A: The most memorable thing I've come to learn about UMBC is how much I enjoy the "small town" feel of the place when I walk through campus. It started when I was in the search process for my own job, and after one of the full day interviews with members of the community, I related to my wife that the whole time I was here walking around campus, people said hello to me, everywhere I went. I was not used to that coming from another institution, but the experience stuck with me and reinforced how much I wanted to be a part of a place that found importance in relationships and civility, as well as enviable academics.

That feeling was reinforced once I had been hired, and attended my first summer retreat after being here for about a week. Dr. Hrabowski saw me sitting at a table in a room full of about 500 people, and pointed the new Chief of Police out to everyone at the campus retreat, and asked me for a few words. Well, I've never been shy about talking to people, especially about myself, so I gave a thumbnail sketch of who I was, got them all laughing, and as Jerry Seinfeld would say, "left on a high note." For weeks after Dr. Hrabowski pointed me out, I walked around campus with people coming up to me, shaking my hand, and welcoming me to campus. When my wife asked me how the new job was going, I had to say that I felt like a rock star every time I walked around the campus, and it reminded me of the fact that the PEOPLE here are what makes UMBC such a great place.

Information about the Goucher Prison Education Partnership

The Goucher Prison Education Partnership (GPEP), a division of Goucher College, gives men and women incarcerated in Maryland the opportunity to pursue an excellent college education. We offer Goucher College courses to students at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women (MCIW) and the Maryland Correctional Institution – Jessup (MCIJ). We also provide college preparatory courses for students needing additional skill development to be ready for rigorous college work.

The entire Goucher academic community is enhanced and strengthened by the inclusion of these talented, dedicated students at the two prisons. Our work together stimulates awareness and meaningful dialogue in and beyond the Goucher community about justice, incarceration, and educational access.

    Teaching With GPEP

College courses are taught by Goucher College faculty and occasionally by faculty from other local institutions. The same outstanding courses offered on Goucher’s main campus are offered at MCIW and MCIJ. We also hire skilled instructors to lead college preparatory English and math courses.

Individuals interested in learning more about opportunities to teach with GPEP should visit our website www.goucher.edu/GPEP<http://www.goucher.edu/GPEP>.

Other ways to become involved

A cohort of skilled community members volunteer with the Goucher Prison Education Partnership. We have a particular need for math tutors and for individuals who can commit to offer 5 or more hours per week of office help.
CFP: The 1st Annual LLC Graduate Student Conference at UMBC

<Tagline>“Rethinking Intellectual Activism”</Tagline>

“Rethinking Intellectual Activism”
The 1st Annual LLC Graduate Student Conference at UMBC
Saturday, April 12, 2014
University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC)

Deadline for Proposals: November 30, 2013

Chicana feminist writer Gloria Anzaldúa once said, “To be part of an alliance or coalition is to be active, activist. Why do we make alliances and participate in them? We are searching for powerful, meaning-making experiences. To make our lives relevant, to gain political knowledge, to give our lives as a sense of involvement, to respond to social oppression and its debilitating effects. Activists are engaged in a political quest. Activists are alienated from the dominant culture but instead of withdrawing we confront, challenge.” Where do scholars stand with regard to activism and transformative politics? Do they confront and challenge the dominant culture or serve to safeguard the status quo in the privileged comfort of the “ivory tower” of academia? Can we envision the university as a place of intellectual activism? Or should we reinvent the institution and scholars’ roles in it to make it a space of “political quest?”

We invite you to join us as we explore the potential meanings and practical implications of “intellectual activism,” which, as a political praxis of knowledge production, validation, and distribution, can take many different forms. By focusing on the notion of “intellectual activism,” the conference aims to open a critical discursive space to question and reimagine the role of the university in maintaining and/or disrupting the systems and operations of power within and through which the institution functions. In order to rethink the (actual and/or imagined) boundaries of the university and activism in a relational framework, the conference intends to bring together scholars, activists, and artists and let them engage in stimulating dialogues about the future of the university as a political place of knowledge production and social justice promotion.

We look forward to a day of inspiring dialogues that engage graduate students from all social sciences and humanities inter/disciplines and activists working to bring social justice on various political fronts. We encourage proposals that investigate “intellectual activism” from political, historical, sociological, philosophical, pedagogical, economic, feminist, postcolonial, literary, queer, etc. perspectives.

