The Prove It! Buzz
At this moment, somewhere in The Commons, the Prove It! selection committee is going through proposals, weighing their merits, and envisioning what the campus would be like if they were implemented. The proposals--13 of them--were submitted earlier this year by teams of students competing for a $30,000 implementation grant and $5,000 cash prize. Each proposal sets forth a vision and step-by-step plan for improving something about campus life. The selection committee's goal is to identify an outstanding group of finalists. The winner from among those finalists will be chosen through a student vote.
I sat in on the first few minutes of the committee's meeting, and it was thrilling to watch the group work. The members include campus leaders from the administration, faculty, staff and student body. Some of the students are SGA members (SGA conceived, developed and is sponsoring Prove It!); others not. One was selected at random from the entire undergraduate population. The spirit in the room is amazing: Everyone truly believes that UMBC students have the creativity, passion and entrepreneurial skills to pull these big projects off. The committee members are volunteering their time because they know this is a big deal: Prove It! is a groundbreaking way to say to an entire campus community, "We all create this place together." Other campuses have launched contests modeled after Prove It!, but UMBC's is the original.

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: Nine years.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: Facilitate undergraduate research programs and other work for the Office of Undergraduate Education.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: Helping students to find opportunities they didn't know about at UMBC. One of these is the chance to pursue independent research, scholarship, and creative work.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: Talk with your professors. Seek their advice about your future plans. Tell the professor (right away!) when you start to have a problem in a course.
Q: Complete this sentence: “I am a big fan of __________”
A: The classes designed for students in their first year at UMBC: First-Year Seminars (FYSs) and the Introduction to an Honors University courses (IHUs, the "Y" classes). Students who take any of these classes get so much information about making the most of their time at UMBC.
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: I love the Fireside Lounge. I am amazed by the number of paid summer research fellowships available for undergraduates, mostly in the sciences, but some for students in other fields. The Career Services Center and Shriver Center staff are fabulously helpful to students who bring in their resumes for review.

Egg Day
When you've lived long enough, there are specific moments that stand out in memory as the true turning points. Had those brief instances played out in a different way, you would have lived a completely different life, never having the experiences, meeting the people or traveling to the places that came to mean everything to you.
Sometimes those moments hinge on strokes of luck, for better or worse: the random encounter, the missed connection. More rarely (it seems to me), they involve someone else's intentionally grabbing the dice and changing your game.

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: 3 years.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: I make events happen with SEB, and am vice president of SEA.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: The part of my role here I enjoy most is being able to improve my home (UMBC) by changing our gym into a huge party three times or more a year with Comedy, Concerts and Quadmania. Also by building the trashmonster with trash from around campus.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: Here at college I learned you have to make all of your decisions for yourself. no one is here to tell you what is best for you or how to go about doing it. Which at times can be frustrating but its the kind of thing that really makes you grow.

A: Quadmania.
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: While working as an OPA (Orientation Peer Advisor) I heard from an old student that Erickson field didn't used to have that steep hills it has on three sides, but they were dug out to make way for some project that never went through. Also through the Goddard Earth Sciences Technology center I was able to take advantage of UMBC being second in the nation in funding from NASA.

Meron played a leading role in envisioning and producing this semester's Involvement Fest, which just concluded its successful three-day run on Main Street. Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: One year, five months.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: I learn and grow to share my experience with others.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I really enjoy the learning part. It's just really exciting when you learn something new or when you see something in a different light and you wonder if everyone sees it and that feeling that makes you wanna tell everyone about it and change the world is really amazing.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: To try new things, to never forget how amazing you are and how amazing others can be.
Q: Complete this sentence: “I am a big fan of __________”
A: People who write comics and screen writers of animation and cartoon movies (some how I always wonder how they have such a wonderful imagination?) and people who hike really high places (coz it really scares me).
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A:
- The Women Center : Something about it makes me feel like I'm at home .......and the naps I take there even if it is for 20 minutes between classes feel like heaven :)
- The pond by admissions office: Go there during summer around 7 or 8 pm ..... and just sit or lie on the side of the pond(make sure you don't fall though ...lol)....then tell me how it feels.
- The loop: sometimes I just get really tired, or annoyed and I just want to step out ..but can't go far because I have classes the next morning and I would just walk or run the loop when it's not too hot......somehow it revives me.
- The stadium: ....no one ever hangs out there....I don't know why.
- For such a small campus it's amazing how much UMBC has to offer and the cool thing is that there is always room for change - and more opportunities. I luv that about UMBC.

