A: I encourage students to get involved in the community and on-campus.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: I love everything I am involved in and if I had more time I would definitely be a part of so much more. I love going to College Democrats meetings because I love to listen to everyone talk and debate about different things, and they always have great things to say. They also have had some great speakers in the past and I’m excited for what they have in store for this semester.

Hispanic Latino Student Union is one of the clubs that always makes you feel welcome, even if you are not of Hispanic or Latino descent. We have a lot of different people that are a part of the club that are not Hispanic or Latino but are interested in our culture. We also throw awesome events! El Encuentro in the fall and Sazonate in the spring, both of which include lots of salsa, meringue, bachata as well as free food!

And of course one of my favorite things is OCGA and SGA in general. Office of Community and Governmental Affairs helps students get involved in the community and we also lobby in Annapolis. Right now, we’re doing some pretty great things that I am so excited for everyone to be a part of and I am so excited to start this semester as the new assistant director! What I love about SGA as a whole is the connections I’ve made and people I’ve met. Everyone there is so completely great and really wants to help students do whatever they think needs to be done on campus, and they’re all really funny people too. I’m so glad I am a part of such a great community.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: I think the most important thing I have learned while here is to make UMBC yours. I know everyone hears that a lot, but it’s so important to make the most of these 4 years because like high school, you’re going to remember these next years for the rest of your life. The friends you make, the classes you love, the events you go to, the awesome collection of free t-shirts you have, all of these things will be with you forever. When you look back on these things you want to be able to say “I helped make this happen” or “That’s why you should never forget your parking permit.” These are the years that will define who we are and what we make of ourselves, so I say live it up while you can.

Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"

A: Concerts, pizza, musicals, volleyball, television, ukuleles, music, baseball, singing and board games!

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: My favorite spot on campus is probably the volleyball courts near Chesapeake because I don’t have to walk all the way to Walker to play!

She discussed this post’s title (attributed to science.org), as she told students that they need to learn how to multitask. Too often, students work on one thing and get stuck on that one thing (e.g. paragraph for a paper, method for an experiment, piece of code) and they are unable to work on anything else until they are satisfied with the outcome. It is important to be focused, but there are often many things to do … or rather many things that must be done simultaneously. Advanced graduate students have to write, look for employment, run experiments, complete literature reviews, satisfy grant agencies that fund the advisor’s research, and several also teach. It is imperative to learn how to work on things in chunks. Keep those fires burning!

Two Fall Semester Leadership/Social Change Courses

If you're interested in developing your skills as a leader and agent of change, consider signing up for one of two fall semester courses:

Foundations of Leadership Development- 3 credits
PSYC 216 & EDUC 216 (cross-listed); Wednesdays 4:30-7 pm

This course is designed to expose students to principles and practices of leadership, incorporating opportunities to implement what is learned. It is a highly interactive course that requires extensive in-class discussion. The main goals are to help students better understand themselves, develop intercultural competence, communicate effectively in group settings, develop an ethical decision making process, value civic engagement and actively apply leadership skills.

Student quotes from anonymous course evaluation forms:

“The interactions in class and activities inherently enhanced learning about the subject”
“This was an immensely helpful and enjoyable class with a very unique style of learning the material”
“I have recommended (class) to several friends”
“Should be a required course if possible for all majors”

Please contact Lee Calizo (calizo@umbc.edu) with questions.

Civic Agency and Social Entrepreneurship- 3 credits
AMST 205, POLI 205 SOCY 205 (cross-listed); Tu-Th 11:30 am–12:45 pm

I teach this class with Delana Gregg, Assistant Director of the Sondheim Public Affairs Scholars Program. Students in this course read, think and talk about ideas and examples relating to the process of social change. They also work in groups to choose a social problem or opportunity and develop a practical project to create change at UMBC or in the wider community. Projects developed by students in previous semesters have included creating a basketball league for homeless men in Baltimore, putting up black and gold banners across the UMBC campus to build school spirit (you walk past them every day), setting up new applied research opportunities for UMBC undergraduates, developing new health and wellness resources for UMBC students, and installing hydration stations to discourage bottled water use on campus (the first of these has been installed in the Retriever Learning Center).

Just like in previous semesters, we plan to engage exciting guest instructors to help students build their skills and hone their ideas. Last fall’s lineup included UMBC Provost Phillip Rous, Vice President for Student Affairs Nancy Young, Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education Diane Lee, SGA President Catie Collins, Shriver Center Director Michele Wolff, and faculty members Brigid Starkey and Lee Boot.

If you have questions about this course, feel free to email me (David Hoffman, dhoffman@umbc.edu).

That Awkward Moment

That awkward moment at the beginning of each semester when you run into somebody you know and blank on the person's name.

That awkward moment when you're waiting for the doctor in the exam room and you don't know whether you're supposed to get undressed.

That awkward moment when your email account is hacked, and an email goes out to all of your contacts explaining that you are stuck in Scotland and need money wired immediately, and a couple of weeks later you cross paths with Dr. Hrabowski and he mentions getting a strange email and asks if everything is OK.

That awkward moment during a job interview when you're asked questions about work experiences you've never had, and it dawns on you that you somehow accidentally submitted the "just playing around with random text and formats" version of your resume.

That awkward moment when you're driving Welcome Week speaker Maura Cullen from her hotel to the campus and you realize that you've accidentally gotten on I-95 heading south, and there's no exit for five miles.

That awkward moment at the Wilkens Ave. Giant when you make eye contact with a student you know well from UMBC, and you're wearing a t-shirt, sweat pants and a baseball cap, about which you're suddenly a little self-conscious, but as you wave and start to say hello, the student blows right past you, having failed to recognize you, but then you make eye contact with another, random Giant customer who is smirking because he saw the whole thing.

That awkward moment when you post a list of some of your own awkward moments, and you wonder whether anyone is going to make it all OK by posting comments with awkward moments of their own.
