    <p>The Summer Dissertation House is coming to UMBC, July 9-12. Graduate students who plan to participate should <a href="http://dissertationhouse.wordpress.com/apply/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">follow the application procedures on the application webpage for the Dissertation House</a>.</p>
    <p><strong>Open application period: Early bird May 13, 2013 – May 24, 2013. Late registration May 25, 2013 </strong><strong>– May 31, 2013 (Applications received during the early bird period will have priority)<br>

    <li>The Dissertation House runs from 9 AM – 5PM, for four days, Tuesday, July 9 through Friday, July 12.</li>
    <li>Students must plan to attend the full session, for each of the 4 days.</li>
    <li>Daily schedule includes 2 mini-lectures, and 5 hours of writing per day.</li>
    <li>Breakfast, Lunch, and a snack will be served daily.</li>
    <li>The Dissertation House is free for UMBC’s graduate students.</li>
    <li>There are 15 to 18 spaces available for the Dissertation House.</li>
    <li>Details regarding eligibility can be found on the application page of the website for the Dissertation House.</li>

    <span><span><span>A: </span></span><span>After being at UMBC for two and a half years, I must say my favorite spot on campus is The Commons because it is always lively and you can certainly see how diverse UMBC is. The Second (Honors Lounge) and Third Floor of the Library are also places I like to go when I have a little down time. There are always free food events on campus, from departmental events to (seb)-sponsored events (Breakfast &amp; Bingo, Free Wings, etc.). A little known fact about UMBC that I discovered through my Science 100 class is that the UMBC campus contains four arms of the Herbert Run--all which join in the southern border of the campus. There is also a .6 mile interactive trail, named CERA, by the Research Park.</span></span></div>

<Title>Two Fall Semester Leadership/Social Change Classes</Title>

    <span>If you're interested in building your skills as a leader and agent of positive social change ... well, you've chosen the right university, because there are <a href="http://umbcbreakingground.wordpress.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">plenty of opportunities</a>. I'm going to highlight just two of many fall courses that may appeal to you.</span><br>

    <strong><span>Civic Agency &amp; Social Entrepreneurship (AMST 205/POLI 205/SOCY 205)</span></strong><br>

    <span><span>Students in this interactive course will explore ideas and examples illuminating the process of social change. You will also work in groups to develop practical projects to create change at UMBC or in the wider community. Projects developed by students in previous semesters have included creating a basketball league for homeless men in Baltimore, putting up fiberglass Retriever statues around campus with designs reflecting UMBC's values and diversity (you'll see these next fall), setting up new applied research opportunities for UMBC undergraduates, developing new health and wellness resources for UMBC students, installing hydration stations to discourage bottled water use on campus (the first of these was installed in the Retriever Learning Center), and expanding campus food options (<a href="http://www.retrieverweekly.com/technology/yohka-tanaka-conducts-research-into-social-reform-1.3018469#.UVs25ResiSo" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">spotlighted</a> in the current issue of <em>The Retriever Weekly</em>). Getting a real project off the ground can be challenging work, but the payoff is that you will develop the confidence and perspective you need to succeed as an agent of change.</span></span><br>
    <span><br><span>Just like in previous semesters, we plan to engage exciting guests to help you build your skills and hone your ideas.     <span>This course is designed to help develop effective, ethical leaders. <span> As UMBC student you can interact with and influence other UMBC students on a daily basis.  This course is designed to help you to develop as a leader and to prepare you to have a positive influence on others at UMBC and throughout your life.  Through experiential projects and theoretical readings, this course will provide a foundation for your leadership development.</span></span></div>
    <span><br><span>Example of how this course differs from other courses:</span><br><br><span>1) Class participation focused: </span><span>Leadership is an inherently relational process.  Within this course, you will share the responsibility to create a dynamic learning environment in which you will have the opportunity to understand, acquire, practice, reflect, and apply leadership knowledge, skills, and values. Each member of the class will be an expert in his or her own personal experience and how that experience informs and shapes the meaning made from course readings.  </span><br><br><span>2) Many right answers about leadership: You will not leave this class with a 12 step plan for becoming a superhero, but you will practice skills that will help you make a difference in your community and improve your relationships.</span><br><br><span>3) No PowerPoint presentations. At all.</span></span><br>

<Title>Happy 10th Birthday PROMISE! From April 1, 2003 to Today: A Message from the Director</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>Dear Participants, Alumni, and Friends of PROMISE,</p>
    <p>Today, I celebrate 10 years as the Director of PROMISE: Maryland’s AGEP. For those of you who remember my first day at UMBC, I started out in an office on the 5th floor of the Administration Building. I am so happy that so many of you who were students then, have gone on to finish your master’s and doctoral degrees. You are leaders, professors, directors of programs, you have built families, garnered hosts of friends, and you have your own mentees. As I move into the 10th year as your director, I hope to be able to continue to serve you well and help you to reach your dreams.</p>
    <p>Please mark Saturday, August 17, 2013 on your calendars. We will be celebrating our PROMISE growth at the 2013 Summer Success Institute (SSI) on UMB’s campus. We invite all students, alumni, and friends to join us for the celebration! Please plan to join us! I would love to see you there!</p>
    <p>The pictures below from that first year include two former peer mentors who are no longer with us, the late <a href="http://promisetributes.blogspot.com/p/jessica-soto-perez-tribute.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Jessica Soto Perez</a> (pink sweater), and in the second picture, the late <a href="http://promisetributes.blogspot.com/2010/09/remembering-dr-angela-grant-former.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dr. Angela Grant</a> (center). Jessica was a Peer Mentor (Chemical Engineering) at UMBC, and Angela was a Peer Mentor (Math)  at UMCP.
