Applications for graduate school are usually due between December and February of the year before you are going to enter graduate school. PROMISE: Maryland’s AGEP has developed a paper (presented at a conference in 2012) that will help you with the requirements for your graduate school applications. The paper can be downloaded here: Preparing for Engineering and Other STEM Graduate/Post-Graduate Masters and Doctoral Programs. It is part of the Proceedings of the Tenth LACCEI Latin American and Caribbean Conference (LACCEI 2012), Megaprojects: Building Infrastructure by fostering engineering collaboration, efficient and effective integration and innovative planning, July 23-27, 2012, Panama City, Panama.

One of the most important sections of the paper is Section 4. Here is a subset of that section.

Innovations in Program Content Designed to Increase Access

PROMISE seminars and workshops for graduate school preparation focus on four key areas: Transcript, Letters of Recommendation, Statement of Purpose, and GRE Score. Students are cautioned to remember that they should be striving for top grades in all of their courses.

4.1 Letters of Recommendation: 10 Item Checklist

Students who attend UMBC’s seminars are cautioned to seek very strong letters of recommendation from faculty members, a concept that has long been part of the foundation of advice that is given to students by the National GEM Consortium. UMBC’s facilitator teaches students to provide their faculty recommenders with 10 items: (See Section 4.1: Preparing for Engineering and Other STEM Graduate/Post-Graduate Masters and Doctoral Programs and Dr. Tull’s List)

4.2 Statement of Purpose: Four Paragraph Template

During UMBC’s PROMISE seminars and Horizons workshops, students are taught to thoroughly read through the engineering departments’ websites and write their statements of purpose based on their personal research interests and experiences, coupled with research that is being conducted in the department. When students are applying to Graduate School, and to doctoral programs in particular, they must be sure to make the case for the reasons why they want to be there. The statement of purpose should reflect the “why.” Why you? Why that particular research? Why do you want to work with those professors or that lab? (See the 4 paragraph structure in the full paper: Preparing for Engineering and Other STEM Graduate/Post-Graduate Masters and Doctoral Programs.)

4.3 GRE Score: Focused attention on mathematics

Engineering programs expect students to have aptitude for mathematics. The GRE provides faculty admissions committees with a standard measure by which to evaluate prospective students. During UMBC’s workshops and seminars, students are reminded that many of the topics in the “Quantitative Reasoning” portion of the GRE include concepts from high school or secondary school. Other topics are taught in introductory statistics courses and some students aren’t exposed to probability and statistics until they reach the university. However, students in the seminars regularly reveal that they didn’t know that they had to study for the GRE. While inferential statistics and the ability to construct proofs are not tested on the GRE, several students in seminars have been hesitant when they were asked for immediate answers to sample questions involving factorials, inequalities, or geometric representations. The students said that they “used to know” how to solve certain kinds of equations or that they “didn’t remember” concepts. To prepare students for the exam, UMBC’s seminars provide students with a live sample problem solving session, and the list of skills that they need in order to do well on the quantitative measure. (See Table 3 in the full paper: Preparing for Engineering and Other STEM Graduate/Post-Graduate Masters and Doctoral Programs.)

Scenes from Involvement Fest (photos)

Last Wednesday at 6:00 a.m., my colleague Sara Leidner and I were online looking at the weather forecast, which showed a 75% chance of rain by noon. The Involvement Fest vendors had to be told whether the event was going to happen by 6:30 a.m. With reluctance, she made the tough call to postpone. Then we rooted for a thunderstorm to come along and validate the decision, but the rain never materialized; all we got was uncomfortable heat and an overabundance of humidity.

Involvement Fest was rescheduled for Monday, and it was perfect.

I was standing in a corner with Co-Create UMBC coauthor Craig Berger interviewing students for a long while, so I didn't get photos of the musical performances. But here is some of what I did see.

Learning to Commit

The choices were mine to make, or so it seemed to me at the time. Pick a major. Decide on a career path. Figure out where to apply to graduate school, and where to go. Find a mate for life. The potential consequences were vast. And I felt lost.

