<Title>STEM Future Faculty Fellowship &#8211; A Unique Postdoc Opportunity at Northeastern</Title>

    <p>Over the last year, the NSF PROMISE AGEP has been strengthening relationships with NSF ADVANCE programs which serve women faculty. Some of the ADVANCE programs are working to broaden participation at the faculty level for women and for underrepresented scholars (male and female). You already know that <a href="http://promiseagep.wordpress.com/2012/07/18/umbc-postdocs-for-faculty-diversity-application-due-november-2012-for-2013/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC has a Postdoctoral Fellowship for Faculty Diversity</a> (applications due Nov. 16, 2012.) Our friends and colleagues at Northeastern also have invited PROMISE participants to apply for their fellowship, due January 2013.  Here are the details from Northeastern. <em>Please note that we have other PROMISE alumni who have lived and worked in Massachusetts (MIT, Harvard, University of Massachusetts Amherst), so if you win the fellowship, we will be able to connect you with contacts.</em></p>

    <p>Northeastern University invites nominations and applications from candidates in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields for the Northeastern University STEM Future Faculty Fellowship Program. </p>

    <p>5)      to enhance the academic environment of Northeastern’s STEM fields by providing opportunities for students and faculty to gain experience in multi-cultural, broadly diverse and inclusive work settings and research collaborations that improve the capacity of all their members.  </p>

<Title>Why Bother Voting?</Title>

    Let’s be real: Your vote is not going to determine the outcome of the 2012 national election.  Even state and county races will be decided by more votes than yours.  So why bother voting?  We think there are some excellent reasons: 
    <br>
    <ol>
    <li>Sometimes what matters is not just who wins but by how much.  Take Maryland’s Question 6, which would allow gay and lesbian couples to marry.  The outcome is going to send a message across America, and a part of that message is going to be encompassed in the amount of support for each side. Every vote will matter. </li>
    <li>Public officials and candidates in the next election are going to know how many people in your demographic group voted, and that knowledge is likely to shape their priorities.  If you want them to address the concerns of your age group (for example), you should show up and be counted. </li>
    <li>The point of an election is not just to choose the winning candidates. It is also to affirm that we are one nation despite our differences. When you participate, you become symbolically connected to every living American, every patriot who ever sacrificed for our country, every civil rights hero, and to the Revolution itself.  In the diverse faces standing in lines that bend around the walls of our schools, community centers, and government buildings, we see our family, friends, neighbors, and fellow citizens demonstrating their commitment to democracy.  And they should see you. </li>
    <li>To vote is to accept responsibility. Our communities and nation face countless challenges. Our governments at every level are taking action, or failing to act, in our name. You can turn your back and rage against the machine, or you can get your hands dirty building a better world. Voting alone is not going to fix anything, but it is an important step: a way of saying, “I’m here and ready to play my part.” </li>
    <li>Voting is not just a civic ritual but a firsthand experience of the democratic process.  What do you think of early voting? Electronic voting? Voting for electors rather than directly for President?  Vote, gain some insight, and then do something about it. </li>
    <li>A vote is a ticket to broader influence.  Even if your vote will not determine the outcome of the election, your conversations and organizing work can inspire many other voters, enough to make a difference.  But if you don’t vote, you have no credibility. </li>
    <li>There is power in walking your talk. Vote, and you do not have to live with the image of yourself as a maker of excuses. Vote, and be proud that you did.</li>

I have eaten there at least once per day the last four years. Not only is the food great, but they really have a great staff of employees, who I know on a first name basis. There is a deli back home where I have the same experience. Eating there everyday gives me a sense of community, the same way I feel in my hometown. I recommend roast beef on 12-grain toast.</span></span></div>

<Title>Be the Next Student Regent</Title>

    <span>The <a href="http://www.usmd.edu/about_usm/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">University System of Maryland</a> encompasses 12 institutions including UMBC and two regional higher education centers. It employs more than 14,000 faculty members and owns more than 1,000 buildings. Its annual operating budget is more than $4.5 billion. There are more than 180,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at its various institutions. But only one of them gets to participate directly in the decisions of the <a href="http://www.usmd.edu/regents/members/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Board of Regents</a>, the system's governing body. Three times in the past ten years, that one student--the Student Regent--has come from UMBC.  Could you be next?</span></div>

