Name: Andrea L. Kalfoglou, Ph.D.

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: Just over 3 years.
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A:Assistant Professor, Faculty Advisor to the Bioethics Student Association.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: I teach undergraduate public health courses and conduct research on reproductive ethics.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: Motivating smart students to see the kind of impact they can make on the world by investing in careers in public health.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: Integrity matters more than grades.
Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"
A: Being creative with my hands - quilting, jewelry making, scrapbooking.
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: I think UMBC is one year older than I am.
In college I spent a single summer day at a children’s camp affiliated with my university. As with everyone at the camp, I left my given name behind at the front entrance. For the duration of my brief stay, I assumed a new name: “Winter.”
The beauty of being Winter in that place was that I got to choose what being Winter meant. Unlike in everyday life, I felt no pressure to live up or down to other people’s expectations of me. I was neither confused nor constrained by the reflections of my past in others’ eyes. As Winter I felt free to be truly me. It was a lesson I brought back to the “real” world at the end of the day, along with the wooden name badge I have never thrown away.
I wish I could remember whether I chose the name Winter or it was given to me by the people who ran the camp. Either way, it suits me. Winter is dark and deep. It is the season of cold days and warm hearths, of contemplation and the renewal of acquaintances. It is a time to look back before leaping forward anew. And so Winter is one of my real names. Real People Profiles: Stevo Karolenko
I’m asking some of the people you might encounter on the UMBC campus, including students, faculty, staff and alumni, to answer a few questions about themselves and their experiences. These are their responses.
Name: Stevo Karolenko
Hometown: Finksburg, MD
Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: I am currently a junior.
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A:I am a designer for both the Student Events Board and Commonvision.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: I design posters and act ridiculous in front of crowds.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: This semester I've had the honor of MC-ing all of the Open Mic nights, Karaoke nights, and the Homecoming Talent Show (among other random things) which I really love doing. It's pretty much just me pretending to be a comedian for a couple hours each week, but I get to hang out with some really talented kids.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: It took me a while to reconcile, but I've found out you can't make a change in this world with just witty comments and timely punchlines. You've got to be willing to put in the hours and brain juice to really make an impact on your environment.
Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"
A: Back flips. I know it's getting pretty cliché, but there's something magical about back flips. It's like you're an astronaut swimming through hyperspace towards the sunrise for a brief moment.
Also, cake. I freakin love cake.
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: Before I came to UMBC, my high school, middle school, and even elementary school all had dress codes. So when I started here, it was a small culture-shock getting used to not putting on a tie and slacks every morning. It's funny though, I'd been dressing up for school for so many years I still feel like I learn better in the tie. Three years out, you can still find me wearing a tie and button-up shirt whenever I have a test.An undergraduate position has opened up on the UMBC Student Activity Fee Review Board (SAFRB). The Student Activity Fee paid to UMBC by every undergraduate funds student organization events and operations, the Student Events Board, SGA and The Retriever Weekly. SGA decides how to allocate the fee, and SAFRB, which consists of both students and non-students, provides oversight for this process. SAFRB members' role is to ask good questions, make helpful suggestions and provide guidance to student leaders as they make decisions about the budget.
SAFRB meets roughly five times between February and April each year. You'll find additional information the application form, which is available here. Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A: Coordinator of Student Organizations and Involvement.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: Helping students to get involved and create their own experiences.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: Building strong relationships with students and staff.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: Outside of the classroom experiences & involvement are just as valuable as inside the classroom.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: One of my favorite things to do on campus is jogging the loop. 
If you are a Graduate Student at UMBC, and if you are working on your graduate school courses, proposal, or dissertation, then this event is for you!
The on-campus setting provides Dissertation House participants with productive and rewarding scholastic engagement. Students who participate in this program will spend each day thinking, writing, and sharing ideas about their doctoral dissertations. Students will learn effective time-management skills; learn how to set small manageable goals, and will meet with a dissertation coach in one-on-one consultations to discuss and address obstacles that might prevent them completing their degrees.
This is a weekday (9 a.m. – 5 p.m., non-residential) commitment set for the week of Tuesday, January 18 – Friday, January 21, 2011.

Real People Profiles: Carrie (Mann) Miller
I’m asking some of the people you might encounter on the UMBC campus, including students, faculty, staff and alumni, to answer a few questions about themselves and their experiences. These are their responses.
Name: Carrie (Mann) Miller
Hometown: Richmond, VA
Q: When did you attend UMBC?
A: 2003-2007.
Q:What are you doing now?
A: I am a Residential Life Coordinator at Ohio Wesleyan University outside of Columbus, OH. I oversee an all women's hall and nine theme houses, which we call Small Living Units (SLUs). I wear a lot of hats. On any given day I could be helping a student plan a house project, bring a speaker to campus, mediating a roommate conflict, making sure a broken heater gets fixed or meeting with one of my staff members.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: I worked to make SGA more accessible to students.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) did/do you enjoy most?
A: I loved the feeling of possibility that SGA meetings and the energy in the Student Orgs held. The fact that we could discuss an idea in an SGA meeting and then bring that idea into being was incredible. I felt like nothing was impossible and more often than not nothing was. My time in SGA taught me to look for possibility not obstacles.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college?
A: It isn’t always where you are going but how you get there that matters. I am a planner, but after graduating I wasn’t sure what my plan was. The funny thing is that when I started thinking about the things I enjoyed or learned the most from, they have almost never been in my “plan”. If you focus too much on your destination you miss all the wonderful things along the way.

A: Libraries! I love everything about libraries; it is an amazing feeling to have so much knowledge at your fingertips!
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: I have lots of UMBC stories, but I think my favorite memory from my time at UMBC was the 40th Anniversary fireworks, which I watched from the roof of the Commons. I can’t disclose how I got up there, but it felt the perfect beginning of the end of my time at UMBC. I had given a Convocation speech that September welcoming the new students home, I had been inspired to write the speech by a number of different things that happened while I was a student but perhaps the foundation of the speech came from the feeling of home I always felt at the end of a long day when I would walk from my office in the student orgs space back to my Walker Ave apartment. I always felt like the campus was mine and mine alone when I would walk up the hill at sunset or after dark, I would almost always stop at the top of the hill before going into my apartment to look at the campus for a few seconds. The feeling I had in those few seconds everyday was in large part why I wrote that speech, which in all likelihood few students would remember now, but the idea of home grew into not just a welcome to our campus, but a reminder that success is self defined, that our value is not determined by our GPAs or titles on campus. For me being at home at UMBC was about being authentic and idea that grew out of my few seconds at the top of the hill everyday.
