Name: Daniel Biedzynski

Hometown: Well, I lived in Riverdale down in PG County until 3rd grade, when we moved to Catonsville.

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A: About 4 years- I started in Fall 2007.

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A: I am an Office Assistant in the Office of Student Life, an Involvement Peer in the Student Involvement Center, and the Treasurer for Campus Crusade for Christ.

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus? 

A: I help people learn about student life. Or regular life. Whichever.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: The social aspect. I love people, and everything I do on campus brings into contact with more people. Whether I'm meeting SGA people in the SIC, getting to know the OSL staff, or meeting people at Cru everything I do at UMBC helps me build relationships with the people I work with.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: Rely on the Lord. I have learned that the stresses and problems of life are too much for me to handle on my own. It is a hard lesson to learn, but I have found that I can only get through it all by casting my cares on Him and letting Him guide my life.

A:  Jesus. And Batman.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: So in high school, my dad got me into reading old science fiction books from the 70s, and my sophomore year I come to find out that UMBC Special Collections (in the Library) specializes in two things: photography and science fiction. So there is a collection of novels, manuscripts, and other works of science fiction authors in the UMBC Library! I thought that was pretty cool.

Name: Hannah Kurlansky

Hometown: Bethesda, MD

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A: This is my fourth semester.

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A: Secretary for the English Council of Majors and Minors (which is open to anyone with an interest in English, regardless of major), Bartleby fiction staff member, Oxfam member, and recently an SGA Student Advocate.

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus? 

A: I learn from others and try to interact meaningfully in our community.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: I love being able to contribute to something much larger than myself.  When students come together with a common interest or goal, there is an unlimited potential to make a real difference.  I can’t help but be constantly amazed and inspired by those I get to interact with.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: During my freshman year I didn’t really try to get involved on campus.  I was overwhelmed by the transition and focused mainly on schoolwork and making new friends.  I wanted to get involved but I didn’t know what to do.  As soon as sophomore year started I knew I wanted to change.  I was initially intimidated by all the people who seemed to know exactly what they were doing, but I challenged myself step outside my comfort zone and try new things.  Once I made this decision, it was easy.  Everyone was friendly and helpful, and I’m still finding new opportunities that interest me.  I’m glad I got past my unfounded intimidation. It’s so easy to get involved if you only try.

A:  Soap operas - especially General Hospital.  I take a lot of heat for watching this show, but I don't care.  I love how cheesy it is, and how overly dramatic and ridiculous the plot and actors are. 

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: I really like Pura Vida and the library atrium.  It's nice that there's a place to get coffee when Starbucks closes on the weekends and I'm too lazy to go to the dining hall.

Everyone has had them: moments when things have gone wrong partly because of our own lack of experience or perspective.  In this new series of posts, I'm asking members of the UMBC community to reflect on their own 'super human moments.'

Name: Haley Martin

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A: Conduct Officer, Student Judicial Programs

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?

A: Grad Student, Mentor, Enforcer.

Q: What title would you give your Super Human Moment?

A: Learning my Limits

Q: What happened?

A: Most of the Super Human moments have been about reaching and exceeding limits that we put on ourselves.  Mine happens to be about finding my limit.

Last spring, after a disappointing round of grad school applications, I decided to stay at UMBC to earn my Master’s Degree.  I was feeling just a bit like I had settled but I figured that I’d find a way to make the best of it.  Life has a funny way of knocking us on our butts when we think that’s where we already were.  Instead of celebrating my graduation despite my dim perspective on what my years of grad school would be like, I was thrown into chaos when my father was killed in a car accident the day after graduation. 

Needless to say, the first semester of grad school was rough.  I went from being a super involved undergrad to a grad student who could barely muster the physical and mental energy required to pay attention in class, be productive at work or complete my homework.  I spent most of the semester locked in my room, ignoring roommates, friends and work just trying to figure out how to get out of bed the next day. 

I struggled through the first half of the semester trying to balance a job, classes, homework and grieving before I realized that this was clearly not working.  I don’t know quite what snapped, but I came to the realization that I couldn’t do it all, nor could I do it alone. At this point, I made a choice to cut some things out of my schedule (or at least choosing to be ok with other people cutting me out of those things).  It was far too late to drop classes, so I struggled through them, trying to balance the over-achiever in me with the need for some quiet time to process things.  I started sharing some of my emotional burdens with others and tried to reconnect with the people I had been avoiding throughout the semester. 

I managed to survive the first semester, somehow, and I’ve never been happier about my decision to stay at UMBC.  If it hadn’t been for the connections I established as an undergrad and rebuilt as a grad student, I doubt that I would have made it through some of the toughest months of my life.

Q: How have you applied what you learned?

