True Story

by David Hoffman

There was a time years ago, in high school and college, when I felt awkward, repulsive and worthless. I had a hard time talking to strangers because I imagined that they must resent me for taking up their time and space, and for the shame of being seen with me. The harshness with which I judged myself was not particularly rational, but so what? It was how I felt, and felt, and felt.

I did well in my classes and got elected to a couple of leadership positions, and those achievements became the basis for the story I started to tell myself to make myself less miserable. The achievements were just performances, but I began to imagine that they embodied my hidden worth. I maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout high school, and each exam became a test of the new story I was telling myself, on which everything now hinged.

I think a lot of us experience some version of what I did back then, albeit unconsciously. We tell ourselves stories that tie our worth to our performances, and then feel like imposters, vulnerable to being exposed if a performance slips. I think a lot of self-destructive or otherwise inexplicable behavior comes from that kind of thinking: Sticking with a major we don’t like in order to hold on to an image of ourselves as an achiever or a dutiful son or daughter; bullying others in order to cling to a sense of ourselves as strong and respected. When I was working in nonprofit organizations before coming to UMBC, I met some people who clung so hard to visions of themselves as altruistic heroes that they were not open to questioning the effectiveness or impact of their efforts. In state and national elections, many people seem to cast their votes for the candidates who affirm the stories they are already telling themselves about their own identities and worth, and feel unreasoning hatred toward the candidates who call those stories into question.

There is another way to live: With authenticity, humility and openness, and a bedrock understanding that our intrinsic worth does not depend on meeting our marks in some grandiose performance. But how can one achieve that kind of perspective? I can’t say I know for certain or for everyone, but what made all the difference for me, as I became more whole and real over the years, and grew to be less afraid, were environments in which I could lower my guard and be myself: vulnerable and incomplete, and yet powerful and valuable, all at the same time. It happened in the context of close friendships; during vacations and other timeouts from my everyday circumstances; and in the context of collaborative projects in which my contributions blended with others, each input necessary but insufficient on its own, in which the whole exceeded the sum of the parts.

A part of what I find so wonderful and compelling about UMBC is that we seem to do well at creating environments in which it’s possible to be real: to write a new story of self that isn’t just about performances. One of the many places that happens is at STRiVE, the week-long student leadership retreat hosted by Student Life and SGA. At the latest STRiVE, over the winter break, 61 people who had mostly been strangers to each other rapidly created a community in which the participants and coaches alike could explore their talents, discover shared passions, and give and receive honest feedback. I love that at UMBC we define leadership partly as the skill and commitment to co-create just that kind of community.

Where are you finding the thread of your own real story at UMBC? Let’s keep helping each other discover and experience our value beyond performances, by sharing and co-creating spaces that set us free.

Co-Create UMBC is a blog for and about UMBC, written by David Hoffman and Craig Berger from Student Life. UMBC has allowed me opportunities to get jobs, meet people from all over the world, go to the white house, meet Michael Oher. Things, I never even dreamed of were able to happen through the opportunities given by UMBC. If I can do all those things, I know I can achieve my dreams with the resources provided by UMBC. It is amazing to see those dreams begin to come true.

Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"

A: Chocolate and a band called McFly.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: One of my favorite memories at UMBC is when Ira Glass came to give a talk during one of homecomings. I have always been a fan of the journalist and his radio show, This American Life, so being able to put a face to the voice I had heard for so long was really exciting. My dad and sister, also fans of the show, came to UMBC to hear him speak too. His speech was very moving and inspiring. He said to never doubt our dreams, to keep our confidence, because we would be able to make our dreams a reality one day so continue striving towards our goals.

Co-Create UMBC is a blog for and about UMBC, written by David Hoffman and Craig Berger from the Office of Student Life.
CFP: Diversity Challenge at Boston College 2014

<Tagline>Racial or Ethnic Discrimination Across the Lifespan</Tagline>

October 24-25, 2014
Submission deadline: April 19, 2014

The Institute for the Study and Promotion of Race and Culture (ISPRC) is pleased to present the 14th annual Diversity Challenge: Racial or Ethnic Discrimination across the Lifespan. We seek proposals that focus on research, assessment, interventions, and health policies that move beyond merely comparing racial/ethnic groups to more fully considering the complexity of race and culture as effects on mental and physical health. We welcome proposals that address such issues across the lifespan and focus on specific age groups, such as children and adolescents and adults of all ages. Also, we encourage proposals outlining systemic approaches to these concerns, which may include preventive strategies, school interventions, and agency collaborations that focus on racial life experiences, such as racism and discrimination, and/or cultural attributes, such as resilience and health beliefs.

We envision an interdisciplinary forum in which a variety of perspectives are explored and scientists, practitioners, educators, and social activists can interact with each other in order to address mutual concerns related to this important theme. Proposals are welcome from researchers, practitioners, educators, community organizations, advocacy and activist groups, medical service providers, employee assistance personnel, government agencies, spiritual healers, and providers of community services. Work groups focused on health disparities are also encouraged to submit. Finally, we welcome critical perspectives and creative ideas concerning the role of race and culture in fostering health and mental health in the lives of individuals regardless of their race or cultural origins.

Easy Proposal Submission: Online

January 23, 2014

Buenos tardes a todos!!/Good afternoon to everyone!!

Estoy en Ecuador y estoy muy feliz porque hay 112 mesajes aqui!/I am in Ecuador and am very happy because there are 112 messages here!

Congratulations to all of you on your persistence! What does your persistence mean? If you blogged in during the snow storm, you have already proven that you have what it takes. You have drive and determination. That is a large part of the battle. The Dissertation House exists to assist you with navigating the process and adding “knowledge of the process” to your enthusiasm.

My message for you today is simple:

1) Don’t stop until you’re done!
Dr. Carter-Veale, Dr. Cortes, and some of you have seen people in the DH who felt frustrated, tired, and upset, BUT … they finished. They defended, handed in their dissertations, and walked across the stage with the big robe and the thick bars on their arms. That will be you … soon.

2) Pay close attention to the tips that you will receive in the DH.
These are tried and tested methods. With a pure heart, I ask you to “just do it.”

3) As much as possible, stay in close contact with your advisor.
Your advisor needs to know that you are working. You also want to be sure that you are on the right page and that the expectations are in sync.

4) Utilize the community that is being established in the DH. It helps!
Working on the dissertation does not have to be a lonely, isolated process. You are now surrounded by a community of scholars with like minds and goals. There’s energy there. Feed on it. Use it. Bask in it!

5) Embrace the process.
This is the hard one. The process is difficult, but there are parts of the process that are worth the frustration. The dissertation process teaches you how to deal with long-term projects, how to deal with contrasting personalities (e.g., your committee), how to deal with rejection, and how to handle your own emotions. This is a maturation process. You may not know all of the answers, but you learn how to investigate solutions, and you learn to think through options. You may not like all of the people with whom you’re working, but you learn how to negotiate for what you need, and you learn to appreciate the strengths that people bring to the table, regardless of whether or not you care for them personally. You can still learn from “Painful People.” You can still learn from people, even when they aren’t providing information or assistance in a way that is amiable or projecting a feeling of giving. Take what they provide and find its worth. Above all, learn to appreciate the process of becoming more adept in your field.

Overall, I’m sorry that I’m not there in person for this session, but feel free to make an appointment with me to talk when I return to UMBC in February. Good luck to all of you! Congratulations on your hard work and keep it up. Those letters … “P,” “h,” and “D,” are dangling, hanging around, waiting for you to finish so that they can accompany your name!

Best regards,