<Title>Word.</Title>

    Starting a few years ago, in everyday conversations with my wife Sharon, when she would make a point I thought was especially relevant or well said, I would reply: "Word." <br>
    <br>
    I promise you this was mostly meant to be self-mocking. I was way too old to be using such an urban slang-ish term, and anyway that use of "Word" had jumped the shark years before. But it was a highly efficient way to convey multiple meanings: humorously acknowledging that I'm tragically unhip; poking fun at the possibility that I might mistake myself for hip because I'm around younger people so often; saluting our relationship, in which love makes self-mockery painless and enjoyable; and, yes, agreeing with Sharon's point and phrasing.<br>
    <br>
    At least, that's what it meant when I started. But before long my using "Word" to acknowledge Sharon's points had become a habit--a bad one, in her view, since the term seemed drained of its humor by overuse.  So she started to push back: "Stop saying 'Word!'"<br>
    <br>
    But even her pushing back was kind of funny, because she was accusing me of being so extremely unhip that I was blind to the falseness of my self-mockery.  So I had to fight back.  I pointed out that she also overused a phrase: Every time our dog Bucky jumped on the sofa, she would yell "Don't sit on Bucky!," as if I was always just one warning away from crushing the canine.  To mock her, I switched phrases: Whenever I would previously have said, "Word," I would instead say, "Don't sit on Bucky!"<br>
    <br>
    Then she started using "Don't sit on Bucky" the same way, and we sort of got used to it.  The result is this: In my home, "Don't sit on Bucky" is a synonym for "I fully endorse what you just said." (Also: "Seriously, don't sit on the dog").<br>
    <br>
    I love that words are not fixed, and all of us have the power, through relationships, to create local meanings that extend our capacity to know and communicate with each other.  What are some of the meanings you've helped to create?  What's your "Don't sit on Bucky"?<br>

<Title>Three Election Wishes</Title>

    There's a national election coming up, and the polls show it's going to be close. I imagine nearly everyone paying attention has had the fantasy, at some point, of being able to supply other voters with additional general civic knowledge on which to base their judgments. It's not merely our imagining that with more information and wisdom people would leap to our side and sweep our candidates to victory (or believing, arrogantly, that we have cornered the market on insight and good judgment). It's more our hoping that widespread political education might shift the incentives facing candidates, so that instead of being tempted to manipulate and drive us apart through oversimplifications and distortions, they would feel compelled to embrace facts, frame choices honestly, and even seek common ground in order to win our votes.<br>
    <br>
    What kinds of political education would accomplish this?  I'm interested in your thoughts.  Here are my top three wishes:<br>
    <ul>
    <li>I wish every voter could have the experience of truly getting to know people who are superficially different from themselves along as many dimensions as possible (including race, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identity, geographic origin, citizenship status, religion, political ideology and life experience).  I want everyone who votes to understand the impact of alternative choices through many people's eyes.</li>
    </ul>
    <ul>
    <li>I wish every voter could have the experience of working successfully with others to solve a serious community problem or build an important new resource.  That would position them to anticipate the outcome of alternative courses of action, and to evaluate candidates' competing claims.</li>
    </ul>
    <ul>
    <li>I wish every voter could have a thorough education in climate science and natural resource economics, so they could trace the impact of our consumption and pollution on long-term weather patterns, sea levels, ecosystems, the ice caps, the ozone layer, and our water supply.  Voters with that knowledge could anticipate consequences of different energy policies, and evaluate candidates based in part on how their actions would contribute to the sustainability of planetary resources on which all our lives and our well-being depend.<br></li>
    </ul>

    <span><span>A: </span></span><span><span>I've always thought UMBC has had a beautiful campus with lot of great views. One of the best views you can find is on the roof of the Administration Building. During my first year at UMBC the new Admissions Counselors (there were 5 newbies at once!) had a meeting with Dr. Hrabowski. Meeting Dr. Hrabowski as a fresh-out-college new Admissions Counselor is intimidating, by the way, but he was friendly and welcoming as always. After our meeting Dr. Hrabowski invited us up to the roof of the Administration Building, and of course we jumped at the opportunity. What made the experience particularly memorable was that we were on the roof in December. And it was cold. And snowing. Although we were a bit cold, the campus looked wonderful under a light blanket of snow, and I was certainly having fun.</span></span></div>