Hometown: Johnstown, Pennsylvania
Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: 1.5 years.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: I am a UMBC storyteller.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I love hearing students' stories and sharing their successes through writing, photography and videos.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: The most important thing I learned in college was how to communicate. When I say "communicate," I don't necessarily mean in the academic sense. Sure, I learned how to structure a story and how to give a presentation to a room. But more importantly, I learned how to communicate with people - how to listen to their stories, share some of my own and establish meaningful relationships with others. (I should note that I am still, and continuously, learning how to be a better communicator.)
I also learned the importance of friendship by surrounding myself with an insanely talented and beautiful group of people. My dad always said you are who you surround yourself with.

A: Lobsters. But not to eat. Just to look at and decorate with. And admittedly, it's more like an "obsession" than a "big fan."
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: Even though it gets crowded quickly, the RAC has become a second home for me (especially when it's too cold outside to run). One day a few months ago, I was running on the treadmill and noticed this girl staring at me. I figured it was my mismatched outfit or the food on my face (that I always feel is there for some reason - even if it's not). Instead she shouted across treadmill noise and pounding sneakers that I looked familiar. I told her she was probably thinking of someone else, that there was no way we knew each other. It turns out she was a student, had read my blog before and remembered my picture from the site. "Does your blog have something to do with lobsters?" she asked. I immediately starting laughing.
This is just one example of the many "small world" connections I've made at UMBC. I keep meeting people who know people that I know or know me; it's great! It was also my first blog sighting, so that was pretty cool :).
For two and a half years, I practiced law at a Los Angeles firm. I learned a lot, including what I do not want to do with my life.
But even after I left, I kept paying my Bar dues every year. Walking away from membership in the California Bar would have meant giving up my license to practice. It would have meant that if I ever wanted, or needed, to work as a lawyer again, I would have had wait many months and take the bar exam again. There was no way I wanted to do that. Paying the $100+ annual dues (for members on "inactive status") seemed like a reasonable hedge, even in years when the $100 was awfully hard to come by.
The latest bill sits on the table in front of me. For another $125, I can extend my membership into 2011. It seems ridiculous, a relic from another life in another world. I'm an educator now. I think it's going to stick.
And so I'm going to keep that $125, and say goodbye to the California Bar.
When I told Sharon that's the direction I was leaning, she said, "I like that. Letting go, moving on." She never even met the lawyer me.
I like it too. I said, "Shall I make that the title of a blog post?" She laughed and said, "Sure!"

Real People Profiles: Haley Martin
I’m asking some of the people you might encounter on the UMBC campus, including students, faculty and staff, to answer a few questions about themselves and their experiences. These are their responses.
Name: Haley Martin
Hometown: Fredericksburg PA
Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: Three and a half years.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: I am a singing, ice-breaking, serving, fundraising, greek-life-ing, over-achieving environmental science student.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I enjoy the challenges the most. I also enjoy the feeling of connectedness that comes with being involved with so many different things and helping others get involved.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: I think the most important think I've learned at UMBC is that sometimes you just need to suck it up and push yourself. Whether it be a really challenging class, an audition or meeting new people, the achievements you'll feel most proud of are the ones that you challenged yourself and overcame huge obstacles (or what seemed like huge obstacles to you) to succeed.
Q: Complete this sentence: “I am a big fan of __________”
A: Food Network. I can watch it all day and I love recreating the dishes in my own kitchen. I also am a big fan of mud, music of any variety and being goofy with friends late at night.
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: Favorite spots: I love walking the trails in CERA, especially early on Saturday morning when everything is quiet. I don't spend a lot of time in the library, but those big comfy chairs are my favorite for studying and sleeping.
Little-known facts about UMBC: The people in The Commons are going to hate me for this, but The Commons are the best place on campus to play sardines. Get a group of friends together, have one person hide and then everyone else has to find them. The catch is, once you find the person, you have to hide with them, so eventually everyone is crammed into the hiding space. It's a really fun way to get to know where everything is in The Commons (and the rest of the campus).
Things you should do: Go to a show at the UMBC theater. They do some really interesting things and its neat to see how talented that kid who lives down the hall from you is. Also, check out an a capella concert because they're lots of fun. Everyone should go to at least one of the cultural events on campus too. There's usually some great food and its really interesting to learn about the cultures of other UMBC students.
