Life on an Unfinished Campus

I had some time to think last week, as I crossed the campus from a distant parking lot to my office in The Commons and then back again at each day’s end. After seven years, the lot across from the Commons Garage was no longer available to me, every space occupied by the time I arrived a little before 9:00 each morning. The change was unsettling and unwelcome, a disruption of my routines and expectations.

A few weeks ago the big news on campus was that we were once again named the #1 Up-and-Coming university in the United States. The phrase “up-and-coming” is appropriately kinetic: It hints at both progress and instability, at sketches and erasures; at flux. Last week there was the flux of thousands of new students, the campus alive with voices after a quiet summer. New black and gold banners lined the walkways, the completion of a creative community project two years in the making. At Involvement Fest, many hundreds of students endured the heat of the day to reach out, make connections, and pull each other into the life of this place. At Patapsco Hall there was a ceremonial groundbreaking for a new building, and the promise of more beds, a more residential campus, and pickup basketball games to be played on new courts in the years ahead.

At the groundbreaking, Resident Student Association President Carl Grun described having worked with other members of the UMBC community to envision and plan the new facilities. He spoke of the opportunities students have to make their mark on this campus: to enter a history still being lived, and make contributions that matter. It was inspiring to hear him name one of the things I appreciate most about this place: It is self-consciously becoming what it will one day be, and is not yet complete, and the flux itself is an invitation to join and create and become.

But the construction and the messiness of growing do take a toll, as anyone who waited in a line of cars just to reach Hilltop Circle discovered last week. I was relatively fortunate—I experienced the full lots but not the traffic—but I was surprised at how disorienting it was to walk in from the outskirts each day instead of parking in my old familiar territory. I found myself fighting the irrational feeling that I might not be quite as welcome or included in this fresh version of UMBC. I can understand how other members of our community might be feeling that way. Here’s hoping that in week two and beyond, the felt experience of the campus is of excitement at boundless opportunities to make history and create community, and that our growing pains subside.

Hometown: Laurel, MD

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A: One year.

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A: I am the SGA Treasurer, and a Resident Assistant for Harbor Hall

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?

A: Encourage, motivate, and serve as an advocate for other students on campus.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: Being a part of the SGA allows me to work with a diverse group of individuals that are passionate about creating change at UMBC. I enjoy reflecting on the lessons I’ve learned, and challenges I have faced with this group. The weekly Finance Board Meetings have been some of the longest meetings I've been a part of, but also the ones that I've left with the most insight. The SGA has given me the opportunity to meet with various student organizations on campus, and for that I’m truly grateful. It’s wonderful knowing that you attend an institution where everyone is so motivated and compassionate.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: The Sondheim Public Affairs Program has shown me that the best way to learn is through experience. While at UMBC I have volunteered at an afterschool program through the Shriver Center, and working with the children has taught me many valuable lessons. It has taught me the importance of patience, determination, and compassion. I’ve learned that in order to try to create positive change you must be willing to place yourself outside of your comfort zone, and understand the difficulties that the people you are trying to help face. UMBC has definitely shown me that in order to make the most out of your college experience you shouldn’t be afraid to jump in, and try to find something you are really passionate about.

Q: Complete this sentence: “I am a big fan of __________”

A: Traveling and trying to immerse myself with other cultures. Stepping outside of my comfort zone and challenging myself to try what may seem to be impossible. I’m a big fan of the arts, reading, and music. My favorite show is “Glee”. I love music and how it can unite people from all over the world. It’s truly a powerful way to express one’s self.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: The lounge on the third floor of the Commons is a great place to study, or just relax. Not that many people are in there, and the environment is really warm and welcoming. It’s definitely a great place to checkout.

I want to encourage everyone to take advantage of the events that take place on campus. It’s a great feeling when you’ve been to an event that’s lifted your spirits, and has earned a place on your list of unforgettable memories at UMBC. Don’t be afraid to think of something out of the ordinary, and when you do make sure you come to the SGA Finance Board.

Coming to UMBC, Without Fear

True story: At my summer orientation before I started college, I walked up to the student government table at the involvement fair and asked, “How do I become Student Body President three years from now?” I didn’t do it because I was feeling cocky. I did it because I was scared. I felt lost among the masses of students all around me and intimidated by the scale of the campus. That morning I had read an article in the student newspaper about how the Student Body President had sustained minor injuries in a car accident, and it astonished me to think that on a campus full of people, one student could be so important that she merited front-page coverage.

I wanted to be that person, to be visible above the crowd. But behind that wish, coming from a place so deep within me that my conscious mind had not yet recognized it, was a yearning to be seen and embraced for exactly who I was. I wanted to belong, to be loved, and to have the chance to participate in my new campus community wholeheartedly and without fear. “How do I become Student Body President three years from now?” was my way of asking, “How do I make it OK to be me, here?”

Over the years becoming comfortable in new communities has become a lot easier for me. But even with the wisdom and patience that come from experience, it remains a little scary. Mostly what has changed is that I’ve learned to feel OK about risking rejection by being and expressing my authentic self. The occasional rejection I risk is more than counterbalanced by the joy of making real connections.

What I love most about the UMBC community is that we thrive on the unique contributions of our diverse members, and we know it. We celebrate it! Our quirkiness is our strength, and our diversity helps to liberate and empower each one of us, in part by giving us permission to be ourselves.

So welcome to UMBC, all of you new freshmen and transfer students! Please dare to contribute your own stories and dreams. UMBC is stronger because you are here, and now that we are all here together, it’s time for our adventure to begin.

P.S.--If this is the first time you’ve read a Co-Create UMBC post, welcome! My name is David Hoffman, and I work in UMBC’s Office of Student Life. Among other things I am SGA’s staff advisor, teach a class on social change, advise the First Year Council (more on that later), and generally help students find ways to make a difference on campus and beyond. I write this Co-Create UMBC blog to help point the way to opportunities for all of us to “make UMBC ours.” Feel free to join the new Co-Create UMBC group through MyUMBC, check out old posts at www.cocreateumbc.blogspot.com., and get in touch with me any time (dhoffman@umbc.edu, or visit me in Commons 2B12).
