Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"

A: My faculty colleagues in the Political Science Department are really special people. They have made our department, in my view, unusually student-friendly. Further, besides being just plain nice, my colleagues work their students hard and set their standards high (something I try to do too). At least until the semester’s stress subsides, I’m not sure most students realize just how much time, creativity, and care most of my colleagues put into their teaching and how sincerely they want their students to succeed. But success does not mean an A along the path of least resistance; it means acquiring the knowledge as well as the subtler skills, demeanors and habits that mark an educated person and predict long-run success in one’s studies and career.

Making sure our finances are straight, so that we get to put on a good show, out of town and for the good people of UMBC, is the role that lets me do that, so that would have to be the role I most enjoy.

Don't sit in your room all day with friends you knew from before. Get out and make new friends. Join a sports team, rush a frat, go shoot some pool in the gameroom or have a beer at Flat Tuesdays with the local trivia nuts if you are over 21. A lot of people just sit in their dorm rooms constantly, and miss out on all that is going on at this school.

Graphic novels, Movies, fiction, fantasy, tabletop, video games, you play it, I am probably interested. Also a big fan of our Math Department here at UMBC. There are some fantastic professors there. Also, the sky-walks between AC-Row, they are your best friend in a Rain/Snow/Hail/Wind/Heat Storm which, being UMBC, we see all the time.

A: Favorite Spot on Campus?
SGA Voting Updates, Troubleshooting and Trivia

The SGA election runs through Wednesday night at midnight. As of noon Tuesday--the halfway point in the three-day election--1,391 UMBC students had voted. The all-time campus record turnout for an SGA election is 2,448 votes.

To cast your vote, go here: www.umbc.edu/studentvote.

A few students have reported being unable to select choices on the ballot. If you have that problem, it's probably because you're using an outdated web browser. Older versions of Internet Explorer seem to cause the problem most frequently. Try opening a different browser or voting on a different computer.

The results of this election will be announced at 4:00 p.m. Thursday in the student organizations space on The Commons' 2nd floor.

Some election trivia:

2 = number of votes separating the winner and loser of the closest UMBC SGA race in the past 5 years (for Senator)

7 = number of votes separating the winner and loser of the closest race for an Executive Branch position (Treasurer) in the past 5 years

2,368 = last year's total turnout (2nd highest in campus history)

14.5% = the percentage of the undergraduates at College Park who voted in their SGA election last week (as of noon, 13.6% of UMBC's undergraduates had voted in our election)

4 = number of times in the past 4 years UMBC's turnout has exceeded the turnout at College Park and Towson University as a percentage of the undergraduate student body

551 = minimum number of votes needed to win a seat in the SGA Senate last year

580 = minimum number of votes needed to win a seat on the SGA Finance Board last year

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: I enjoy knowing that I was able to create an intern position for BARCS, and that because of that more UMBC students are able to get involved in volunteering there. BARCS is doing a lot of great work to improve the welfare of animals in Baltimore City, and I like knowing that I'm helping them do that by bringing volunteers there. I also really really like getting to spend my Saturdays playing with dogs. It's an incredible mood booster.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: I have learned a lot about stepping outside of my comfort zone. I'm kind of an introvert, and getting involved in things at UMBC has helped me deal with that.

Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"

A: My favorite spot on campus is definitely the floor I live on (the Shriver LLC). I love living with people who are very service-minded. I also like the sense of community I get living there, everyone seems to know everyone and we hang out a lot. And our RA, Brian Stevens, is probably the best RA on campus. Just saying.

Note: The photo is of me and a BARCS dog named Paprika, who has since been adopted. It was taken by Steve Harmon, who volunteers at BARCS.
