Special Customized MATLAB Seminar for Graduate Students
Several graduate students have expressed a need for assistance with MATLAB. In order to assist you with understanding some of the more advanced concepts of MATLAB, PROMISE, the Graduate Student Development Unit of the Graduate School, and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics will sponsor a special, customized session for graduate students and others who want more in-depth instruction. The service will be provided by the Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Consulting (CIRC).

I’m asking some of the people you might encounter on the UMBC campus, including students, faculty, staff and alumni, to answer a few questions about themselves and their experiences. These are their responses.
Name: Chisom G. Ebinama
Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: I have been at UMBC for about 2 and half years; prior to that, I went to a 2 year college where I schooled for a year.
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A: Student Government Association (SGA) Senator and a Resident Assistant (RA)
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: Facilitating a positive student experience at UMBC while creating a platform for them to be heard.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I very much enjoy interacting with diverse people with similar or broader knowledge on campus, academic and social spectrum of life. I also like reaching out to students who are eager to contribute positively to their community as well as to their personal growth.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: I have learned that in order to excel in college, one need to be determined, focused and be willing to face and overcome challenges.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: There are two places that come to mind upon reading the above question—one is the 5th floor of the library where I very much recommend to anyone that is eager to study without any distractions. My second favorite spot would be the SGA common space, where I would be spending most of my time when I am less occupied.

A: I facilitate living and learning within my hall and the residential community.
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I enjoy working with students of all types: first-year vs upperclassman, domestic vs international, humanities majors vs STEM majors vs undeclared majors, etc.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: I learned that a person's experiences in life shape how they view and evaluate the things that are happening around that. We are constantly changing how we see things, and we have the ability to change and be changed by the perspective of others.

A: science-fiction/fantasy novels
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: Students are always telling me that they mistake me for a fellow student, or parents are asking me if I'm a junior or a senior. I don't mind at all; in fact, I like surprising others! It is really nice to be considered a part of this great community, even if I have to explain my role! Students, faculty, and staff have always made me feel welcome and at home here. Go retrievers!

Ever Bin?
When I walked into my childhood home in Los Angeles late on a Tuesday night in October, what struck me first were the things that had not changed. It had been more than six years since my last visit, and in my memory the house had taken on a soft glow like a half-remembered dream. But as I stood with my parents in the family room, seeing for the first time the kitchen they remodeled half a decade ago and the souvenirs from recent trips abroad, what I really noticed were the tangible reminders of a bygone age: the familiar brick fireplace, the wallpaper, and the books still in their places on the shelves.
Alone in my old bedroom at midnight, I opened the doors to what had once been my closet and found, undisturbed, my collection of plastic bins. Each was filled with artifacts from a specific period in my earlier life: school papers, awards, letters, receipts, buttons, handwritten notes, official bulletins. In a time before electronic data storage and ubiquitous cell phone cameras, these documents and artifacts had been the stuff and substance of everyday life. I pulled out one of the bins, with the label “Harvard Law School, 1989-1991,” and began to sift.
Later in my visit, my parents suggested that I take those bins with me back to Baltimore. Someday, maybe I will. But for now, I’m very glad to know that all those artifacts are safe in my old closet, in airtight containers, never fading, thousands of miles away.
