This year’s Winter Dissertation House start has truly been challenging but we have stepped up to meet the challenge.  The temperature outside today is in the single digits. The winter weather closed the UMBC campus on day 1.  Nonetheless, students stepped up and participated on line with many posts and updates of goals throughout the day. We are determined. Join us.

Facing Race: A National Conference is presented by Race Forward: The Center for Racial Justice Innovation. A unique collaborative space for racial justice movement making, Facing Race is the largest multiracial, inter-generational gathering for organizers, educators, creatives and other leaders.

Facing Race 2014 will be held in Dallas, Texas on November 13-15, 2014. In addition to highlighting a Southern perspective for Facing Race attendees, the 2014 conference will offer the local community unprecedented access to information and resources on racial equity. Previous Facing Race National Conferences have been held in Baltimore, Berkeley, Chicago, Oakland and New York.

Submit a proposal to be featured in one of our three conference tracks: 1) organizing and advocacy, 2) research and policy, and 3) arts, media and culture. Breakout Session proposals must be submitted by Friday January 24.

Produced by the Georgetown University English Graduate Student Association, Predicate aims to establish a forum for graduate students to share their research and writing: a place to work with other developing scholars.  

For this year’s issue, we invite submissions that investigate the act of reacting. What forms can a reaction take? How do time or historical context shape reactions to literature or events? How can a reaction impact the issue or event to which it responds? What motivates a reaction? Is reacting always a political act?

We encourage papers from all humanities disciplines including, but not limited to, philosophy, history, art history, theology, literature, women’s and gender studies, ethnic studies, and LGBTQ studies.

Submissions should be sent as Word document email attachments to Maria Vrcek (mev37@georgetown.edu) no later than 11:59 p.m. on February 14, 2014. All submissions should utilize Chicago style citation. Please do not include your name in the text of the paper. In the body of your email, include your name, your program affiliation, the title of your paper, and the subject of your paper. Papers should not exceed 6,000 words. Authors will be notified of acceptance and, if appropriate, suggestions for revision by the middle of March.

We invite paper or panel submissions on any aspect of female representation in science fiction and fantasy books, television shows, films, and comics. The conference is open to faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students, although we ask that undergraduate students submit the name of a faculty mentor who will assist them in developing their presentation.
