Are you working on your dissertation? Have you participated in at least on DH session in the past? If so, you’re invited to join the group. Your requirement? We have several alumni who have taken postdocs and faculty positions outside of the U.S. For example, some of our recent Dissertation House graduates are in postdoctoral or faculty positions in France, Egypt, Argentina and other places around the world. Some of our Summer Success Institute speakers have also taken time to work overseas. For example, Dr. Hector Carlo (recently received tenure) and Dr. Cristina Pomales of the Industrial Engineering Department at the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez, are now visiting professors at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.
On March 7, 2012, 12-2PM, in Commons 329, UMBC will sponsor a seminar on what it is like to work at universities in other countries. This workshop is sponsored as part of the “PROF-it: Professors-in-Training” and “PBB: Professors Beyond Borders” divisions of PROMISE. The workshop will feature faculty who have worked at other universities outside of the U.S. We look forward to learning from their experiences.

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: This is my second semester at UMBC.
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A: I am a Student Staff Member at the Women's Center.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: Women's Center Staff, Mama's Boy, Activist, Student, Honors College Council Member, Debater
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I enjoy the diversity of the experiences that I have at UMBC. Whether at a Mama's Boys performance, working at the Women's Center, or otherwise, I meet people with the most various backgrounds and experiences that I have ever met. Besides making great friends, I have also learned more in the past few months about how to be an effective leader, student, and person than I ever could have ever imagined.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: The most memorable thing that I have learned so far is the importance of putting yourself out there. If I had not been willing to try new things, attempt to overcome old fears, and meet as many people as I could, then this past semester would have been far less enriching.

Maryland's 2012 presidential primary election will take place on April 3rd. Early voting will be possible from March 24th-29th. Use the links below to register or request an absentee ballot. In addition to voting on prospective nominees for President of the United States, voters will choose nominees for the U.S. House of Representatives and, in Maryland, for U.S. Senator.

PROMISE is hosting Barrett Whitener, public speaking expert, on Wednesday, Feb. 15. Mr. Whitener will be presenting a lunch seminar on UMBC’s campus, but those who are unable to come may join us via the web. This year, we are attempting to provide more professional development opportunities for a greater number of participants through use of online technology. Our PROMISE alliance of UMBC, UMB, and UM College Park may soon increase to include all universities that serve graduate students within the University System of Maryland. As part of our PROMISE Pathways grant from the National Science Foundation, we are investigating new options for training and community building. Therefore, we are presenting the seminar and simulcasting a webinar. The webinar will be an online version of the seminar. Participants who join us online will be able to see the slides and hear the speaker. Participants who come to the “live” seminar will have a chance to interact with Mr. Whitener in person. Both the seminar and the webinar are free. To attend the seminar in person on UMBC’s campus (lunch is included at no extra cost), login to MyUMBC and click “I can attend”. Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
A: This is my fourth semester.
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A: Member of Pre-Med Society, Splash!, Shriver Living Learning Community, Symphonic Orchestra (violinist!), Honors College, National Society of Collegiate Scholars
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: Work-a-holic student, sarcastic/ sassy friend, and a big dreamer
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I sometimes feel like I'm a nomad! I'm a part of all these different organizations, some of them on very different planes but that is what I enjoy about my roles the most. At the end of the day, I realize just how lucky I am to have the opportunity to work with such diverse groups of people. Being able to transition from one mindset to another is a very interesting challenge and I love it. It keeps me on my toes and I'm never left bored or feeling tired. I love how I can work for Pre-Med during free hour, go to class, then head straight to a Splash! meeting, and finish the day off with a 2 hour orchestra rehearsal. I love the adrenaline rush I get from running all around campus keeping myself busy!
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: Don't be afraid to leave the comfort of your safety zone and try new things. I'm actually guilty of always staying within my safety net but I've learned to let go sometimes and just try things for the heck of it and not care about how silly I may look. Everyone always says this and I feel like it's become a cliche but college is definitely all about discovery. The way I think of it is you'll never really know what kind of person you are until you open up and put yourself in the spotlight.

A: Masterpiece series on PBS. I’m currently obsessed with this British drama set in the early 1900s called Downton Abbey.
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: I don't think I'm the first one to notice this but this tidbit about the dining hall has definitely been tested and tried multiple times and 100% of the people I have asked agree with me. Whenever you see tour groups on campus or know that it's orientation day, head on over to True Grits. Let's just say that on those days, the chefs go by the golden rule of "The way to a student's heart is through their stomach."

UMBC: (From Dr. Emilie Stuber) The group will be lead by Assistant Director, Dr. Bonita Johnsen, and she is hoping to get it started ASAP. She plans to run the group on Thursday afternoons, at 1:00, 2:00, or 2:30. Previous group members have been contacted; new members as welcome. The group from the January 2012 DH has nicknamed their group “INSANITY!” People in the group and on the DH blog from UMBC, UMCP, and UM College Park are working hard and counting down.
