The Capsule Cometh

For nearly thirty years they sat untouched in the attic of my parents' house in California: a collection of sealed cardboard boxes held together with masking tape. Hidden inside were the materials a 12-year old boy had decided to send forward through time.

This was the second of my time capsules, sealed on July 12, 1980. I remember nothing about the contents other than that in the months after I sealed my first capsule (on March 5, 1980, to be opened on March 5, 2000), I had given more thought to what a person from the distant future might find interesting. And I had decided to be more ambitious and patient than I had been with the first capsule: instead of a 20-year wait, I left instructions (taped to the cover of one of the boxes) that this capsule should be opened 30 years hence, on July 12, 2010. I know I hoped that I would be the one to open the capsule, but it was a real challenge to imagine that I might one day be so old, or that the capsule would not be lost at some point on its temporal journey.

A few weeks ago I asked my parents to send me the capsule. My mother put the whole thing in one big box, and took it to a FedEx office today. 26 pounds of my distant past are on their way to Baltimore, in plenty of time for the July unveiling.

So what do I hope to find? I can think of some things that I might have gotten my hands on as a 12-year old that would have appreciated significantly in value over 30 years. But (unrealistic as it is to expect) I think I'd like nothing more than to find 26 pounds of handwritten pages--messages from family and friends, and my own impressions of my life and speculation about the years ahead.

UMBC Alternative School Break Trip Story in Carroll...

Full Title: UMBC Alternative School Break Trip Story in Carroll County Times

70 students spent at least part of last week immersing themselves in service, social action and hands-on learning on UMBC’s Alternative School Break trips. There were six trips in all: to assist seriously ill children at Camp Boggy Creek in Eustis, Florida; to support Patch Adams’ mission to transform medicine through love and fun, at the Gesundheit Institute in Hillsboro, West Virginia; and to explore environmental sustainability, and the experiences of people who have become homeless, refugee immigrants, and people with developmental disabilities in and around Baltimore. From what I’ve heard from some of the participants, their investments of time paid off in lifelong memories and new perspectives.

The Carroll County Times published a front-page story and photo about one of the trips. Here's a link to the story.
Wolff

Hometown: Baltimore, MD

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A: Over 20 years! I started in 1988, as a full-time graduate student in Sociology. During my graduate studies, I worked part-time in the Office of Institutional Research and just after graduation, I was fortunate to be hired as the first Coordinator of Internships & Service-Learning at what was then called the Office of Professional Practice (later called The Center for Learning Through Work & Service, and ultimately named The Shriver Center).

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?

A: Facilitating creation of opportunities for outreach of university resources to our community.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: I love being able to work with an incredibly diverse group of students and the number of hats you can wear while working: teacher, student, mentor, mentee, and most importantly, difference-maker.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: Having the opportunity every day to interact with and learn from some pretty inspiring people. The students, staff, and faculty who I get to work with are so committed to creating positive change for themselves and others, ultimately to the benefit our community (whether local, regional, national, or global).

Q: Complete this sentence: “I am a big fan of __________”

A: Spending as much time as possible with family and friends.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: Just after I started working here, our office was located in a temporary building on the land where the Physics Building now stands. In actuality, the building was constructed from two double-wide trailers--they tried to make them as comfortable as possible, but from the terrible ventilation and moldy smells, to the unbearably noisy wall units we had for heat and air, you could tell you were in converted trailers! Needless to say, the buildings on campus have come a long way!.

Take This Class, Change the World

I believe many things are best learned through experience, including how to change the world. You can’t fully explore and develop your ability to make a difference without actually giving it a try. I also believe that taking meaningful action with others to shape your community is one of the most important and fulfilling things you can do. But I’m not a fan of futile gestures--of fighting the “good fight” in some blundering way that doesn’t result in a win. I think if you’re going to invest time in trying to change the world, you should do it in a manner well calculated to produce the change you seek. That means being an entrepreneur: thinking clearly and analytically about problems, developing innovative solutions, making solid strategic plans, building helpful relationships, assembling and managing resources, inspiring supporters and sustaining their motivation.

If you agree with me, or are interested in discussing these points, I hope you’ll consider taking the class I’ll be teaching with Delana Gregg in fall 2010: Civic Imagination and Social Entrepreneurship (cross-listed as Political Science 209, American Studies 280, and Sociology 298). The class will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 to 12:45.

Students in the class will read, think and talk about ideas and examples relating to the process of social change. They’ll also work in groups to choose a social problem or opportunity and launch a practical project to create change on campus or, through the campus, in the wider community. The plan for the project will be the major piece of academic work produced for the class. Implementation will be up to you: If you’re inspired, hopefully you’ll decide to follow through even after you complete the course in December.

Projects developed by students in this class in fall 2008 and fall 2009 have included creating a basketball league for homeless men in Baltimore (implemented summer 2009), blanketing the UMBC campus with black and gold banners to build school spirit (to be completed in the next few months), setting up new applied research opportunities for UMBC undergraduates (one of this year’s Prove It! finalists), launching a human rights awareness campaign focusing initially on hunger and access to clean water (you’ll see this unfold starting next month), developing new health and wellness resources for UMBC students, setting up a community action program for middle-school students, and establishing a healthy food co-op on campus.

Just like in previous semesters, we plan to engage some exciting guest instructors to help students build their skills and hone their ideas. Last fall’s lineup included Provost Elliot Hirshman, Vice President for Student Affairs Nancy Young, Vice President for Institutional Advancement Greg Simmons, SGA President Yasmin Karimian, Shriver Center Director Michele Wolff, and faculty members Kriste Lindenmeyer, Ed Orser and Lee Boot.

If you have questions about the class, feel free to email me at dhoffman@umbc.edu. Hope to see you next fall!

A: I love being able to work with an incredibly diverse group of students and the number of hats you can wear while working: teacher, student, mentor, mentee, and most importantly, difference-maker.