Potential themes may include but are not limited to:
● Historical or theoretical analyses of activist movements and strategies both within and outside the institutionalized context of the university
● Coalition building between scholars and activists
● An examination of what is or should be the relationship between the community and the university
● Theorizing and practicing action-research methodologies
● Policing of radical ideologies in institutionalized educational settings
● Critical pedagogies and their discontents
● Institutionalization of feminist politics in the university
● Queer theory as intellectual activism
● Academic publications as oppositional discursive spaces
● Conservative policies/activisms and the academy
● The relationship between social media and social justice
● Prison-Industrial Complex and/or criminal justice
● Building and preserving public history and cultural heritage
● Immigration policies and reforms
● Urban renewal projects and “community development”
● Sexual violence against women and/or the LGBT community
● Gender inequality, particularly in light of recent attempts to legislate women’s bodies and healthcare in the United States or abroad
● Marriage equality, LGBT rights, and other normative forms of inclusion
● The relationship between the text and the critic
● Protest as performance and performance as protest

We welcome proposal submissions of full panel discussions (3 or 4 panelists), roundtable discussions (4-5 participants), or individual papers. If you submit an individual proposal, we may place you in a panel with 2 or 3 other presenters working on similar topics. You will have 15 minutes to present your paper. Each panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A session. We also welcome proposals of performative works and art installations. This is an all-day event; breakfast and lunch will be provided on conference site. Proposals of 200-400 words should be submitted at http://bit.ly/15Ch9jT no later than 12:00 midnight on November 30, 2013.

For questions about the conference, you can contact us at llcgradconference@gmail.com. For more information about the Language, Literacy and Culture PhD program, visit http://llc.umbc.edu. A: I really love being a desk staffer and seeing the residents in my building outside of the Patapsco lobby; its really nice to see people in the dining hall and have them say hi because "you're that girl that works at my front desk!". Not only that, but being a desk staffer really lets you connect with residents and sometimes make a noticeable difference in people. I enjoy being the first person people see when they walk into the building, giving them someone to talk to when they've had a rough day, and just getting to know them better as they get acquainted with UMBC and being a college student.

I also like walking through The Commons during free hour on Wednesdays and seeing Greek Life taking over the tables under the flags. Its such an incredible feeling to know that you're apart of a great organization that is part of an even better community. Being in a sorority has shaped my entire college experience into what I believe, is the best it could be thus far.

A: The most important thing I have learned in college is not to let your four years here at UMBC go by wasted. My freshman year, I joined three organizations my first semester, and a fourth second semester. I made lifelong friends (through FYC & Phi Sigma Sigma), learned some really amazing things about UMBC (through (seb), SGA, & FYC), and learned that I could really make a difference on this campus. By getting myself involved on campus, I believed I was really making the most of my freshman year- and I was. Two years later, I am still joining more organizations, encouraging other people to join the wonderful orgs I am a part of, and loving every minute of it. I have four semesters left here and I'm already dreading the day I have to leave this university for the real world. Everyone says it flies by so quickly, and each semester I am learning more and more how right they are.

Ambiguity Road

by Craig Berger

"Alright, thank you for your time," I said. I quickly hung up, wanting the call to end as soon as possible. After yet another university's dismissal from a search process, I had no options left. At that point my job search had no forward momentum whatsoever.

As I sat in my parents' living room that summer evening two years ago, I was completely perplexed. Was I doing something wrong? If so, what? I had no idea what my future looked like.
And more troubling to me was the public nature of it all--the struggle was not only "real," but visible. I was a grown man, living with my parents, staying in touch with newly-employed friends, and constantly scouring the job market for new opportunities. Thinking about how others--including my family, friends, and mentors--perceived my joblessness was, at times, paralyzing. Were they secretly attributing my lack of success to not working hard enough? Did they think I was being too picky? If I did stumble upon a search process I could successfully navigate, did I accept the offer--even if the job was mediocre at best? And if I didn't, would my support system disapprove of my decision-making? I marinated in my self-doubt for several weeks, watching "Golden Girls" and "The Price is Right," and reading.

It took a while (several months, in fact), but I eventually recognized that while it was a mess, it was my mess. While I could have tried to hide from it, pretended it wasn't happening, or saved face and not discuss my struggle with others, the stress wasn't going to disappear. I swallowed the shame I was feeling and started to reach out to my professional contacts, requesting that any opportunities they encounter be passed along to me. I started a blog, knowing that as an introvert who best communicates via writing, I could embrace the struggle publicly and hopefully better understand the situation in which I found myself and how I was handling it. I even embraced being in the very place in which I grew up, sorting through personal artifacts and thinking about who I was, the experiences unique to my life, and what I offered an institution.

And based on this knowledge, I also thought about what I might want in a new professional setting. The most important criterion I established was that I wanted to work in an office and at an institution that expected me to "be real" each day, both with colleagues and students. I wanted to be able to learn from my and others' actual lived experiences as opposed to compartmentalizing my time spent working with students from who I "really" am away from campus. After all, the key realization I discovered in navigating this ambiguous process was that this messy job search was the real world for me. I recognized that life isn't about moving from accomplishment to accomplishment, trumpeting only those moments of joy and excitement and hiding that which challenges us or makes us vulnerable.

When I ended my job search at UMBC two years ago this month, I was reminded that accomplishments are made that much more joyful and meaningful when they're built on ground fertilized by our mistakes and challenges. I come to work each day thankful that I get to be me, and that the standard for success by which I am measured is 1.) how effectively I am able to draw upon my experiences and passions in my work with colleagues and students, and 2.) how well I can learn from others'.

Based on what you know about yourself now, what do you want to find in a job? Feel free to share in the comments below.