How was I supposed to know where to find the door with my name on it, the portal to a satisfying life and the fulfillment of my potential and hopes? I couldn’t have named an older adult whose path I would willingly have committed to follow, or whose life I would have chosen for my own, at least not forever. I had no way of knowing, really, what it was like to be a middle-aged lawyer, or manager in a business, or professor. How could I choose to shackle myself to any plan to become one of them, especially when I didn’t know what I was going to be like years down the line? I felt like I had far more information when it came to choosing a brand of toothpaste than I did in shaping my trajectory.

And so, whenever I was forced to choose, I made the choice that committed me least, even in small things. When people asked if I could participate in an event, I said probably, not yes. In personal relationships, I made no promises. I elected the path through graduate school with the most potential branches. I imagined that one day, certainty would descend upon me, and I would know who I really was and what I wanted, and I would gain the power to choose, and to commit.

As my friends began making life commitments all around me, I began to think I was badly broken, or born without some crucial gene. Sometimes I’d read books or watch movies where the main characters faced life-determining choices, and circumstances conspired to illuminate their paths and set them free, and I’d experience an agonizing lump-in-throat, tears-welling-up sense of futility, because circumstances were not conspiring for me.

Those years of struggle seem distant now, though I treasure their memory, since they are the primary source of whatever wisdom I have. If you’re like I was, you may have to live through your own years of hedging and doubt, because no words from me could fully awaken you to the reasons you can’t find your real home and your real path.

But here are the words I might send back in time to myself if I could: You are not broken. Your sense of being lost is completely understandable, and it’s OK. The choices you face are not easy ones, regardless of how easily and quickly some people may want you to make them. Your future happiness does not depend on being certain today. But understand this: The real barrier to your making commitments is not a lack of information. It’s not external to you at all, so you won’t overcome it solely by gathering data about your options. The real barrier is that you’ve internalized some deeply problematic notions: that you have a lifelong obligation to fulfill other people’s hopes and expectations for you; that your own instincts and intuitions are not trustworthy; that your real life has not started yet; and that making commitments necessarily means giving up the possibility of continuing to grow into some better, happier, more complete version of yourself. Give yourself permission to live, see yourself as fully alive, trust yourself, indulge yourself, know yourself, and promise yourself that you will always be open to self-discovery. None of these things will fully dispel the pain and ambiguity. But they will help you make a start.

Here are a couple of stories from my own process of making life choices: one professional, one personal.

PROMISE Opening Meeting/Dinner Friday, Sept. 14, 2012 – UMBC Game Room! Faculty, postdocs, grad students, and staff – all welcome!

PROMISE: Maryland’s AGEP is dedicated to increasing the numbers and diversity of Ph.D.s in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math fields. PROMISE also provides a strong support system for underrepresented students of all fields, and for all graduate students. Come out for dinner and connections.

We have continually heard many of the same questions:

Does UMBC have any other students who went to HBCUs, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, or Native American Universities or Tribal Colleges?

I came from a small town in the south. Are there any other students from Georgia or North Carolina?

Are there any other students from the Caribbean?

I heard that there are only a few graduate students from the African Diaspora, where are they?

I miss being able to hear and speak Spanish. Where are the other students from Puerto Rico, Mexico, or South America?

The answer for each of the questions above is yes … we have graduate students from these diverse backgrounds and you can meet or re-connect with them at the PROMISE Opening Meeting!

This connection meeting will allow you to meet other students, staff, postdocs, and faculty members who also have similar experiences. Did you know that some of our faculty and staff are also from HBCUs, MSIs (Minority-Serving Institutions) or South America, or had the same kinds of experiences that you may be having now? Come out and meet them! We have faculty, postdocs, staff, and graduate students from Colombia, Panama, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Spain, etc. We have members in our community who went to either undergrad or grad school or taught at Howard, FAMU, NC A&T, and more! We have people who have been active in the National Society of Black Engineers, Society for the Advancement of Chicano and Native American Scientists, the Compact for Faculty Diversity (includes social sciences and education programs), and other organizations that serve the needs of populations that are underrepresented in a variety of disciplines! Come on out and meet peers and mentors!

Dinner will be served. Please feel free to bring your family members, including children. If you are bringing family members, please let us know how many in the comments below. Children of our students always love it when we have programs in the game room!

RSVP today!

Students from UMBC should RSVP on http://my.umbc.edu/groups/promise/events/13055. Students from other schools may RSVP by writing a comment below this post. (Please RSVP so that we can order the right amount of food.
