Lessons from a Snowball to the Face

When I was 6 or 7 years old, my family spent a weekend at Big Bear Lake, about 120 miles from our home in suburban Los Angeles. It was the middle of winter, and the trip was one of one of those we warm climate-dwellers would describe as "going to the snow." My aunt and uncle's family made the trip as well, and I spent a lot of time with my cousins playing in all that strange, cold, white stuff on the ground.

At one point my uncle playfully threw a snowball at me, not realizing it contained a chunk of ice. The blow split my lip, and I started to bleed, and to cry like crazy. As we trudged back to our lodge for some disinfectant and a bandage, my uncle said, "David, I'm very impressed with how you're handling this. If it were [his daughter, my cousin], she'd be doing a lot more yelling and crying."

I stopped crying instantly, and my mind began to turn over the idea that I could show bravery by holding back my tears, and that this was (apparently) a good thing.

Obviously I wasn't the only male child being taught that lesson, and my uncle's undoubtedly well-meaning comment was far from its only source in my life. My later tendency as a young adult to suppress negative emotions, which led to bouts of anxiety and depression, could hardly be traced back to one grown-up's encouraging remark on a snow-covered mountain.

But over the years, when I've occasionally replayed the scene in my mind, I've reflected on the power of positive feedback from an authoritative source. To the extent that I was already brave, I wanted only to be more so. And to the extent that I suspected I was not brave at all, and experienced my uncle's remark as an undeserved compliment, I wanted only to avoid the humiliation of failing to live up to his expectation.

A: I motivate myself and others to be better using humor and music.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: I LOVE entertaining! Even though UMBC is a very academically driven school students need a place where they can release stress and have some fun. Being a part of the Mama's Boys all male a cappella group and (seb) lets me relieve my personal stress by planning events for other students to come and enjoy. I love being in front of a crowd and creating an atmosphere that they relate to and be a part of while also being enjoyable. Mama's Boys first cultivated this love by giving me the chance to use music to express myself. Being a leadership figure in the group is especially fulfilling because I have grown so much during my time with the group and now I get to lead the new members every year and make sure that they get as awesome as an experience as I did.

The experience that I have had with the Mama's Boys mirrors my time with Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. The one year that I have spent with this amazing group of smart, caring, helpful, and all around awesome men has prepared me for the many leadership roles that I have on campus. I love being an active participent in the associate member process and watching thew new members grow as people and students. It makes me happier than ever to have the chance to connect with Pi Kapps on a deeper level than most of the acquaintances I have on campus.

The most recent group that I have joined is (seb). It is one of the most driven, goal oriented, fun, creative, amazing (I could go on and on), and caring groups of people that I have ever come across. They have given me the chance to design (which is one of my favorite things to do!) and be a part of the planning of events for students on campus to experience. With the leadership of our AMAZING President, Evan Ponter: one of my biggest role models on campus, Vice President, Stefanie Mavronis: one of the smartest and most driven people I have or will ever met, and Advisor, Lindsey Mitchell: always keeping me and the rest of the group on the right path, I have gotten a glimpse of how a real world business runs while being in a setting that cultivates and applauds creativity. Getting to work with these leaders and the rest of the group inspires me everyday to better myself and the UMBC community. I have never felt more at home than I do with (seb) and I can't begin to thank them enough.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: During my time as an associate member of Pi Kappa Phi I learned the importance of time management, problem solving skills, conversational skills, how to effectively work in a group, and how it feels to commit to and achieve a goal. These are valuable lessons that I use everyday in my other organizations and will carry with me for the rest of my life. Other than those lessons, someone once said a quote that I keep in the back of my head with everything I do: "take things seriously, but not too seriously"

Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"

A: Committed and driven people

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: One of my favorite places on campus is the amphitheater behind the fine arts building. If you haven't been there, GO CHECK IT OUT (now...go!....well, first finish reading then go)! It is a wonderful outdoor performance/relaxing space that is under-utilized by students. If you ever are looking for a quiet spot to chillax/perform then check it out!

Preparing for academic success in 2012: 5 things to do BEFORE classes begin.

Classes at universities in Maryland begin in a few days. Over the past few weeks, there have been questions concerning what can be done to adequately prepare for a new semester of graduate courses. Part of the answer is in the question itself: one must “prepare” for the new semester before classes begin. There are several things that can be done to prepare. Here are a few suggestions:

1) Remind yourself that you really want this degree. Think about your career goals. Review job opportunities in the field of your choice so that you’ll know what kinds of credentials you’re working toward.

2) Get your house in order. Move close to campus, plan your travel times and routes, think about how life at home will run while you’re in school. If you have a family, make a plan for quality time, pick-up times for children, and other items like sharing duties with other family members or friends. If you work while attending school, plan ahead so that you have solid times for work responsibilities, travel between work and school, time in class, and study time.

3) Have a plan for strong performance. For example, you can re-read the Guaranteed 4.0 book (also available on Amazon) which discusses re-writing notes, talking with professors, and reading chapters before class. During the PROMISE Summer Success Institute, we provided a free copy of this book to all new students. If you have another system, review that system and plan to follow the tips. Identify what you did correctly last semester and where you might have fallen short according to that plan. Once you identify gaps are, address how you will make changes for the upcoming semester.

4) Prepare all of your materials in advance. Get copies of all of the syllabi. Even if the syllabi online are from previous semesters, they will give you an idea of the load and expectations for the course. Get all of your books. These days, with Amazon, you can get almost any book without having to wait for materials to be available in the bookstores.

5) Make outlines and timelines. Include a timeline for your classes and study times. In your timeline, include time for professors’ office hours. Think about the times that you can make yourself available for study groups. Some courses may require projects and you may need to be flexible. Think, in advance, about your flexible times. Begin an outline for each course now, before the start of class. Make a list of the concepts that you need to learn by the end of the course, and begin to familiarize yourself with some of the terms and concepts.

This is a short list, and you may have other things that you like to do to prepare. We don’t want students to go into class with a notebook and simply wait for the professor to provide all of the information. That method may have worked throughout undergraduate studies, but in graduate school, one must be a proactive learner. In graduate school, the professor will introduce the concept and will present the material, but you will be expected to analyze and synthesize information outside of the classroom. Employ whatever method works for you. Prepare, be productive, and be consistent throughout the semester. Good luck and have a great year!
