Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: I enjoy the planing of events for my organization. this includes all the financial work as well as the advertisement.  I also enjoy tutoring kids as well as some students on campus. 

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: Perception is not always reality. You have to work towards a goal with one mind to get the desired outcome with the aid of Professors around.

Hometown: I was born in San Luis Potosí, Mexico.  I also feel a home connection to Vero Beach, FL; New Orleans, LA; Boston, MA; Madison, WI; and now - Baltimore (and no, I did not grow up in the military).

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A: One year

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A: Staff Psychologist and Outreach Coordinator at University Counseling Services (UCS).

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus? 

A: Answer 1: I facilitate well-being.  Answer 2: I help make lemonade when life has given you lemons

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: I love that I get to have meaningful conversations with students every day.  There is tremendous power in being able to tell one’s story (one of the many things I love about the process of counseling).  I love being in a position to help students tell their personal stories in a manner that confers dignity and helps students learn how to become the person they hope to become.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: “Behold the turtle. It only makes progress when it sticks its neck out.”

A:  Hobbies. I love ‘em – and I love starting new hobbies. Currently I’m really into roasting my own coffee, duckpin bowling, and running. I think the next hobby I’ll pick up is going to be learning how to make a podcast. Someday I think it would be neat to explore creative with ways to promote well-being and mental health in downloadable/audio format. If anyone has ideas for how to learn this, I’m all ears.

A: I become involved with extracurriculars and help others do the same.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: Sorority pledge. Greek Life is really great at UMBC.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: Leadership is a big part of who I am, and who I can be. The STRiVE program taught me that, and I will never forget that.

Below is a list of the students who submitted applications to run for SGA positions in next month's election.  This list is preliminary.  It is subject to verification by the Election Board and candidate eligibility checks, so it is possible that the ballot may not include all of these names or could include others not listed here.

Candidates who do not have listed opponents are not automatically considered elected.  Write-in votes are permitted in SGA elections.  Also, to be elected candidates must receive votes on at least 5% of all ballots cast.

The election will take place through MyUMBC from Monday, April 18th at 12:00:01 a.m. through Wednesday, April 20th at 11:59:59 p.m.

A: this is my fourth semester here at UMBC!!

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A: Chair of the Leadership Consultants, Assistant News Editor for The Retriever Weekly, Assistant Director of the Office of Academic Affairs for SGA

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus? 

A: Academic and leadership advocate for students and a conservative voice in ink

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: I really enjoy most by role with The Retriever Weekly (disclaimer: this was an extremely hard decision to come to...I love working with the LCs and SGA!!). I'm the Assistant News Editor, and as such, I get to edit articles submitted to the News section by our writers; and I also write weekly for the Opinion section, as the regular contributor to the sections Point/Counter-point (written with the amazing Ryanne Milani). I enjoy writing the most because it's so much fun to argue civilly -it really says something about a friendship when you can disagree completely on many topics, and yet still have lunch and enjoy each others company! That, and arguing and encouraging students and people in general to consider a different point of view is fun!

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: If you don't know how to say "no," learn to -it's certainly hard to say it, and you may want to do it all, but there really isn't enough time in one week to be a full-time student and do everything you may want to do!

A: Sleep!!!!! And taking time to relax. Everyone is always so busy studying and doing so much, and when it comes down to it, sleep and relaxing are often sacrificed. To be honest, I sleep. Lots. And I try to do something fun or relaxing each night -like watching a movie before going to bed or playing Angry Birds!

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: My favorite spot by far is the Fireside Lounge!! My friend Nayaba Bawa showed Fireside Lounge to me last semester, and I couldn't believe I didn't know it existed! It's easily my favorite place to study -it's so relaxing and it's got a beautiful view, and the chairs are pretty comfy too.

Name: Rebekah Porter

Hometown: Ellicott City, MD - childhood/Baltimore (Federal Hill) - present.

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?

A: Recruit new students, read their applications, orient them to campus, repeat.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: I love working with our Orientation Peer Advisors (OPAs) and seeing them grow as leaders and as individuals through this role.  As an undergrad, my own OPA experience was transformational and first made me think about working at a college after graduation.  It’s great seeing that happen in others.  Also, they make me laugh.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: My best experiences in college, and in life, are those that made me the most nervous/uncomfortable in the beginning. Trying out for a team, leaving for a semester abroad, introducing myself to a stranger, taking on a project that I wasn’t sure I could handle…  If an idea both excites you and kind of makes you want to throw up a little, it’s probably worth doing.

