A: I love all of my roles equally, as they are important to my identity and the culture I am a part of at UMBC. I have worked in several offices on campus as well as been a part of different clubs and organizations. Currently, I love being an ASB trip leader. The support that I have from my advisors within Student Life is AMAZING! Another aspect that that I LOVE is meeting new people from all over the world. Since coming to UMBC, I have certainly made many international friends and have had the ability to learn about many different societies and cultures. In fact, my very own roommates are Egyptian and Lebanese. Fortunately, I am bilingual so I have been able to connect with many members of HLSU or made friends from Latin America. Because I am involved in many different organizations, I am able to meet these people and roll around in the diversity. The flags hanging in the Commons was one of the reason I decided to come to UMBC. I knew, when I saw those flags, that I would be surrounded by the diversity that I crave. Sometimes I feel like I don't even need to leave America in order to learn about the world (although, traveling is one of my most favorite things to do!)

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: I took a political science 100 class last spring. The class was great, especially the professor. I ended up changing my major from polisci, but I still took away one of the most important things that anyone has ever told me: college is about learning; you can decide to come to get a degree or you can decide to learn. My professor told us that college is supposed to teach you HOW to think, not WHAT to think. I firmly believe in this statement and after this class, I never once doubted my decisions for my major, classes, interests, or actions. I truly believe that whatever I do at UMBC will help further my education and success in the future.

Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"

A: Music! I love singing to it, dancing to it, and making it!

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: My favorite spot on campus is right there on the quad, on a beautiful afternoon, I will sit on the platform next to Lecture Hall 1. It is right next to the stairs, beside the side door to the entrance. It's a random little spot and most people probably never notice it as they walk past, but I LOVE going there because I feel high up over the quad and can people-watch, do homework, or nap in the sun.

My other favorite spot for a rainy, sunny, or just regular Baltimore day, is the 7th floor of the library. Hardly anyone ever ventures up there, but it has the best, most beautiful view of the campus. As well, you can see into Baltimore City and on clear days you can see the Key Bridge and sometimes some water.

Also, CERA is so nice to go hiking in or for a little walk. The deer are always so great to see, they put a smile on my face!

My fourth favorite place on campus is Pig Pen Pond. Again, another place most people never go. I don't want to encourage too many people to go there (I'm being selfish, of course, because if everyone starts going there it won't be so special). SO go exploring and find these places and some new ones for yourself, it's worth it!!

Finally, make a UMBC bucket-list! Before graduation, I have over 25 activities that I hope to accomplish. I crossed a few off my list already. For example, I wanted to go mud-sliding. I did that last semester during finals week (and it was probably one of the most exhilarating and fun experiences I had with my roommates!)

BONUS VIDEO QUESTION: What else would you like to share? Ask yourself a question and answer it.

Sometimes Completing a Survey = Making a Difference

There are many ways to make a difference at UMBC, especially if you are interested in shaping or changing campus life. Most of them involve hard work, planning and determination. But once in a while students have an opportunity to influence the future of campus life simply by offering their opinions. Next week, some lucky freshman and seniors have that chance, because they will be invited at random by email to participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE).

NSSE is an annual survey administered by UMBC and other colleges and universities across the United States. UMBC's Office of Institutional Research explains that NSSE "gauges the extent to which colleges are providing experiences associated with a quality undergraduate education and the extent to which students are engaging in those educationally meaningful activities." Campus leaders have used the survey results to inform decisions about changes to programs and the curriculum. The Office of Institutional Research says that among the UMBC offerings that have been created in part based on students' responses to NSSE are first-year seminars, living-learning communities, Introduction to an Honors University courses, the new student book experience and the faculty mentor program.

So if you are one of the lucky invitees, please take the survey. And if you want to take the more challenging (but extremely rewarding) approach to campus change, fill out this application to join the 2012-2013 SGA.

A: In my junior year of college at the University of North Carolina, our chancellor, Michael Hooker, passed away from cancer at the age of 53. He was the son of a coal miner and the first person in his family to obtain a college degree. He was much admired throughout the state of North Carolina, and he often stressed during his time as chancellor that a public university should be “for the people,” to serve the students of the state. It was only after accepting my faculty position here that I learned that Michael Hooker had previously been the president at another great public university—UMBC! He had served as UMBC’s president from 1986 to 1992, when he was succeeded by President Hrabowski. From UNC to UMBC, I continue to be inspired by the mission that a great public research university should be “for the people,” not only serving our students but benefiting our communities as well.

A: When I was finishing graduate school and applying for jobs, my advisor, Dr. Walt Wolfram, encouraged me to accept an offer from UMBC because it is a place where faculty can be entrepreneurial and can be a part of social change. I took his good advice. Since then, I have learned for myself that UMBC truly is “Exceptional by Example.”

In the Admissions office, I could meet a student while giving a tour, assist them as they fill out an application, walk them through the enrollment and orientation process, and then help them learn more about UMBC during Welcome Week. In order to find our place at UMBC, we all had to start at the beginning and that's where I come in. What I’ve learned is that after you achieve one series of goals, it’s best to create a whole new list of things to accomplish so you never stay content with where you are. I’ve applied this to my grades, involvement, and daily tasks. In order to be the best at what I do, I have to keep chasing goals, and setting the bar higher for myself every chance I get.

When I got to show and he arrived on stage, I noticed that we were wearing the exact same thing, except he had on a cardigan, and, coincidentally, I had on the same blue hoodie that he was wearing on the front page of his website at the time.

After the show, I left the RAC and I kept noticed people around me doing double takes as I walked through the crowd with my friend. I kept hearing whispers saying, ""is that Donald?"" and ""wasn't Donald just on stage?"" As I walked over to Outtakes in the dining hall after the show, everyone I walked past on the way kept doing double takes because they thought Donald Glover was just casually strolling around the UMBC campus.

As I'm about to go into Outtakes, this girl comes up behind me yelling, ""Donald! Donald Glover!"" It took a while to realize she was talking to me the entire time. I guess I should thank the UMBC community for helping me to realize that if this degree thing doesn't work out, I can always just be Donald Glover's stunt double.
