I particularly enjoy training graduate students who will go on to become psychologists. They have such infectious energy and enthusiasm and keep me on my toes! I also enjoy working individually with students who are courageous enough to come in for counseling. My experience working as an advisor for the Relationship Violence Awareness and Prevention Advocate program is also a highlight of the work that I do here. Overall, the highly motivated, dedicated, and supportive people I work with keep me energized and engaged, loving my job after all these years.

Your UMBC Bucket List

by David Hoffman

If one of your goals was to attend the university that tops U.S. News & World Report's list of innovative national universities, congratulations; mission accomplished (5 years running). Now the question is, what's on your UMBC Bucket List: the things you want to be sure to do here while you have the chance? Sharing our lists at the start of the year has become a tradition. It's a way of holding ourselves accountable for making sure we have the experiences we don't want to miss.

I've been able to cross a lot of items off of my list over the years (this is my 11th at UMBC), but I still have plenty left: people I want to work with, events to attend, places on campus I've never seen from the inside (I'm looking at you, UMBC Observatory). This semester I'm planning to cross off the biggest and best item of them all: I'm set to complete my doctorate in Language, Literacy & Culture and become a very proud UMBC alum (in addition to being a staff member).

CFP: Communicating science visually in the digital age

<Tagline>Special issue of Science Communication</Tagline>

Call for papers for a special issue of Science Communication: Linking
Theory and Practice

The recent advent of new communication and representation tools and
technologies has created a myriad of new potentialities and new realities
in the creation and dissemination of science visuals, both within and
outside of the scientific disciplines. This trend has also raised
questions about the use and impact of these visuals. Science visuals have
progressed beyond simple tables and graphs to include digitized
schematics and simulations, interactive computer graphics, and even video
games, in addition to film, video, and photographic treatments.
Computerization gives the creator new power to shape representations and
thus invite new interpretations of information. In this call we intend
the term visualization to include any kind of representation that relies
on “pictures” (broadly defined) rather than solely on language, text, or
numbers.

Visuals can both provide an entry point to science for people without
scientific training but also trivialize or confuse people about science
through the range of possible interpretations of imagery. They may also
encourage creative thinking within science. This special issue will bring
together research that considers the changes in science visualization
considered across a variety of disciplines to encourage synergy among
divergent approaches and provide a resource for communication, teaching,
and future research.

This special issue will focus on whether and how visuals and
visualization technologies (old and new) and the broader access that they
may provide are affecting science communication. Questions to be
addressed include how science is represented visually, how visuals
influence public perceptions and understandings of science, and what is
ultimately the impact of new science visualization technologies both
within the disciplines and in the public sphere. Papers can address such
topics as:
• the impact of visualization techniques and technologies on public
understanding/perceptions
• the ethics of visual science communication
• how scientific results are represented using new visualization
technologies, along with the implications of these representations
• visual metaphors, rhetoric, and framing in science visualization
• the changing use of visuals within science disciplines and what this means
• the use of iconic science imagery and its effects on emotion and public
perception
• power issues related to the use of visuals and the public accessibility
of science
• visuals and their reception in the science museum/center and/or other
particular contexts

This is not intended to be an exhaustive list but only a starting point.
Theory-based papers with an empirical or analytical focus and using any
quantitative or qualitative methodology will be considered. All papers
submitted will be subject to a rigorous and competitive peer review
process.

Papers are due April 1, 2014 for publication likely in late 2014 or early
2015. Earlier submissions are very strongly encouraged. Mention the
special issue in your cover letter. Papers should follow the Science
Communication guidelines for length and format; submit at
mc.manuscriptcentral.com/sc. Our ideal manuscript is between 7000 and
9000 words, inclusive of notes, references, and other material.
Additional guidelines can be found at scx.sagepub.com. Queries regarding
the special issue can be addressed to guest editor Mary Nucci at
mnucci@rutgers.edu or to the journal’s editor, Susanna Priest, at
editorscicom@gmail.com.

The Door With My Real Name On It

by David Hoffman

It was one of those rare moments when the past, present and future converge in a burst of energy and meaning. I stood at the rail above the Retriever Activities Center floor two weeks ago, looking down at the hopeful/confused/bored/excited faces of the assembled members of UMBC's entering class, and the university leaders on the platform in front of them. Diane Lee, UMBC's Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education, stepped to the podium and began to speak about a poem called "The Banjo."

I knew the poem well. Twenty years earlier, I had been working, very unhappily, at a big Los Angeles law firm, spending endless days litigating over the balance sheets of companies so big that the millions of dollars at stake were drops in an ocean. I had felt completely stifled and totally insignificant. Then I had quit the firm and started searching for another path. Months later, when I walked into my law school to browse the listings in its career services center, I felt totally adrift. I wanted so badly to make a meaningful contribution with my life, and to do work through which I could enact the real me. I ran into a staff member who remembered me and listened to my story, then flashed a sympathetic smile and handed me a piece of paper, with a poem. "The Banjo," by Robert Winner. I wasn't much of a poetry reader, but of course I gave it a look.

The narrator works at a job among rigid people camouflaged in their business suits,

while somewhere in the life I forgot to live,
an old rapscallion banjo sleeps with dust.

Feeling trapped in his own life, he imagines bringing the banjo to work and strumming, strumming to disrupt that world and wake the people in it to dancing. But it is a vision he does not know how to fulfill. The poem's last two, haunting lines captured my own dilemma perfectly:

It’s hard to know which life is sleep
Or where the door is with my real name on it.

That poem became a way of accessing and staying true to myself. The image of the door with my real name on it came to define my hopes for my professional life. When Diane Lee offered up "The Banjo" as a source of inspiration to the newest members of the UMBC community, it was as if she was sending a message back in time to my younger self: Have no fear, for one day you will work with others to build your doors together, at a university where people are eager to embrace and develop their best selves, and to enact their identities and purposes through meaningful contributions to the common good.

I'd love to hear about the poems, songs and books that have made a difference for you. What words and tunes have helped to define and transform you? What are the stories that connect you to them?