A: Living in Baltimore.  I love being within walking distance of the stadiums, great restaurants, the Harbor, my running group, and, perhaps most importantly, Sam’s Bagels.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: My first season “on the road” as an Admissions Counselor will always be memorable.  Admissions Counselors travel for about three months straight in the fall, visiting hundreds of high schools and standing behind tables at countless college fairs.  While every day is an adventure, there’s some that you never forget.  For example, on a late Friday afternoon during my rookie year, I drove to the State’s car pool at College Park for the purpose of switching out my malfunctioning Ford Taurus (and the numerous boxes of UMBC paraphernalia inside) to a new Ford Taurus.  When I went to drive away, I discovered that the 8ft. fence to the outside world was locked!  Apparently the car pool employees had forgotten about me and left for the weekend.  Long story short, UMCP’s campus police were unsuccessful in their attempts to unlock the gate and I was forced to scale the fence in my suit and heels!  The officers then put me in the back of their police cruiser and took me the station, where I had to call my mom to come pick me up.  Not exactly my most glamorous moment at UMBC, but a good story for our new counselors every year.

Everyone has had them: moments when things have gone wrong partly because of our own lack of experience or perspective.  In this new series of posts, I'm asking members of the UMBC community to reflect on their own 'super human moments.'

Name: Jen Dress

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A: Assistant Director Extraordinaire, Office of Student Life

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?

A: I work with amazing students to make magic happen!

Q: What title would you give your Super Human Moment?

A: The first person I ever fired.

Q: What happened?

A: When I was in graduate school, I supervised a very high functioning RA staff.  I was a new professional and really came in with a ton of energy and connected with my staff pretty quickly.  Through those connections, I found out some information that ultimately led to dismissing one of my employees.  I remember struggling to come up with the perfect thing  to say "as the boss" and I remember how impersonal it all felt.  I felt like there had to be this very tangible gap between the personal and professional.  I took a moment that should have been from a place of care and learning and made it very much about the rules.  I like rules, they give us structure and a covenant to exist together, but this was a moment that was about the rules and so much more and I missed it.  In some way I was protecting myself from the difficulty in all of it by doing what was procedurally the proper thing to do.  I believe firmly that we don't so students or ourselves any good by not holding a standard of accountability, but I love my work because it's about learning from mistakes, and successes, and carving a path from there.  

Q: How have you applied what you learned?

A: I think I have learned how important it is to both be prepared, but also be present.  I like having a playbook and to make a football reference, being able to call an audible is crucial.  I can't give students a prescribed playbook or set of rules for every situation that life throws at them, but I like to think that I have helped provide some opportunities to get to know themselves and to know that meeting people where they are at in a moment is crucial.  It is often a struggle for me to balance the tasky "to do" with the life in front of me "to do."  I am still learning.

Q: Do you have any advice you can pass along to others?

A: Be here now.  I think knowing that you are who you are and that comes out in all the roles in your life is really important. We all have to play different roles at different moments in our lives, but knowing who we are and how those roles impact us is very important.

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A: Sophomore

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A: President of UMBC Vegetarians, Leadership Consultant, Asst. Director of Service, Volunteerism, and Awareness, Co-Founder of Baltimore VegFest, Through the Eyes of a Refugee (TEAR) Trip Leader, and more.

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus? 

A: A friend, activist, nerd, clubber, motivator, and advocate for a healthy lifestyle.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: Meeting new people! I love networking. I love exploring different cultures and ideas that are foreign to me.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: As independent, mature, and dedicated as I am, I’m still a kid.

A: Competence, independent people, passion to a cause, and tofu, among other things.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: I take a yoga class with Joe at The RAC on Tuesdays. I couldn’t do it the past two semesters, but I really love it. I believe he’s a teacher in engineering, but he’s really quirky and fun as a yoga instructor! I’m taking it again this semester.

One of my favorite spots on campus is the open balcony on the second floor (I think) of the Chemistry building. During the summer, at night, it’s really beautiful from up there.
