding and practice of advanced disciplinary writing

Lay a research-based foundation for GPWCs to develop as future writing educators and mentors in the academy and beyond.

Compensation starts at $17/hour, and all training is paid at this rate. The application period lasts from August 1 until September 4.

Encourage students to learn more and apply at www.umaryland.edu/writing.

Students and you can reach out to James Wright, Associate Director of the UMB Writing Center, at james.wright@umaryland.edu with any questions.

Please share the attached flyer widely.

Thank you for your time and help.

Best,

Elaine MacDougall

UMBC Academic Success Center|Director, Writing Center"

Photo by Thom Milkovic on Unsplash

Dresher Center Fall 2024 Fellows

This semester, three fellows will join us in the Dresher Center.

Nicole King, Associate Professor in American Studies, will work on her upcoming book project, The Ungentrifiable City,
which traces the rise of urban renewal in the neoliberal city and
grounds research in the often-overlooked fight for community-led
development. The book explains how scholars can work with communities to
fight back and reclaim the public’s right to the city from private
    developers.

Michael Nance, Associate Professor in Philosophy, is working on the first English translation of the political writings of the important early left-Kantian philosopher Johann Benjamin Erhard. In his 1795 text On the Right of the People to a Revolution, Erhard develops a Kantian approach to human rights, which, together with his social theory of the structural causes of injustice, allows him to argue for a right to revolution under conditions of structural injustice.

Sasha Krongos, an M.A. candidate in Historical Studies, will be
researching popular printed material, including women’s magazines,
‘shelter’ magazines, and model home catalogs to examine their treatment
of women’s participation in home-building and home-design between the
    years 1890 and 1920.

Please join us in congratulating these fellows.

Today, the Center for Democracy and Civic Life will be hosting Dr. Jennifer Domagal-Goldman, Executive Director of the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge, who has graciously agreed to come to campus to help us engage UMBC’s community. During this session, which will be from 1 - 2 p.m. in our office (Commons 2B24), we will be talking about what we (staff, students, faculty) need to know when supporting students in getting registered for this election. This invitation originally went to the election working group, but we have some open spots! If you would like to attend, simply RSVP on myUMBC.