A: I’m happy to say that this semester is going much better than last. I’ve definitely accepted what I can and cannot handle at this point in my life.  I’ve taken on fewer credits, fewer projects and fewer hours at work.  One of my New Year’s resolutions is to overcome the anxiety I felt last semester and force myself to hang out with a friend at least once a week.  No homework, no studying, just hanging out, rebuilding a friendship that I had neglected.  I still struggle with being vulnerable around them, but I’m challenging myself to talk about my experiences both for my sake and potentially for others.

Q: Do you have any advice you can pass along to others?

A: Don’t be afraid to say no and spend some time taking care of yourself (say no, relax over a cup of tea, run a billion miles, whatever it takes).  Your health, both mental and physical, is more important than doing it all.


Lean on those who love you.  Your friends and family care about you and hate seeing you suffer alone.  They are willing to give you their support, so take it.  Don’t be afraid to ask for help. 

Accept your limits, but don’t become complacent with them.  Just because I had to turn down some opportunities over the last few months in order to preserve my well-being, that doesn’t mean that there is never going to be a time challenging myself and pushing my limits won’t yield wonderful things.

A: I love working with the student population here. They truly are uniquely wonderful and have a lot to offer the world. I learn from them everyday!

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A: Vice President of the Hispanic Latino Student Union (HLSU), Meyerhoff Scholar, MARC U*STAR Trainee

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus? 

A: Help oversee HLSU and do research

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: I like the amount of people I have been able to meet through HLSU and my major. I feel like UMBC is small enough that everyone is connected in one way or another!

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: I think it’s really important to get involved with the things you are most interested and passionate about. UMBC offers a wide variety of groups and organizations that can cater to this, and if they don’t have what you’re looking for—you can start it!

A:  Fashion and music!

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: UMBC has a lot of nice relaxing spots like the rock garden or even the physics building balcony.  My favorite is the lake behind the Research and Technology Park. It’s really beautiful in the fall, and a great place to sit, read, and just think.

Also, the dining hall is GREAT for lunch!

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A: This is my fourth semester!

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A: Susquehanna Desk Staffer for Residential Life, Event Programmer for SEB, Undergraduate Researcher

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus? 

A: I am someone who people feel comfortable coming to for information about anything on campus!

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: I love that I am able to be a friendly face that people recognize and that I am able to interact with so many different people on a daily basis! Everyone knows me from work at the desk so its great to get so many friendly smiles and hellos while walking around campus. Now people are starting to know me from SEB too so I get questions about events while I'm at the desk! My jobs make it so easy to get to know such a diverse group of people on campus and I love it!

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: You have to take advantage of every opportunity you are offered here. Always put yourself out there and never underestimate what you are capable of doing! Sometimes, on my most overwhelming days of the week, I think maybe I have committed myself to too many things, however I love everything I do. On campus there are so many opportunities to find your niche and I feel like I've found quite a few for myself: desk staff, SEB, research, and most recently Phi Sigma Sigma :)

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: I never used to study at the library, but recently I have discovered that the first floor of the library is hoppin!!! Seriously, sometimes its a recipe for unproductiveness, BUT there is always someone to say hi to! So eventually when you realize you actually need to crack open the backpack you know there is always someone to take a study break and talk to and theres almost always someone to study with! Its the best!

UMBC sophomore Collin Wojciechowski (Real People Profile here) is going to be taking on some huge responsibilities in the coming year.  In a state university system with 13 institutions, 168,000 students and an operating budget of over $4 billion, he's going to be the one student with a voice and a vote on the official governing board.  Collin has been appointed by Governor O’Malley to be the University System of Maryland's Student Regent for 2011-2012.

The Regents have tremendous power to support and improve higher education in this state. Their decisions on matters including tuition and fees, the hiring of university presidents and the creation of new schools and programs will affect students for generations. Having the Student Regent position filled by a UMBC student creates opportunities for all other UMBC students to share their concerns and priorities with somebody with a voice and a vote where it counts.  

Collin will be the third UMBC student to serve in the role.  Phil Shockley (2003-2004) and Josh Michael (2008-2009) also served while they were UMBC undergraduates.

Collin is an approachable, self-deprecating person who has devoted himself to studying, writing about and helping to shape state policy.  In high school he served as the student member of his county Board of Education.  At UMBC he's a Sondheim Scholar, SGA's Director of Government and Community Affairs, and Opinion Editor of The Retriever Weekly.  Last fall he was a student in the course on social change I teach with Delana Gregg (that's POLI 205/AMST 205/SOCY 205, for those of you about to start registering for fall 2011 courses).  He's going to be a great ambassador and resource for UMBC.  Congratulations, Collin!
