SGA Election Results Announced (Video)
The SGA election results are in. Kaylesh Ramu and Kian Larijani have been elected SGA President and Executive Vice President for 2012-2013. Michelle Kuah will serve as Vice President for Student Organizations, and Chisom Ebinama will serve as Treasurer. See all of the election results here. Congratulations to all of the winners, and to all who were courageous enough to make the race.
3,216 students (30.4% of all undergraduates) voted in the 3-day election, shattering the previous UMBC record of 2,521 set last year.

Over 50 conferences are held per year; each range in length from 3 to 4 days and attract an average of 250 participants per meeting.
Symposia locations are usually winter and mountain retreats selected for relaxed environments that optimize information exchange and promote collaborative relationships.

Kaplan Scholarship Available for Students Making a Difference

LOUIS L. KAPLAN SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The Louis L. Kaplan Scholarship Fund was established in 1977 by the University of Maryland Baltimore County Student Government Association in recognition of Dr. Kaplan’s many contributions to UMBC during his tenure as Interim Chancellor.
It was Dr. Kaplan’s wish, when the fund was first established, that students who displayed academic promise be assisted financially in order to continue their education at UMBC.
These guidelines set forth the conditions for the award of the scholarships which will honor Dr. Louis L. Kaplan and carry out his wishes.
1. NAME: The name of the Fund shall be: The Louis Kaplan Scholarship Fund
2. FUNDING: Income from the Louis L. Kaplan Scholarship Fund that has been established in the Common Trust Fund of the University will be treated as a permanent endowment, the principal and any unexpended income to be invested and reinvested under the authority of the University of Maryland Board of Regents. Contributions may be added to the original principal of the Louis L. Kaplan Fund as part of the endowment. The income from the scholarship fund shall be administered by the Office of Institutional Advancement.
3. AWARDS: A Louis L. Kaplan Scholarship(s) may be awarded to outstanding undergraduate students at the University of Maryland Baltimore County each year.
Amount of Awards: The amount of the awards (s) will be based on the interest earned annually on the principal in the fund account; half the interest earned each year will be available for distribution.
Criteria for Selection: The purpose of the award is to recognize UMBC students with proven academic achievement (minimum 3.0 grade point average) who will hold junior or senior status (minimum 60 credits) the following fall (credits must reflect on transcript by the end of the application semester), demonstrate financial need, and have made valuable contributions to the UMBC community. While financial need will be a consideration, it WILL NOT be the deciding factor in granting the award (s).
Nomination and Award Process: Applications should be submitted to the Vice President for Student Affairs office (Commons 319). Selection of a student or students for the award will be made by the selection committee by June 15 each year; the award will be presented for the following fall semester by the first week in October.

Group II – Advanced Stage PhD Students
Get a BIG head-start on the next critical step toward an academic career!
With a grant from NIH, in 2011 we launched a brand new approach to assisting the development of young scientists called the Academy for Future Science Faculty. The Academy uses sophisticated coaching techniques to supplement what PhD students get from their research mentors and graduate programs. Students participate in annual summer conferences and stay connected with student colleagues and their Academic Career Coaches throughout the year. The Academy has been designed for students who have the long-term goal of becoming a faculty member. Phase I started in 2011 with 100 students just beginning the PhD. Group II – Advanced Stage PhD Students
Get a BIG head-start on the next critical step toward an academic career!
With a grant from NIH, in 2011 we launched a brand new approach to assisting the development of young scientists called the Academy for Future Science Faculty. The Academy uses sophisticated coaching techniques to supplement what PhD students get from their research mentors and graduate programs. Students participate in annual summer conferences and stay connected with student colleagues and their Academic Career Coaches throughout the year. The Academy has been designed for students who have the long-term goal of becoming a faculty member. Phase I started in 2011 with 100 students just beginning the PhD. Real People Profiles: Priya Davey
I’m asking some of the people you might encounter on the UMBC campus, including students, faculty, staff and alumni, to answer a few questions about themselves and their experiences. These are their responses.
Hometown: Glen Burnie, Maryland
Q: How long have you been at UMBC?
Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?
A: I am a second semester Peer Health Educator.
Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?
A: Peer Health Educator, Biology major, STRiVEr, visionary, friend :)
Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?
A: I love being able to build connections with people in a variety of backgrounds and I love what I do as a Peer. I feel like I've grown more this year alone than any other time in my academic career. Even though I am a commuter, I still feel a sense of community on campus. There is always room to learn something new and to be a part of something beyond what we would expect of ourselves.
Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?
A: The more you step outside of your comfort zone, the more it expands. This lesson was particularly evident with my participation in STRiVE, among many other lessons that I intend to carry with me through life beyond UMBC. When I first came to UMBC I didn't know where I would fit in and I pretty much kept to myself. Slowly but surely I found my niche with Peer Health and it opened a lot of doors for some amazing opportunities. I learned to never be afraid to take a risk because life is entirely too short to stand passively and wait for things to come your way. If not now, then when?

A: Travelling, reading, learning, meeting new people, watching movies, and cheesecake!
Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?
A: Not too long ago, a friend helped me discover the rock garden by the Commons garage and the pond by the research park. They were such peaceful places and it helps to leave the fast paced world of UMBC to take a moment for yourself.
